I would imagine there's a lot of engineering and development work at Google - are they going to be able to do what they do via Chromebooks? Does that mean there's development full-fledged tools, IDEs, VMs (maybe?) currently working within the Chrome OS framework? If so, that would be incredible.

Sort of a tangent, but how do you know if you're getting an HD stream from Netflix? Or is there any sort of comparison chart of different Netflix devices? I've got some cheapo Insignia Bluray player I picked up partially because it came bundled with Netflix playback. That works fine and all and streams seem fine to me but I've wondered how my experience compares to other devices. I saw the Netflix menu on a friend's PS3 and it blew the BR players' interface away. What's going to give me the best Netflix streaming experience? A Roku box? A tivo? A DIY Boxee box? I like having it bundled with a disc player or DVR or something just so I don't have to have yet another device but how do I know?

And I'm pretty sure it's not even updated or being worked on any more. Then you've got the plethora of games that would (could? should?) have online multiplayer or downloadable updates available, but don't. I really like multiplayer trivia games, especially with people over. Trivial Pursuit even looks like it has support to add new questions, but that was never available on the Wii. I just found out You Don't Know Jack is available on the Wii now. But the Wii version doesn't support online multiplayer or additional content - even though the XBOX version does! Why?!?

I have a Thinkpad with switchable graphics - integrated Intel for low power stuff and an ATI discrete chip for real graphics. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on it. The way it works is basically Ubuntu doesn't support on the fly switching so you select in the BIOS which setting you want "on" and it uses that. Every Ubuntu seems to detect there's proprietary drivers for the ATI stuff just fine - but every time I've tried using those and using the discrete graphics, it reboots and just comes to a blank screen. I always end up having to either reinstall the whole OS, or boot with a disc and delete xorg or somethingorother, then switching back to the integrated graphics for it to Just Work. On top of that, I'll search forums and blogs and get thousands of different answers, from having to compile my own whatnot to it shouldn't be using this setting in the first place. I dunno, it's a complete hassle. All in all I love running the linux desktop but I think the audio and video have been the biggest PITAs the whole time. Enough that every so often I consider switching back to Windows 7. I did do that probably a year ago and it lasted about two weeks before I wanted to go back. I missed my wobbly windows!

Maybe I need to wipe everything clean and start from scratch on the next Ubuntu release and try it again...of course I still don't think there's an answer to the true on the fly switchable graphics, so who knows.

  15. Re:DVR on Boxee Box Matures; Another Look At the Platform · · Score: 1

Cool, I'll check out MediaPortal. I get what Boxee is - but I include DVR'd content in my "media content". I want a single box to aggregate content from Internet media, local media, and cable. I was hoping GoogleTV might have done that - say I have "The Office" on my mind. I search for that on a device and it shows me locally saved recordings, downloaded videos, that it's available streaming on any number of sites, and that there are episodes currently playing on my cable channel X. It seems like Boxee and GoogleTV, etc. have most of that - the aggregating local and Internet content. But there's a completely separate paradigm for the rest. Why can't everything be covered in a single box?

Out of curiosity, how is the ATV Netflix different from the Roku version? I've often wondered about the different Netflixes on different devices. I mean, I know Netflix on my Wii isn't going to display the same as on other devices that might support HD. And I've seen the difference in the movie browsing interface on a friend's PS3 vs my cheap-o BluRay player that has Netflix on it. But is actual playback of Netflix videos different from device to device? Is there anywhere that runs down the differences between Netflix implementations on different devices?

  17. DVR on Boxee Box Matures; Another Look At the Platform · · Score: 1

The one thing I would like to see in any of these boxes (Boxee, XBMC, etc.) is a clean integrated DVR. With CableCard support. Why do I have to use the cableco's box, or pay for a Tivo, or build my own separate media center (myth or Win7 or whatever) to get a DVR? I don't want to have to manage some sort of convoluted ecosystem of boxes or extenders either. Boxee/XBC obviously has the media management, playback, and streaming down pat. Why isn't there a DVR option that I can plug into networked storage and do all of that natively, too?
