Yes, I think Linux should be allowed to use proprietary drivers. We are seeing such in WiFi now such as ndiswrapper.

If the poor and 3rd world die first, then the world wouldn't need $100 laptops from MIT and Bill Gates would be happy about the lack of need of $100 laptops. Then an avenue for world-wide usage of Linux would go away and he would certainly be happy about that.

How funny. This is one product, when resold, you would think Microsoft would benefit from it. They would if they could get people to upgrade soon after they purchase these licenses from the reseller. However, there is one feature about old Microsoft software that would be a hinderance to Microsoft. And that would be updates, especially security updates. And the fact that Microsoft EXPECTS a certain cycle of upgrade revenue, which negated the need for this older software in the first place. Another thing that comes to mind is support of these legacy programs. I think Microsoft is trying to get out of that business, no? Should be interesting to see how this pans out.

This kind of freedom produces better software and makes Linux the right choice for schools and agencies concerned with the ethical use of public funds.

Most people who use Windows don't see past their nose when it comes to their computing needs. Look at the long term and where do you want your school in 5 years. Linux and Open Source IS keeping up and the software is readily available and with a little digging, your systems can be VERY compatible in a Microsoft world.

Me: When I am forced to use MS-Windows, I run it in VMplayer http://www.vmware.com/vmplayer. It is free. It is the best at running Microsoft software, especially ActiveX and DirectSound and a number of other gotches that cause other emulators to hiccup. You can even run it full screen and think you are on a Windows box. But having Linux run on your hardware will make it easier for anyone to manage. Go buy a copy of Mandriva 2006 at http://www.linuxcentral.com.

Also, I am running virus free with Linux for the past 8 years without the use of anti-virus software. To me, Linux IS the anti-virus software. But if you really think you need it, Linux has an external package available to do that for you. And if you get a virus on Windows running in VMplayer, simply reload the virtual drive image. No hassle!

The licensing structure is based on the old setup of excluding other OSes back in early 90's (like Novell DOS 7, OS/2 Warp, or IBM DOS) and is carried into the present (can't preload Linux or Microsoft will revoke your OEM license discount and send your business into the craphole.)
