The levy, $0.21 per blank CD (about $0.17 in US dollars), is designed to partially compensate for lost income by artists due to piracy, but it doesn't come close to the actual amount lost by composers, songwriters, performers and record companies when one chooses to P2P a CD to avoid purchasing it at the store
I know this has been said before, but I find it hard to understand how the record companies claim millions or billions lost due to piracy. There's no real way to even come close to an actual dollar amount. I'm sure there's some effect, but I have a hard time believing it's as great as the record companies claim.
Let's not forget the huge percentage of each CD sale that the record companies take.
If the goal of this is to keep kids from being exposed to violence, then the next reasonable step is to ban anyone under the age of 18 from all professional sporting events.
I wonder if the violence would be reduced or eliminated if pro athletes stopped taking steroids?
Suppose 90% of all web users switch to Firefox. (very optimistic, I know) Would the hackers try to accomodate them by exploiting Firefox? Or is that the point of Firefox - it's built well so that it can't be exploited easily?
I've been using Firefox for several months now and I won't go back to IE. In fact, I configured my firewall to block IE's network access.
Before the widespread use of GPS, how was any navigation done?
There are several motorcycle races that I participate in and GPS is one of the options for navigation. It's extremely convenient, but I always use a scrollchart (turn by turn directions matched to your odometer) as a backup.
Always have a backup, no matter what activity you participate in.
If you're worried about getting a picture taken, simply pay some kid off the street a few bucks to complete the transaction for you. Better yet hire a ragged bum.
OR, how about not using the USPS to ship packages and stick to FedEx or UPS instead? All the shipping centers I've been to don't have cameras...
I always enjoy wearing a ski mask in public places.
I was visiting my family in Pennsylvania a few weeks ago and had to wear a facemask because I was riding a motorcycle. I stopped at a few stores one day and didn't bother to take my mask off, and noticed that most of the clerks I encountered were very nervous and uneasy.
Working in the defense industry, I have heard many good things about USAA. Too bad I'm not eligible.
I was going to point out that Geico has some of the highest rates that I've seen. Their commercials always say "Geico could save you 15% or more." I wonder how many people really can save that much? When I was insurance shopping, Geico's was the second-highest quote of all that I received (I tried Survival, Geico, Progressive, State Farm, 21st Century, and Mercury)
I had wanted the R-50 for a long time, but ended up getting a MZ-R37 for free (my uncle got it as a gift but didn't want it so he gave it to me).
The 37 is fairly solid. I've been using it since 1999 with no problems. My only real problem with this player is that it's HUGE and isn't very convenient when I'm at the gym.
"I'm a carpenter who works hard on the set..."
and I make $6.00 an hour busting my ass. Meanwhile the executives and bad actors/actresses make millions for doing half the work I do!
I saw Bourne Supremacy there, and the actual movie started exactly when it should have, with no ads or previews. What a great experience! The only downside is they don't have stadium seating, so it can be uncomfortable if you're close to the front.
Oh, it looks like they're showing Team America. I just might go see it tonight!
I don't own an iPod and I don't use any digital format other than MP3, but from what I understand you can remove the DRM from the Real file then play that on your iPod. Or is it only currently possible to remove the DRM from Apple's proprietary format?
Do yourself a favor and avoid all online music stores. Download whatever you can find for free from bittorrent or Ares then go buy the CDs of anything you can't find.
My 'portable' music collection fits in a few cases and weighs several hundred pounds. It's all on vinyl!
In my current job, I was given some code to review and implement the functions in a modern system using C++. It was in JOVIAL, which I have never even heard of.
Wow, based on all the slashdot articles I can concolude that Sony can't make any decent products anymore. First I learn that the new HDD walkman is junk, and now the PSP is junk.
Actually, the walkman review was just someone's opinion whereas this article points out the FACTS that the PSPs are breaking.
I have heard several 'experts' argue about whether it's nature or man causing the global warming. Doesn't anyone have a real answer yet?
For all we know, the warming trend might drastically end within a few years.
Or you could just use Cpunks. cpunks1 and cpunks2 didn't work, however cpunks3 worked just fine.
Oh, the fun you can have with a teleprompter.

It must be those French speaking Canadians disagreeing with American law.

No, only a date change to Y2K could possibly have an effect like that.
Then I'll just have to switch to Analog... which will work just fine until the analog cell system is shut down in the next few years as planned.
GPS is very nice and makes many things easier, but it's not a necessity.

How much extra time do you have? Opening every single spam and trying to 'unsubscribe' is a VERY tedious task.

Charging $12 for a movie is stealing.

I ended up spending some time reviewing it and figuring out how the functions worked, but it was frustrating.
I also concolude that I should check my spelling before I post to /.
Actually, the walkman review was just someone's opinion whereas this article points out the FACTS that the PSPs are breaking.
If you could care less about an updated roster, you can get the 2004 or 2005 version for $5.
