If an ice cube floating in a glass of water melts, the water will still be at the same level afterwards.
If a floating iceberg melts, it will add water to the oceans, causing the average water level to be the same.
However, there is still more water in motion, so the effect of the tide will probably be larger.
(Also, I was under the impression that the Antarctic ice wasn't floating? Or maybe this section was?)
I read recently (i think it was on the naked scientist) that these large masses of ice have a small gravitational field. They pull water close to them. When the ice bergs break up, they lose mass and gravity. The article was suggesting that water levels will rise because the water that was pulled by the icebergs will now be in the ocean.
One website decides to use silverlight. How about the other sites like cnn, msnbc etc that will use something else. Just go there.
FYI - silverlight runs on osX and moonlight (see mono) runs on linux.
On a different note, this is a sad day for those owning AAPL shares - expect them to plunge even further than they have over the past year.
Ohh and I don't know it might also be a sad day for his family. Let's get some perspective here. He has serious health issues and people seem to care more about the stock prices.
The author was just exaggerating. Maybe it wasn't as popular as XP but I consider it more popular that ME and 98. What's really funny is their least popular OS still has more consumer market share than linux and os x. (that last statement was a troll, I know, but lets get some perspective here.)
I'm tired of the "easy enough even old people/my parents can use it" statement -- in any context.
My dad's 66 now and he introduced me, a young person, to computers when I was growing up. He was the one that fixed the computers in my house. My grandfather, back in the early 80s, bought a computer and was very competent with it.
Neither my dad or grandfather were engineers or programmers - they were just smart and curious. Using a computer doesn't have anything to do with age -- its not the domain of the young.
"Funny, I switched to Mac to get away from Vista."
Good for you. I am glad you paid more for a machine with the same parts found in a windows pc. Oh yeah, and windows can run more programs too. So you paid more for something less usable.
"Most of your Linux info is fud and spin"
It is not spin or fud. It is the truth. It is hard to setup word and itunes in linux -- programs I need as well as many others. Maybe you're really smart and its easy for you.
"'Forcing customers to go someplace they don't want to go by raising prices is a Christmas present for Apple and those that are positioning Linux on the desktop.'""
I've heard this argument before but it just doesn't make sense. Here's why:
I am a computer user that uses windows. I can buy a machine with windows, a good one, for $500 or less. But its got, vista, I don't like vista. So what do most slashdotters think will happen next?
1) abandon windows and buy a mac that costs twice as much as a windows pc 2) abandon windows and buy a cheaper pc running linux 3) user buys vista machine for $500
I would say a normal rational shopper would go with number 3.
Here's why 1 wouldn't be an option. It is irrational to pay twice as much for a computer that does basically the same thing and has a much different interface.
Here's why 2 wouldn't be an option. The shopper is less likely to find a computer running linux for sale in a store or online, if they weren't specifically shopping for a linux pc. In addition, if they knew anything about linux they would realize it can't run word, internet explorer, itunes or most of the other programs they want without a high level of expertise.
Here's why 3 would be the choice: Its available. Vista is easier to transition to if you are already familiar with windows xp. The price is cheaper than mac. You can run most of your programs you want on it.
"confiscating the student's property for no valid reason"
Didn't your teacher ever take up your toys? In my school district, kids are not suppose to bring toys (or linux/windows/software cds) to school. She didn't have to take it up but she's with in her rights. Remember kids are not adults. They do NOT have the same rights as Adults.
Not all teachers are members of NEA. My wife is a teacher in Georgia, and she is not a member. Considering that Karent is a teacher in Texas, I would bet she's not in a union. Unions have never been strong in southern states.
IE6 has a quirks/standard mode and it automatically changes depending on the page content. I suspect IE8 will be the same way. (Firefox also has a quirks mode) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quirks_mode
"Code will get even more inefficient / bloated and require faster hardware to do the same thing you are doing now. "
All that "inefficient" code must be doing something better. I for one, can do more on my computer now than 10 years ago: Video, music, web, voip, desktop search, 3d desktop effects, 3d games.
"Exactly what areas of "personal computing" are requiring this horsepower?"
It will speed up multitasking. If your using windows, pull up the task manager. Take a look at all those processes running in the background. Having multiple cores will speed them up. I regularly have lotus notes, firefox, IE and visual studio open at the same time.
Working within the confines of PLINQ, you can get benefits of parallel programming without the pain. There are exceptions of course; it's no free lunch.
(PLINQ is the parallel extensions to LINQ. )
"You see, Microsoft is known for its absolute stranglehold over the OEMs. There were quite a few OSs that they wanted to ship. For example, BeOS. But MS had or has predatory licensing agreements, such as having to pay a Windows Tax for every PC even if it shipped with no OS at all."
Don't get angry if Im wrong but...
I believe Microsoft was ordered to stop locking in vendors in this manor as part of an anti-trust agreement.
As an aside, Asking, "Why is this news?," is just retarted. Stop asking it.
the way to determine if a machine is a Mac is a little screwy...
I have a windows machine running XP. I haven't had a virus in over 3 years... and I know plenty of people that fall into this same category. So did they count my machine?
"But once we get to photorealism, what is going to sustain growth?"
Did Art die when artists started creating photorealistic paintings? No, they just moved into other mediums. Computer Graphics, mixed media... It encouraged new forms of creative thinking.
I think the game industry will also go the same way. We already see this. Games are starting to have 3d cartoon graphics. Photo realism is not the objective, They are trying new ways to immerse the player.

"By 2050 nearly 80% of the worldâ(TM)s population will reside in urban centers, and 109 hectares of arable land will be needed to feed them."
Assuming this quote is accurate, then that means we'll have plenty of land to grow crops on (because not as many people live in rural areas).

Microsoft never said it would be. Even if you could run windows 7 on a netbook, its not like you could run crysis on your netbook.

I've noticed a general slow down and unresponsiveness in facebook. It started when they rolled out the new fully ajaxified UI a few months back.
I figured the slow down was caused by the ajax but maybe it was the 600,000 new users getting added per day.
I hope facebook speeds up.
Bush is a normal person. He's corrupt, selfish and only helps out his friends -- just like most people.

I for one would rather not program multi-threaded programs. It is harder to debug for one.

Thats a firefox extension worth developing
