As long as IE remains bundled with the windows OS, Firefox will *never* take off and reach a significant install base.

I work as a consultant for many IT firms, and even though they are perfectly aware of IE's limitations and security problems, they do not make the change to an alternate browser simply because it is far easier to stay with the one already installed on the system.

Inertia means that Firefox will always remain a fringe browser until some anti-monopoly law makes MS remove IE. And that will never happen. No matter how awful IE becomes now or in the future, sheer laziness means it will always be the predominant browser.

So Microsoft have released another bunch of statistics that show that their product is better than their competitors. Does anyone actually believe this crap?

Umm yes, they do. That's the whole point. The vast majority of people are not computer literate, and they need to be told what to think and what to buy. Therefore if you tell them the same thing often enough and loud enough and with enough pretty pictures, they will believe that message 'til their dying day.

Most people I know are aghast when they see yet another Microsoft sponsored "research" paper proclaim (yet again) Microsoft's superiority. But it works! If you keep feeding and feeding and feeding this to the public they will believe it!

And that is why it's working - they are believing it. The people that see through this and correctly label it as FUD are a tiny, voiceless minority.

Yes, but you and what you do on your computer is not representative of everyone.

A lot of other people have very good reasons for running MS software under linux. Take a web developer for example. It is possible to develop websites under linux, but because of the severly broken nature of IE, you have to test every page you write on it to make sure it renders. Hence installing IE under wine is necessary.

    This is but one example...

Just because you don't do something doesn't mean there aren't legitimate reasons why someone else would want to do the same thing.
