    I've been getting "SSL certificate couldn't be verified" messages when logging into Hotmail for the past few days. I'm in the US. The article says nothing about US sites, but it sure seems like a big coincidence that Hotmail has been acting up for me around the same time that this was going on.

    Have you ever seen NTFS ACLs? Standard Unix-style permissions are a joke compared NTFS ACLs, but fortunately Linux has some decent ACL capabilities nowadays.

    I do use Linux, but since Windows works for me, I don't really have a reason to switch over when most of the apps and games I use are Windows-specific.

    Great idea, except for the part where there isn't really a substitute for su. And no, "run as" doesn't count.

    In what way? It's functional from either an application/shortcut context menu, or from scripts or CLI.

    Also, most Windows apps expect the user to be Administrator, or they either won't run or will run half-assed.

    Most? Ehh, OK. I use Windows day to day, and the only thing I use so far that wants to be admin is the Punkbuster client. Generally, if some program chokes when being run as a limited user, it's because of filesystem permissions. Some poorly written applications don't know how to save data to a user's profile directory, and instead attempt to save it into their installation directory. Make their installation directory writable by the Users group, but remove write permissions for all program and data files.

    I guess that would just be too much work for some, and they'd rather have their systems destroyed by spyware and viruses than take 10 minutes to set up an application to properly run under a limited user account.

    Come on, Lucas.. 'Ya could have at least let someone who knows how to write love scenes write this stuff. It was seriously painful watching the "intimate moments" between Anakin and Padme.

What if we invent a time machine and bring Archimedes back, and he's all like "what the fuck? You idiots this time machine is the shit that resets everything!" and then the scientists all bust out laughing and shit, but then when they try to send him back in time the time machine all starts smoking and shit, really crazy you know, and civilisation gets set back to the time where Archimedes wrote that crazy ass formula down! Then he's all like, shaking his head, because he knows it will happen again in a few thousand years.

    However, from just trying to install software on a Solaris box I can tell you, I don't like it one bit. When I install software, I don't want to have to manually copy files and go in and edit config files myself. If this was 1980 I wouldn't mind.

    While that is correct if you want to get ACPI support, you don't NEED an ACPI-compliant BIOS to use Windows 2000. You just won't get ACPI functionality, and Windows will instead use a "Standard" HAL accordingly.

    The manufacturers DID fix it. What do you expect MS to do? They can't kick the manufacturers into replacing every affected drive on the planet, and they sure as hell can't get clueless/empathetic users to do anything about it either.

    So... Release a patch for it. The patch was not required either, and was quite clearly documented when displayed in Windows Update for users of Windows 9x.
