I'm not too sure about the "Real woman = less expensive" part:) They're like a wireless phone plan : "only $19.95 - fine print on page 32,676 of your contract:(monthly subscription of $10,00000000/month required)"
JVC (Japanese Victor Company) introduced a wireless infrared LAN a few years ago. It was 1mbps and used the ceiling (as long as it was white) to communicate with other nodes in peer-to-peer mode. It also had a "Hub" that was ceiling based.
Every time there is a gas crunch, people go looking to alternatives. While diesel is a "cheap" alternative, it is far from being clean.
You see, people claim diesel is clean, and they are in fact correct if you beleive the clinical analysis of diesel output in a labratory environemnt where conditions are perfect. Diesel exhaust in the real world is far from clean. Most people cannot afford the cost to fix their vehicles' emissions systems, and diesel emissions inspection testsing in most US states are very lenient, and practically non-existant in the EU.
Diesel is the cause of the blackening of our ancient cities in Europe, increases allergies in children exposed to diesel exhaust in their youth, unhealthy to breath for adults, and just plain unsightly, and disgusting, not to mention noisy and smelly.
Unless diesel engine tuneups are strictly enforced, and the frequency of checkups are increased with HEAVY fines for ignorance, I don't think this is the direction the world should be going for our energy solution.
With just a little more effort, we can move to a cleaner, and (in the long run) cheaper fuels. Are we going to throw away our health for a few bucks?!?

There is an alternative for the small color identifation challenged people- it's called the text install. I for one applaud Mandrake's choice to be non-conformist, I am sick of checkboxes. Ok, for a day-to-day use, standard mnemonics should be used to maintain consitancy(ie.: checkboxes), but I find it refereshing to see something different for an installer(something you hopefully DON'T use day to day)

This exact thing happened to me with 3Com's LANSentry RMON software. They build hardware probes that required proprietary software to access them,. The software required an ELM key to operate. When I needed a new ELM key, 3Com said that they sold the company that wrote the software , and the keygenerator along with it and I'd have to purchase new probes and software.
Needless to say, I was astonished! The probes were only a year old!!
My experience indicates that the answer is to the Slashdot question is "not much".
I have always wondered why hacking/cracking is considered a crime.
It seems to me that if I put a system on the "net" that is unprotected, I am liable if it gets hacked. BFD. If someone is smarter than me and figures out a way to crack my system, good for them, I am stupid, and I will die - end game. There is no crime that occurred other than me not providing the necessary safegaurds. To the victor goes the spoils. I am sure if there were no "cyber crime" lwas out there, there would be a heck of a lot more secure systems. Log evience is great for tracking down the offender, but should not be admissable in court. Yes the net is convenient, and it's a great place to do business etc, but people keep forgetting it can be dangerous too, and instead of accepting reality, they invent stupid laws. Stupid laws for stupid people.
Why are there laws in place to protect stupid people?
And another thing, It's a "CYBER" crime, why should that result in a real-world punishment? The only thing that was potentially hurt in the process were a few electrons.
Dude, like it's great that we can keep our guns and all. But WTF can we do with them? We can't USE them, except, maybe as a hammer to hang a paining or somehting. You're correct aobut our rights being eroded though.
And about guns, it's the right to bear arms - which is cool, the only problem with it is, there are plenty of laws obsufcating the intent of that right.
Sounds good up gront until YOU get sued for sexual harassment for drooling infront of her becasue she mistakenly assumed you were drooling about her, not the slick new PS/2 you just got.

I agree totally. I work with enough of these towlheaded vegitarians to make my stomach turn. Yes, they are talented people, but NO, they do not deserve a 6 digit salary, and yes, they SHOULD speak english because I can't understand a fucking word they say half the time. That makes MY productivity look pale becuase I spend all my time trying to translate that lovely code they wrote into something an American end user can use. Dialog boxes in Swahili are not useful to American end users:)
They knew the consequences - no lost tears here. You'd think the America government can come up with more nationalistic ways to reduce the "shortage" - like giveing tax breaks to tech workers, not the the companies that hire them...
As of 8:30 this morning, my VPN to my office is being blocked!! My dial up ISP works fine on the same machine, but my @home connection bonks. "CAnnot pass security packets - possible firewall configuration issue".
I was a bit suprised at the "myths" section. It was written with nothing but good things to say, and failed to indicate where/why the myths originiated. It also kept repeating "normal quantities" and "most people". It fails to define what normal is, and who "most people" are. I think many of the people responding on slashdot drink enough coffee/caffeine to not fit into that "most people" category, and for us, those myths COULD be true.
Also, it fails to mention any link between caffeine and depression - a trend that is common amongst hi-intake coffee drinkers. Myth? Fact? Hmmmm.....
Well, that's the beauty of this. If there were ONE battery casing style, then as battery technology advances, people could "Trade-up" simply by asking for the "super-unleaded" (no pun intended) battery that has the newer technology. Old-tech batteries can then be retired - SAFELY - by the gas stations.
I've thought of that charge/cycle time problem. Why not invent ONE battery standard for ALL cars. The battery would be removable(from below). The battery's would be "in the public domain" so to say:
Gas stations would stock freshly charged batteries. When your battery runs down, you' drive up to a gas station, and the attendand would(presumably using a forklift of some sort) wheel out your "dead" batter and roll in a fresh one. Your "dead" battery would go onto the chargin pile in the gas staitons' inventory, and you'd drive off.
There are a lot of issues that this brings up, but it's similar to the way propane for gas barbecues is distributed in the states - you always end up with someone elses tank.
Is it just me, or did that suck? Ok, the hardware is cool and unique - I give credit to the inventor, but the puffy noises it makes caused me to think there was something wrong with my MP3 software. In the extreme, I suppose it can qualify as music, but it should be called something other than an organ(inspires souds from a concert hall). Now if this thing actually SOUNDED something SIMILAR to an organ, and was capable of playing extablished music in new fantisuful ways, now, that would be WAY cool.

Hmm, That is interesting - considering that TRUE HDTV requires a BW of over 14MBps. Current Screens and DVD players only typically go up to about 5MBps. The storage capacity is also a problem at TRUE HDTV - more space is required for the same footage of a movie.
Everyone keeps saying how good MPEG is and Digital video. Is it just me or when I'm watching my direct TV, or my Matrix DVD, or other similar Digital inputs to my BSTV(Big Screen TV) do I see awful pixelation during high contrast scenes? Like explosions, they are the worst for pixelation - it's as if the decoder ain't fast enough to compute the diff between frames.
I think I'd rather have High quality Analog over choppy digital any day - if such a thing existed(BETA MAX?)
