on this particular box, root is logged in, as is a user account (called user) - both accounts are running various (tailing logs etc) things to keep an eye on progress of the hacks it seems.

Load average is a little steep, poor little box.
And enabling root is elementary for a user with sudo access
Theres a few bits over on my blog post about it
Reminds me of a FOIA-equivalent request I did a while back. Along with the 3 reams of paper I got, was a letter i'd been posted from the angency previously. The letter had contained contact information for the people involved in the case. What I got was a piece of paper, entirely covered with black censorship, with only my name un-blanked. Some protection of privacy I suppose, but the letter was addressed to ME!
When I made the request, I was trying to discover details of other correspondance, but the agency in question had know way of specifying exactly what you wanted, just "all" documents relating to X. By law they are required to fulfil the request within 28 days or request an extension. I got no less than six requests for extensions, and finally got the documents I was after about 7 months after the request.
I do recall speaking to one of the staff at the agency, and there was at least one, and sometimes 3 staff sorting thru the files for those 6 or so months, busy with black highlighters and photocopiers.
The agency's problem was that less than 3 months before, four other people had made a similar request. I think the words I heard were "Oh, shit, not another request from that case".
I have no sympathy really. Without the agency's interferance, they wouldn't have this problem.. which to date has comtinued for over 12 years, and still continues to cost them a fair chunk of my taxes each year.
Yeah.. the netcraft article could be a bit more insightful/informative by including stats from a few of those fan sites. Sadly the moment is gone..
As you mention, there was a huge cascade effect (slashdot effect?) - usually triggered in a variety of IRC rooms - due to people posting a link "This site has this update already" or "See the picture here".
In general MacWorld IRC and web-based realtime coverage was lacking compared to a number of quality mac fan sites. Even the dedication of people posting updates and pictures from a cellphone link...
If Apple continues to delay their webcasts, i'm sure these sites providing "to the second" news and updates will develop better systems. Already, as you mention, a number of these sites switch to low-bandwidth pages for the keynote.
16 different fan sites on auto-refresh-if-changed at 5 second intervals, an audio iChat, and a few heavily loaded IRC channels managed to chew through a bit of my bandwidth at the time.
I see so many Windows logos on the big projection screens they use for presentations
Half the bigger projectors run Windows CE as their OS.. you could probably get a BSOD from that during a linux presentation too. Bugger if your project caught a CE virus
Why don't you guys just write a 15 line program that checks the first 50 replies to stories, and filter out 49 of them that say anything about it being a repost.
Because:
20% of slashdot would complain - because they hadn't read the first one.
I find belief in a kind and loving God difficult because of events like the tsumani and the resulting suffering around some of the poorest areas in Asia and Africa.
True...
Not to mention the fact that the HD display is "widescreen' so a 4:3 broadcast misses out on a lot of screen real estate.
I tend to watch tv in a little corner of the monitor anyways, while gettign real work done. Not really a purist.
Half the time in your typical "1080" TV you are using scaling from the 720 broadcasts.. and TVs are crap.:) Pity the 2560 x 1600 pixels of the 30" HD display aren't a nice factor of 1080 either:)
Native resolution of even a lowly 23" Apple HD Display can do your 1080i with room to spare. Step up to a 30", and talk with the guys over at eCinema Systems.
Why wait for TV to get there. Pipe straight into the broadcasters feed:/
Judging by the job openings on their website, it would seem that the staff is composed of two very busy secretaries, and two PhDs. Ten years research...? Maybe the 320 (person) years includes the failed attempts by the other companies, and the secretaries;).

I don't think we are expected to read every single known (or unknown) issue with every bit of software before installing.
After all - the install instructions do say, insert disk - sit back and relax.
I'd normally never touch the stuff - but the Mother in Law needed someone to do the SP2 install - and she offered money.
First reboot the machine would barely get to the boot splash screen before freezing. After a few hours of torturous anxiety (never expected any major problems!) I managed to pin the problem down (Windows, of course) and get it booted. Didn't have the parent posts luxury of Safe Boot working -- and I find out now MS knew about it... and typically - blames the manufacturer.
I quote:
CAUSE
This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
Your computer uses an Intel Pentium 4 or Intel Celeron D processor that is based on Prescott C-0 processor stepping.
Your computer has a BIOS version that is out of specification.
Worked fine ever since - and a lot less "can you fix my computer" phone calls from the Mother in Law with SP2 so far. Now all I get is my Father in Law - "I think she broke my computer" - as he now has the rejected old PIII/550 that inspired the new machine purchase - it has an upgrade of 95/98 and other issues.

mmm. Warmed my lap.. and did a little bit. 0% idle.
...they'll price it at £699 in the UK despite the dollar rate.
Aye, and $1300 NZD.
Apple Hardware $ vs £ vs $
over here we read the title, and don't click ;)
must be.. the rest of them think they are "redundant" and "informative" and "funny"
Because:
Ya.. me too -- but google helps.

Maybe they're including the failed research by the other companies in the 320 man-years ;)

Yeah.. you need iTunes on your computer. :)
Yeah I reckon BS as well..

Even with my US Paypal it still asks for another credit card. Looks like i'll have to stick with gift certs off ebay (via paypal)
iTMS in NZ please. Or just accept non-US credit cards.. via Paypal even
I do HAVE a credit card loaded on the account - but Paypal STILL asks for another one. I might have one.. but two? No skip sux!
Any idea to get round this?

Blow by blow is over here
