That's funny, because I can open up PowerPoint and select "Remove Hidden Data", which coincidentally enough is a feature I pulled from Microsoft's site. It does a fantastic job of removing all that hidden data, too. This is pure user error in not using this function; it has absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft versus OSS.

Did I claim that apple was hyping this thing? No. I was pointing out that everyone and their mother is hyping this thing, particularly /.. (yes that was my FP) The only reason people are excited is because it's Apple releasing it. If it were MS, Nokia, Motorola, HTC, etc etc releasing it, it might make the back cover news. The fact that they're only adding very small improvements over other (cheaper) PDA phones makes this even more ridiculous. Oh, and they're taking steps backward in other areas too, but lets ignore that part.

The only reason people would really get excited is because they're suckers to marketing. The only real innovation I see here is the voicemail navigation, and I can't see why anyone would pay $500 for that feature. People will blindly buy this thing because it's got an Apple engraved on the back of it, and they see "4 GB of music" stamped on it. Nevermind the specs or any other competing devices that are already on the market. So as much as I wish this thing would DIAF, it's going to be successful because people are idiots to brand recognition.

The iPhone will no doubt provide a significantly better multimedia device than current mp3/phone hybrids. However most mp3 player/phone devices cost 1/5 of what the iPhone will cost, and even a few hundred dollars more than 'comparable' devices (for the 'hip' crowd) like the sidekick. That's a HUGE difference. I don't recall exact pricing, but I don't think the ipod cost that much more than other comparable devices when it was released. For sure it couldn't have cost 2.5x.

Even though this is an MP3 playing phone, I just don't see it overtaking the current feature phone market for it's media capabilities. I know a lot (most?) consumers are idiots, but right now you can pick up an mp3 phone for ~$100, toss in a 4GB card, and still have $300 left. For $500 they still have to hit the PDA phone crowd, and a big chunk of that market are business users.

Well, simply? Yes. It isn't just MS stuff though, if a business already has PDA phones in use they also are likely to have Blackberry services as well. From what I can find the iPhone doesn't support that either.

Let me preface this with "I'm not a hardcore business user." I don't sit at home answering work emails. I sync my phone with Outlook primarily to get my calendar items and contacts. If I couldn't do that, there would be zero business use for my phone. Having my meetings on my phone has saved my skin on multiple occasions...it's definitely a must have feature for me. As far as I can tell, the iPhone doesn't allow me to do this.

I don't know about this iCal deal, but if it's in leopard that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to hit the iPhone, or does it?

The forced on screen keyboard (and the lack of 3G) are generally the only things that are keeping me from having any interest in this thing. So what's your solution? How would you design the interface? The 'binary choice' UI is designed that way to conserve precious screen space. After you've added 7 (large) touch screen buttons, where are you going to put the content? Or would the 7 touch screen buttons show up when you activate them? How would you activate them, via a soft key? Many apps make use of the "tap and hold" context menu if you are using the touch screen, so you're not always forced to the two button UI.

The 'common option' | 'menu' setup just plain works well. Hitting the right softkey, then scrolling to my option, pressing in the scroll wheel to make my choice is quick and accurate. The touch screen is there mainly for speed. The soft keys are there for one-handed convenience. Just because I have a touch screen doesn't mean I want to constantly be using it. Leave the soft keys, thanks.

Exactly. I'm running WM6 on an HTC Hermes, and it's extremely fast and responsive. There are several improvements 'under the hood' such as Office Mobile 2007, updated Pocket Internet Explorer, HTML email, improved internet sharing, Windows Live integration, better bluetooth, better battery life, windows update, etc. There aren't any blazingly new features over WM5, just a lot of tweaks to the software. I'm guessing that's why MS has offered free WM6 upgrades to the carriers.

Of course the carriers will load down their roms with a ton of crap, so to get the most out of it you'll have to cook your own rom to get rid of it...but they should be blaming their carriers for that one.
