I don't blame Kevin, per se-- I never saw Kevin do anything "real tech" any time I watched the show; it was all skript kiddie. Maybe my standards are too high, but I didn't consider any of his tips, tricks, hacks, cracks, etc, all that useful, or all that original, for that matter. I haven't really watched G4 in recent weeks, except for the occasional X-Play now and then.

All I'm saying is that I didn't appreciate the kind of work he does, and what he represents. Maybe I'm more mature, I dunno-- I just can't stand his way of doing and presenting things.

My favorite segment had to be the dark tips where Kevin would show how to hack XBOX, sniff network data, ect. Now that this segment will no longer be FCC controlled, I would imagine the segments may be much more interesting.

I could agree with you, but he only did stuff like this once there was some oh-so-1337 script-kiddie approach to it. Once the "real" security and hacking (hacking as in modding) scenes laid the groundwork and then made some nice t001z to use, then he'd be on the screen showing how 133t he was by typing a URL into a text box and then hitting a button. That's not interesting to me-- maybe mildly so, if I didn't know how to use TCPdump, or nmap already.

Many have stated this before, but he's nothing more than a script kiddie. If he's doing it, someone else is doing it, or has done it, and they're doing it with far more skill and insight.

Perhaps I should have posted AC, but I wear my current 30% Flamebait, 30% Insightful, 20% Troll moderation with pride. My gripe isn't so much with Kevin, per se, but the popularity of his kind-- so much fluff, so little obvious technical knowledge. I'd much rather hear a discussion on the technical merits of PCI-E vs older architectures, rather than seeing some d00ds trip out over a case modded out with a glow-lightning static ball, or pimped-out with the latest blowhole cutting and side window etching.

While that might be cool to some, there are "cooler" things in my book. Why waste time on lame "Dark Tips" like setting a system's floppy drive on fire, or why a CD-ROM with some obscure 1337-h4X0r bootable distro is more "deviant" than another 1337-h4X0r on a floppy, just because it can go through a metal detector? Why not talk about how many great bootable Linux distros there are out there that could actually have you be productive, rather than just have some kind of 1337 factor? That's just an example, though.

But, he does represent to me the stripping away of what little of TechTV/ZDTV was left. Back then, every show was informative, even the shows that were somewhat silly. Never once would you have seen some dorks lighting a floppy drive on fire be labelled a "Tip", and never would you see a commercial with some chick's ass shaking to advertise the new "my ricer is pimped out" show.

Never thought I'd be "hear hear"-ing an AC, but I couldn't stand Kevin Rose. He represented everything to me that I didn't like about the ScreenSavers losing Leo and Patrick-- He's the new "Young, Hip", tech-person, with all the 1337 shit that lamers crave.

-1, Flamebait, here I come! I'm tired of goofy people like him exposing stuff that should be kept underground. There's no good reason that G4, a national network, should be talking about some "underground russian mp3 site", or anything remotely similar. It was saddening to see a timespot once occupied by people getting good computer advice now taken up by "d00d, how d0 I doenlaod t3h mp3zz? How can m4ke vodka more pure by using teh charcoel? "

I don't think he's done much good for the state of computing, or at least how younger folks and computing are portrayed in the world. He's a lamer, as far as I'm concerned, and I don't consider myself particularly smug.

I hear he's a nice guy, I know some people who have met him. That just goes to show you, I guess, that you can be cool and be stupid, both at the same time.

I realize that Nintendo doesn't see any of that additional money that gets spent-- they saw all they were going to see upon the first purchase of the cartridge. But, I don't see any other market where there is demand for the games I specifically mentioned. Another poster in this thread mentioned games like Paperboy, Deja Vu, and some others commanding a higher price because of their rarity. I thought the "true" market price of an item is the amount that you could sell if for-- if you can swing a copy of DW4 for $50, then that's your market price.

But, I agree with you wholeheartedly on one point: current market prices for old cartridges would have little effect on the prices Nintendo charged for the games if they rereleased them. I could easily see a game that would be $.50 - $2.00 on the used market going for around $9.99 if it were released for the DS, or another system.

I recall a recent interview with Bill Gates (the link escapes me) that stated the Xbox is specifically not intended to be a media hub-- the PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition is going to do that.

Love it or hate it, one could see some benefit in that approach. Firstly, by not having the Xbox be a possible media hub, you can cut costs by not including the neccesary input and circuitry used for video input. Second, Microsoft has only one Media OS to support without the Xbox. (Not that they're doing an incredible job with that, mind you)

Basically, they're trying not to have conflicting product offerings. They consider the PC to be more flexible for media options, like PVR, audio recording, TV watching, etc. The nature of the Xbox and the MCE OS will cause some overlap, but Microsoft is taking the wiser choice in their eyes by putting the media functions all on something they've been pushing for quite some time. Besides, in that same interview I read, Gates mentioned that the Xbox 360 could have some kind of interface into a PC running Media Center.

Have you used a PDA lately? They've got RAM for running applications, but the actual OS and some software is "installed" into a Flashable ROM. So, you're left with more memory for storage and application execution. I know my Pocket PC allocates a portion of RAM for programs, and the rest for storage. I've got 64MB of RAM, and I have a perfectly capable movie and audio player, web browser, spreadsheet, word processor, calculator, etc.
