The 1.1.5 version's been out quite a while, a couple weeks in fact. I could have sworn that it would have been announced long before now... in fact, right when this was posted I had just finished an Ultima Linux package for the new version.

Soon I'm sure we'll see a Microsoft funded comparison between Office and OpenOffice.

    Please don't give them ideas!!

As for the claims of things you can do with Micro$oft Office: Most people don't have a clue what half of those are, which is why Micro$oft is using them. They really aren't actual features – or at least aren't implemented in Office – but if they can convince people that they are using long technical buzzwords, they can get $$$.

And for the record, I know a bunch of people who use Micro$oft products every day, and can't stand them. Our school district insists on shoving these stupid Micro$oft apps down everyone's throats, and not only do the (more tech-skilled) students like me not like them, but even most of the teachers don't. Are these really useful features?

    • A dancing animated paperclip
    • The ability to insert a "happy-face character"
    • Automatic hiding of all your toolbar buttons
    • Re-designing the interface in every new version so that you have to take another Office course to learn how it works now
    • ...

    Just my opinion.

(PS, if you have a Linux box and a high-speed Internet connection, you can probably set up a machine with SSH/VNC so that you can remote-access a system you like. Works every time for me.)

  8. Trust me, this can only be a good thing... on Vista Launch Good for Desktop Linux? · · Score: 0

As a Linux developer myself, I'm rather pleased to hear that my suspicions have been confirmed. All the features that Vista's offering are already available in Linux (along with a great deal more), and besides that, the system requirements are definitely insane. If you still haven't heard of just how many systems Linux runs on, I just installed the latest version of my distribution on a Pentium-166 machine with 32MB RAM and a 2.5GB disk. All security updates as well. And it runs beautifully, even better than a Celeron-1.8G with 384MB RAM and Windows XP, if you can believe it.

Anyway, despite what some people insist Linux is slowly moving onto pre-installed systems. Emperor Linux sells laptops pre-configured with just about all the major distros, and there are companies (and even individuals like me) selling pre-loaded Linux desktops. And I'm pretty sure that others will eventually catch on.

I'll be honest, though, the project I'm really hoping to see succeed is ReactOS. Linux is a good system – and I'm definitely a loyal user / developer who's not likely to quit using Linux any time soon – but I think that for users more used to Micro$oft's system, ReactOS would probably be a better solution. Plus it's got a cool logo. :-)

Besides, why would sex.com or whatever other porn site there is want to change domains anyway, since .com's are already convenient enough for them?

Once again, the industry's created something without really thinking through it and considering if it's really going to do any good.

  13. Worst nightmare on If Microsoft Went Open Source · · Score: 0

The whole point of Linux is the freedom from everything else: Freedom to do whatever you want with it, freedom from Micro$oft, freedom to download and share with no copyright issues because it's free software. If Micro$oft went out and did this with Linux it would be my worst nightmare.

Now I don't say this unthinkingly. If they wanted to make a Linux distribution I wouldn't object at all, since publicity for Linux is publicity for Linux. However, if they were to pull the infamous "embrace, extend, extinguish" move like this article discusses it would be completely defeating the purpose of Linux as far as I'm concerned – and millions of other users too.

So if they ever wanted to start a Linux thing, fine, I'd be the first to apply for a job there. But if they wanted to completely take over Linux as we know it...

I've worked with Windows and Linux, and a little bit with Mac OS. Personally I feel that Linux is really the best system to use; Windows takes forever to get the base system up and running, whereas my Linux distro I just stick in the CD, install, and in about five minutes (literally) it's all ready to use. Mac OS X is only nice because Apple does control both hardware and software; I think that the only system designed for anything other than what its creators use is Linux.

Everything that article says is pure bullshit.

First of all, I am a Linux hacker, I actually maintain my own distribution, so may as well get that disclaimer out of the way.

    Now to the point.

The whole time I've been using Linux I have never said anything about any BSD system. Ever. I've made plenty of comments about Windows, and even other Linux distributions (Mandriva, ...) but nothing about FreeBSD, OpenBSD, etc. None of them. (Of course, my own distribution is perfect, it's just all the others I have problems with ;-)

So who gave this guy the right to attack a bunch of guys who put in a lot of hard work and often for nothing in exchange?

Also, I don't think they should complain about comments in code. I often put even stranger things in stuff I write and nobody complains.

    So basically, to summarize...

    • There is nothing wrong with BSD. Of course, I haven't used it so can't really comment too much, but so far the only problem is the personality of one of its maintainers.
    • There is nothing wrong with (most) Linuxes. Some exceptions apply though. Most have no problems however.
    • There is plenty wrong with Windows. I won't go into detail.
    • Mr. De Raadt really needs to stop flaming us just because our operating system is more popular and most likely better for various reasons, a good many of which involve nothing but mere chance.

    No wonder it's spelled "B.S.-D".

I will admit to having replaced at least half the components, but that was only upgrading, the originals still work. And I've never had a problem with an Intel processor. (AMD's, on the other hand...)

    Just my 2 cents.
