  1. Fonts will always confuse me on linux on Updated And Unified Font HOWTO · · Score: 5, Insightful

The reason for this seems to root from the fact that gnome for example attempts to create standards across the system for applications to use in their framework and then applications try to allow you to modify the fonts in them seperately. Then you have multiple ways to adjust fonts system wide as well. I think that a lot of work is still needed with Linux and fonts. Its something (and one of the only things) that Windows and MacOS do better. Its still something that is easily tolerable.

Indeed. For simply distributing something that someone else created without letting them get their money is worth 15 years for some reason. Someone can be arrested for cocaine, beat their wife, have sex with animals, or steal the equivalent amount of copyrighted materials from a store and still not get as many years in prison... So according to US law and most laws in other nations, one can steal all this stuff and keep it to himself, and get off with less jail time then someone who simply gets a copy that was already stolen and allows others to steal it from him... Confusing yes but then again remember how long congress takes to care about something. Also remember that when money is involved people drop logic and morals and think about how they can save their cash flows.

The funny thing about this attempt is that UK is even less for software patents then the US. If they can't get the US to believe them what makes them think the EU and the UK government will hear them out anymore? European nations are even more pro open source and anti software patents. Hopefully SCO goes bankrupt with this poor decision.

Everyone in Washington just wants a governor at this point. 15. Biast on Debugging Indian Computer Programmers · · Score: 1

I don't mean to be hostile at all in this comment but I must mention that I don't think this article is fair to american programmers either. For one it is true that almost everyone's relatives at some point were immigrants but remember they came over and did things that didn't require higher level education. I think people are irritated because they spend years of their time learning this stuff and paying for it to be replaced by someone outside the country. They fail to see why immigrants have to come over to the US if they have training in their own country for high level learning. Why is India and other countries training people to send them over here? That is something that boggles my mind. I don't see the reason to waste money on training people to send to another country. Its not the US policies that are out of wack in my mind. I think that maybe these countries lack some pride or something. I wouldn't move to halfway across the world for a better job and then renounce my citizenchip. Remember when you come across the world into another country and take a job that someone else wanted from that country you should expect them to be upset. You went out of your way to get their job... I'm not trying to be an asshole here but there is always going to be two perspectives and I can see both of them. This problem is reoccuring throughout history and is the same argument everytime. So I don't think complaining on either side is going to solve it. I think people just need to accept that anyone can take their job and maybe people need to also consider having a bit more respect for their own country.

You are going about it completely the wrong way. DSL and cable DO NOT work great. There is a limited capaticity on any line or wired network. The wires can only take in so much bandwidth. Therefore in populated areas you have to install Fiber Optic networks just to maintain highspeeds. The reality is we need better technology because populations are constantly increasing and cable networks are constantly becoming bigger. A lot of people see this in the fact that they have constant downtimes because of it. I for example lose internet at primetimes very often due to high connectivity. Wireless airships remove this. Then its just radio waves being sent back and forth and it is less costly then satellites which are already being used too much according to some. The world is going wireless is what I keep telling everyone. You should expect to see wired networks declining until they are gone because they are so limited. The question is what affect will all the radio traffic have on the world. That I do not know and it would be interesting to see if anyone finds or has found what happens with increased radio traffic in areas. We might be setting ourselves up for an interference nightmare in 20 years or so where nothing is usuable because there is so much clutter. Essentially filling our air full of radio waves until we make the air into a traffic nightmare equivalent to rush hour traffic in cities.
