if you want to go into details on this (again, speculative) we could talk bullshit about it all day.. I have no problem playing devil's advocate, I'd just like you to know that your attack on my argument is not an attack on my beliefs. :)

While i agree with you, i really think the conversation system is a natural progression from games like KOTOR and Baldur's Gate. Really, if you remove the voice and the thumbstick element there's very little difference, and those games actually do have the 'much deeper' aspect you're talking about.

as much as Mass Effect is an actual RPG (and a good one, even though it has a large FPS-esque component), it does very little that hasn't been done before. It just does it all pretty well, and tells a good story in the process.

The hate for Oblivion is pretty similar to the hate for Bioshock. It's a sequel to a series loved by rpg-geeks (like myself) for it's complexity, which has been severely reduced in terms of gameplay and environment.

I know in both cases the graphics have been scaled up, but the interfaces have both been reduced to Xbox360 controls, even on the PC... Perhaps that's a contributing factor aswell.. PC gamers feel like they're playing a console shooter instead of a PC RPG, and in a lot of cases this simply equates to dumbing down.

These problems aren't native to the format. A 2 page text document can easily be 2meg if it's scanned at 600dpi and no OCR is applied.this particular problem relates only to the knowledge of the user, and in that regard i don't think anyone can solve all the problems. While we're at it, you already knew this.

btw, your point on Acrobat Pro is moot, since there have been free PDF authoring tools available for years now, and publicly available export classes and functions for a variety of languages.. I could write a 3 line app that outputs passable (sparse, perhaps, but passable) PDFs. That's the benefit of having an open standard, anyone can implement a product using it.

Of those cases, only the first one is even remotely comparable. The damages they're claiming for are speculative.. that is, they would not have made or lost any money had the defendant acted differently, except in the specific case where the defendant went out and bought the CDs.

Nobody was injured in this crime, and nobody's livelihood was threatened. In addition, and also very importantly, she made no profit from the transfer of data. Whether or not 'making available' constitutes deliberate propagation is still being debated.

Yeah, as you suspected, it's not the case in reality.. Japan, and especially the manga and anime producers have a long history of fair reuse of characters, up to a certain point. Doujin (Hobby) artists are not discouraged from recreating scenes featuring famous characters, rewriting them for alternate outcomes or favoring the viewpoints of different characters. This is a long standing tradition in Japan, where manga makes up ~70% of the publicly printed material.
