That's mildly ridiculous.. since, as you pointed out, calling Dan Rather a journalist is like calling GWB a 5 Star General, CBS really didn't have the grounds to fire him for journalistic inaccuracy or incompetence.
I think if he follows that line of argument, he's gunna win that one for sure.
I'm not going to bother with any lame-ass attempts to get you modded up, but i think someone missed your last line..
i know opinion isn't a good reason for moderation, but i really feel (from the clips of Fox News and O'Riley that i've seen) that you're just not too far off the mark.
If they weren't so tied up in protecting the sanctity of their IP, they'd be able to freely write converters between their older formats and their new format, thus removing the need for version-specific tags.
what if i take your advice and end up more confused? Can i also pick on Miguel's apparent habit of changing the context of questions to avoid addressing the point? What is the point of saying that the US isn't the only place on earth with software patents if the point of the question was distribution inside the US? How can Miguel realistically say that Novell will never have patent protection issues with Microsoft? Why does it not suprise me that people who have worked extensively with the binary versions of MS' formats would find the XML variant easier to implement than ODF, and consequently, what is the point of bringing that up at all?
Really, i'm trying to keep an open mind here, but i'm finding it a bit difficult..
Yes, everyone seems to be missing this. the ACCC are actually not that bad when it comes to these issues, although nobody is perfect.
The lawsuit has nothing to do with the way search results are displayed, it's all about deceptive marketing by other complaines using google advertising.
They're the biggest rating comedy team in the country at the moment. Last season, they made a mockery of a bidding war between channels 7 and 9 for their services.
for reference (for those who haven't been to Australia), the majority of people here watch only free-to-air television. The ABC, the network which Chaser broadcast on, is government owned and generally attracts a much smaller audience than the commercial stations.
we already know that all our politicians are dickheads.. the leftwingers are fighting a battle to be as big a collective group of dickheads as the rightwingers.
John Howard has been caught lying before elections at least twice, with ignorance of the facts as his only defense, Alexander Downer should have been thrown out for incompetence years ago (perhaps during one of his various international scandals), and Peter Costello is just waiting for John Howard to die of old age.
At the moment, the other major political party is offering nothing but copies of the policies offered by the government, and everyone is preoccupied with making each other look bad. Not unlike America, i guess..
umm.. what? I'm not sure what you mean..
..I know where I am.. and i'm gathering from your use of the word 'us' that i'm half a world away from you. That, i admit, probably makes my perception of these events somewhat different to yours.
I completely agree about the hate though.. It's terrible that people fight and kill for ideologies, especially when the killing undermines what the ideologies are supposed to protect.
Contentious issue, forsure.. but you can be aware of all those facts and still be of the opinion that the war is frivolous and politically motivated.
Personally, if i were an American, i'd be outraged that the real masterminds of the 9/11 attacks were never discovered, and i think i'd primarily be angry with the administration's obvious agenda push and the lack of competent support by intelligence agencies with massive budgets.
I'd like to contend that the attacks wouldn't have happened if America's foreign policy were a bit more benign over the last 30 or so years.. but it's not a claim i can acutally substantiate.
funny how slashdotters hate history, politics, economics, etc, (see the recent story on engineering colleges costing more) but the first thing they try to do when a subject like this comes up is dabble in amateur history, amateur politics, amateur sociology, and so forth and so on. and since they are completely untrained, they usually make a huge mess of it, and come off (to anyone familiar with the subject matter) as ignorant blowhards.
Guess there's just a common perception that Arts topics are something that any technically trained individual should be able to handle.. Regardless of that, many of those peeps who have been commenting have been unable to differentiate fact from personal opinion, which is somewhat important in both arts and engineering.
To clarify, i apologise for mixing metaphors, but i'm really, honestly not sure why you suggested UO.. The OP was looking for an MMO with gameplay like oblivion. The only thing they have even remotely in common is their skill system, and even then it's not the same..
As far as skill is concerned, on Oceania (at least.. i couldn't play anywhere else..) what seperated the good players from the dead was ping times.
Indeed there were no Legendaries or Epics. These skill levels were added in Kingdom Reborn, with a client just as buggy and useless as the original, touting an 'advanced 3d engine' which still used some of the same sprites from the original client. Great.
You know WHY they were added? Because the game that essentially defined the grind wasn't grindy enough anymore.
Your stab is noted, btw.. if i could think up a witty retort, i would have done so already. Instead, i'll just stand amazed and gape because you recommended UO in the first place*. The only appeal i can see it having is fringe appeal, or retro perhaps. Some kind of fucked up retro that's completely unaware of anything better.
*no, wait.. did you just call Oblivion innovative??
to quote a UO playing friend of mine "please go die in a chemical fire".
UO is terrible. It was only acceptable when it was released because it was the only thing most people knew about as far as persistent online games were concerned, and even then that's because Sierra didn't advertise The Realm anywhere near enough.
UO suffered (and in some cases still suffers) from terrible gameplay and lag issues, as well as having a solid community of griefers, necessitating a shard system which removes PvP from the game completely for anyone who wants to play without being constantly pwned and teabagged by Legends and Epics.
Otoh, they let you collect the brains of those you slaughter.
Hi... Welcome to Slashdot.. we might as well go play in /b/, or stand in traffic.

Pretty sad..
aaah.. +6 Funny.
gg blhack, gg.
affirmative. looks like they're either full or slashdotted.
Obvious answer: Cuba know it's crap, and want the US to have to deal with it. They don't care, they're effectively immune to it.
Some people think 'the IT industry' is limited to a subset of 'the consumer industry'. Much like toasters.
If they weren't so tied up in protecting the sanctity of their IP, they'd be able to freely write converters between their older formats and their new format, thus removing the need for version-specific tags.

The summary is quite misleading.
as much as that seems to be the consensus atm, what do we do when the post comes from Miguel's own blog?

indeed.. it might be said that it's very lucky that it was a group of comedians, not someone looking to do actual harm.
i don't think you understand..

does this mean that women who miscarry are commiting manslaughter, for failing to save the life of an unborn child?
seriously, i really would like to know your opinion on this..
according to george lucas, the version of A New Hope with the school of humorous singing animated spacefish is the unmolested version.
in other news, for loops sometimes use iteration.

Not at all.. i'm in your camp, matey.
correct! If Activision held the rights, maybe Fallout Online wouldn't be dead in the water.
