i think you have this the wrong way around. MMORPGs are based on this style of gameplay for lack of something better.

I love my PSP. but for one reason, and one reason alone: Makai Senki Disgaea Portable.

Of course, i have to play it in japanese. There's not enough support of NISA to release it in english yet, apparently.

And of course, i had to hack my PSP to do that.

but the port is great.. It looks excellent, has more features than the PS2 version of the game, suspends and resumes perfectly when you flick the power button.. it just works really well. As a games machine, the PSP is perfect for RPGs and Tactics games. It just so happens that there aren't many good ones for it. A company less obsessed with 'next gen' features might have seen this and done something about it.

That's fine, as long as the parents are themselves encouraged to use the technology, or at least to be comfortable with it's application. In this case, the sensationalism appears to be born from fear, or at least has been given that spin somewhere, and that's good for noone.

Don't teach parents to fear network connections. Teach them to set up decent firewalls and encryption, and maybe play an active part in their kids' lives instead of relying on a tv/console/computer.

That might have been the case with an OS sold by another vendor, but since Microsoft own both Vista and XP (honestly the preferred option for most uninformed folks), all they have to do to 'force' adoption of Vista is limit the volume of new XP installs... by, for example, not selling XP to OEMs anymore.

no, i'm not suggesting that they will, or that it's a good idea at all (unless they are blind and stupid), but it's a possible mid-term strategy.

Obviously, submitting data to the vendor is a good idea if you want the problem fixed, but there are numerous cases of vendors taking legal action against researchers who do. It may be that they felt that going public without releasing specific details would shield them from harm. The vendors can either claim that they are incorrect and that the bug doesn't exist OR they can sue. But not both.

I don't think that playing showpony for John Gruber amounts to submitting data to Apple, and i'm glad they didn't take up his (stupid, loaded) challenge.
I'm also not sure who to believe regarding the actual submission of the exploit data to Apple, since Apple mouthpieces have been quoted saying that they recieved nothing regarding the exploit, but released a security patch for a near-identical flaw in September.

Are we talking morally, legally, tactically, etc? How about principles, or specifics?

In general, I agree that there is (and should be) a justified amount of force avaliable to police, based on the specifics of the situation. The police are allowed to respond with equal force to what they believe the suspect has avaliable to them. For example, If the suspect is able-bodied and has a weapon of (almost) any description, the officers are justified in using their own.

The problem here is that the suspect didn't appear to pose a significant threat to anyone's life. If he had some kind of weapon, that might have been quite different.
And, no, i'm not sure that a handcuff counts, since the suspect was clearly overwhelmed.

Again, there are better places to do this and ways to do it. Especially when someone is filming you in the process.

I don't disagree with you, btw, and i've already said i believe that the suspect was likely an antagonist prior to the events shown on the video. However, I do think that the officers might have considered the legal implications of being shown striking the man's face on video.

Either way, you should probably pull your head in.

Regardless of who was at fault here, I am reasonably certain that 'tapping out' in this situation would have been almost identical to 'struggling'.

  20. Re:The video is propaganda. on Youtube Video Prompts FBI Probe of LAPD · · Score: 1

while your points are vaild, and it is probable that the suspect in question was, in fact, an antagonist prior to the events shown on the video, it must be said that these points are close to irrelevant in the situation. It's in the public eye now, and the opinions of the public are fickle.

Also, if punching a prone (position) suspect in the face is considered a vaild tactical method, it's no wonder that people get upset. I can think of a dozen methods that would be more effective, less obvious, and far less controversial than the 3 'calculated strikes'. One of them involves the 2nd officer putting the cuffs on the suspect, while the first restrained him. That, i believe, is the textbook method, and probably would have been sufficient given the circumstances.
