I think at this point it's pretty much common sense that something is going to be done to the ibook line with macworld occuring.. tomorrow I guess it would be (unless you're in a timezone in which it is currently monday.. in which case.. greeettiinngs frromm the paaassttt..), we know the intel switch is coming, we know they have said that they are likely to release the ibook and mini lines first with intel chips (yonah most likely it seems, that's about the only thing that would make any sense)

With the keynote occuring tomorrow, it's probably time to stop repeating the speculation, or at least vary it up a little, Jobs to release iRock, a portable Steve Jobs shrine, so you can worship him in all his bald glory anywhere you go! :o I know I'd buy one >.> (typing from my beloved 12" ibook G4).

It was a serious response when he had mentioned he has a Mac on his network, and nicecast is a very good web streaming software that could be connected to by any of his other systems (iTunes if you like, winamp, xmms and really any other media player can handle the stream from nicecast). Yet.. because he mentions the Mac option from his network, he's a troll.. right..

But, I don't remember ever hearing that we actually have the technology to produce enough carbon nanotube material to actually build a prototype device of some sort let alone a cable spanning to LEO. I realize it's 14 years away.. but there's no guarentee we will actually have the capacity by that time. As far as I'm concerned we're better off building what can actually be finished come 2020 let alone tested and on our way to the moon.. again..

I do agree. I think it would help Sun's case alot, especially with the development of this jvm to allow linux distros to get theirs out, if the large portion of consumers already have sun's jvm, why would they download this one? And that would help keep Sun on top.

My sort of off-topic comment is next. Why does an open source jvm/wanting to open source the language appeal to everyone? Well okay, the idea of an open source jvm isn't so bad since with Sun's licensing, we can't get it bundled with our distros so it makes admins do some extra work etc. But, open sourcing the language? Personally, that scares the bejeebies out of me. As much as I am for open source, want to start my own open source project of some sort.. I don't think open sourcing a language is really that great idea, it allows democratic control and alot of forks, possibly harming the language while having it controlled by sun avoids these problems and lets it be ruled with an iron fist. When it comes to a programming language people know and use, it'd be nice not to have the risk of changes to earlier code, even if it does help a little bit, a change ot syntax would break alot of programs running through a new jvm version. Not good for the language.. Anyways, just my 2cents.

  8. Re:Light passes through? on A Practical Guide to DIY LCD Projectors · · Score: 1

The backlight of an LCD is a luminescent sheet behind the 'sheet that faces you and has pretty pictures' so, the light passes through that part. (okay, ibooks have a luminescent sheet, others may have another lighting mechanism I seem to remember a friend's compaq armada having lighting from the right and left sides of the screen basically shining across.... very irritating in low light as you could actually see the swath of light from the sides.. *shiver* [old old 700Mhz era armada, so relax those of you who like the armadas, I agree, very nice laptops, magnesium lid, sexy]).

So naturally as one would assume, the plastic/magnesium/titanium/whatever the heck your lid is made out of casing comes off, the luminescent screen in my case comes off (oh to hell with taking mine apart) and the LCD screen itself is used to pass light through.

My ISP is cogeco in Ontario, Canada. Out of 10.. I think I'd have to give them a 10.

They have great, helpful support (not mindless lackeys, they can actually help you with your problem, and quickly). I have had no downtime in.. since the major outage we had last year. And any brief downtime I've ever had lasts approximately 10 minutes. My ISP has a practically flawless uptime record, great service.

As for value, I pay $50 CDN a month for a 6Mbit/640Kbit line and get those speeds pretty much all the time, any lower speeds is due to server and not ISP side. They do give what they promise. I'd recommend cogeco as an ISP in the niagara region to anyone.

  14. Re:Forced on Are CRTs History? · · Score: 1

I always told myself I would not buy an LCD monitor because the refresh rates are lower(/response time) so you get streaking in games, the viewing angle is alot worse (move ~35deg. to the left or right and you start losing the ability to see the picture), and that it wasn't worth the colour reproduction. The last time I replaced my monitor was a year ago and I refused to spend the extra money on an LCD monitor and went with a CRT.

I recently bought an apple ibook for my work at school (I'm a compsci major and REFUSE to use a low end laptop, and the apple ended up being a cheaper price than the x86 lappy I would even consider: a thinkpad.) and well, the LCDs on apple laptops are amazing. I think if desktop LCDs are anywhere near the quality of what is in ibooks and powerbooks, a CRT would not be even considered next time I buy a new monitor for my desktop. The viewing angle is not a problem with these (I can be almost facing the side of the LCD and the picture is still viewable). I do not get motion streaks in any games: unreal tournament for example. The colour reproduction is worth it as far as I'm concerned, everything is far more crisp and clear. I'm not really worried about CRTs falling out of the market because in what I do, I would not consider one.

As I said in the previous paragraph, I am a compsci major. I spend hours coding in front of a screen. I can't stand to use my CRT for that period of time, it puts alot of strain on the eyes and it tends to give headaches if you don't take breaks etc. (yes, I know I just solved my own problem, take a break, but sometimes that isn't possible when you're a procrastinator). So for any desktop publishing, coding, LCDs are the way to go IMHO.

  15. Punishment on HS Students Steal SSNs to Prove They Can · · Score: 1

Assuming the article is correct in that they have had the data for months and only started talking about it now that they school had sent home a letter regarding the matter, there is a perfectly good reason to punish them now, it has nothing to do with being punished for doing good. Had they alerted the school or the IT department of the break-in when they performed the attack, they would have had some credibility in saying that they had done it to prove that it could be done. Instead they held onto the data for months and only brought this to the attention of the school and other people involved when they had been found out. There is little reason to believe they did it for the good of the school.
