Sure, put warning on whatever you want. The people who smoke ignore those warnings. The people who play video games continue to do so. And everybody's happy in the end. Put a warning on me: Too Sexy. Ladies watch out! (Where's that come from?!)
Why should teachers have to learn Linux or another OS? The Windows OS is easy to adapt to if you have little computer experience. Your average teacher doesn't need to learn a different OS or another set of apps. If the decision applied only to computer departments, well maybe, but for general use with a plethora of tools and software available that the average teacher is accustomed to, Windows will suffice.
The reality is a lot of computers run Windows and it's not going to be detrimental for kids to learn Microsoft OS, tools and technologies even if it's fun for us to talk about evil tactics and dumping Microsoft. I think a lot of the time Windows gets into schools because it's a consistent and familiar GUI experience. Kids can learn on it -- they have lots of time to make up their own minds when they get old enough, reaching college and university, etc. all kinds of OS's and tools are used.
Cost-wise if the budget can support it, then the budge can support it. I'm not going to stop buying Dempster's whole wheat bread for no-name brand until I actually run short on money.
But on a free service, people, you don't have "rights" to "demand" jack shit. If you don't like my terms for free hosting, then shuffle your cheap ass off to another host
As soon as the hosting company makes the decision to take on user data (free or not) it implicitly assumes the responsibility to take care of the data (unless terms state otherwise) because it has decided to host the data. Legally, it's not only about money once the decision is made to accept user data. Data is the most important thing and the reason why computers exist. (i.e. Let my laptop be destroyed as long as I can have my files transferred to a different one). However if you're terms state you can instantly remove the data from the user or destroy it then so be it because the user has agreed beforehand.
Most people look for opportune timing and weigh everything but most of them aren't entrepreneurs. You're responsible for creating the reality too. Most entrepreneuristic efforts aren't realized from a fixed guideline of safety rules and don't occur with appropriate timing. You either take the plunge or else you never will. There are many free entrepreneur guidelines out there to provide people realistic expectations of sacrifice and gain from such endeavours.

Agree with your post except I doubt the predcition "in just a few years and Flash will be history" because not only is Flash heavily entrenched but that would require Flash devs to change their skill sets for this to happen. Something different is going to happen however I don't doubt Sun will have a piece of the pie this time.
BTW, weren't some of the codecs or media pieces used proprietary... I have to go back and re-read but meh.. having too much fun running JavaFX "applets?" right now...
I have a friend who always tries to do the right thing and it drives everybody ape-shit crazy because he stresses over right and wrong so much that he can't function in life and doesn't do anything. At 36 he can't move out from his parent's home, change jobs, etc. etc. All he can do is turn everything into an ethical and moral problem because that's where's he's happiest.... now about that eBook thing... just read the damn thing however you want and choose a method that lets you do it.
If your team has the coding ability I'd suggest creating a different product, maybe even within the same industry. There's more than just code to be concerned about -- the business knowledge and details you have acquired from partners and clients in the industry might work against you on the imitation product.
I work on one of the LHC experiments, so I'm posting anonymously too.
What are we having for lunch tomorrow guys? Maybe someone can spot me a ten because I haven't made it to the ATM yet.
After reading the first part of TFA I realized he's developing in a Microsoft environment running on a virtual machine on the Mac. So yes he's developing "on" the Mac, but not necessarily for the Mac. His Mac is basically being used as a web browser for testing.
Nevermind that it's second-rate and vastly inferior to Linux in more aspects than I care to count. Unless you look at the aspects where Linux is inferior to Windows.
crippling developing nations with Windows, future generations are gonna hate us more than you can ever imagine... Nothing is being forced on them. It's the developing country's choice what to deploy. There's no reason for "them" to hate "us" over their decision about these laptops.
Dammit the incessant arguing gets tiring. Ultimately these countries are getting set up with hardware and software. Learning can be achieved on any of these platforms. Many techies are putting their OS arguments as priority over real people in developing nations. This is why things slow down. But this is tech news, and maybe we shouldn't expect to find many altruistic nerds.
How many times has an attractive woman looked at the customized UI for your software and thought "Wow. There's a guy I'd like to get it on with". (Answer: Zero)
If you're holding back any information about features on my computer that would make a woman say that, please divulge it!
developers will have no other option than to update their code to suit Microsoft's latest platform.
Likely you'll leave your Microsoft applications running on the platform version they're developed for while Microsoft may host many platform versions side-by-side. It's not unlike Google maps where developers can choose the API version their application runs with 1.x, 2.x, etc. Microsoft might be evil but they're not stupid, and they've been creating develop tools and frameworks for a very long time. They won't alienate their developers so there's no sense to assume a fearful stance because of a Slashdot submission like this.
Wow, both trollish and insightful, very engaging reading. Can't wait to see how this one turns out ...

We haven't been able to introduce animal and plant species properly to areas of the world or ourselves. And we should start playing with the climate?!

New game: Which driver having a BJ can get through the checkpoint without detection. That person will have the ultimate poker face.
That's what you said last month.

True, but not the only reason: it's also a damn slick piece of technology and surprisingly intuitive in its initial phase.

Where have all Intel 286s gone?
Where have all the men's rights gone?...

They'll all be dependent on us! ... assuming you mean the Windows OS on the XO laptops. Microsoft is based in the US but the company exists around the world so finding support shouldn't be hard from any country. You're too Microsoft focused. Your perceived entrapment case is larger than you think if you broaden your scope beyond only the OS:
OLPC is funded by member organizations, including AMD, Brightstar Corporation, eBay, Google, Marvell, News Corporation, SES, Nortel Networks, and Red Hat.[2][3] Each company has donated two million dollars. While OLPC is 'not for profit', the XO-1 manufacturers including many members are expected to receive 5-10% profit from sales of the unit. Companies are profiting fiscally and Microsoft isn't mentioned...
How did Microsoft becomes "us"?

Trying the 1.0 RC. Often getting "Internal Data Error" even in middle of song -- might as well be a BSOD. Yes, I will report it as a bug there too.

You're also Americans because you coined the term "Freedom Fries" and do weird shit with the word "free".
