A person shouldn't be charged for using free wi-fi. If the coffee shop owner wants to offer free wi-fi to its customers he/she can easily do so with a very simple setup. If the owner hasn't done this and basically pours wi-fi all over the area for anyone to use, it is logical to sue someone for "taking" some.
PS: I hate the word "wi-fi"...
The Turkish government and bureaucracy does not understand the Internet yet. The legal system still holds user generated content sites responsible for policing the content and may legally stop them a take down order (similar to DMCA take down notices). For international websites, they may disable access till the dispute is cleared (similar to freezing bank accounts in criminal cases.) However the legal system is not yet aware of using IPs instead of URLs and such blocks as this one end up being nothing more than an annoyance.
This mentality causes quite a lot of problems for Internet users in Turkey but let's not forget that this is not unique to Turkey. Before you criticize Turkey, please remember that the USA hosts a menace called RIAA whose sole purpose has become to stop P2P (they'd have better luck trying freeze hell.) And this latest block is not even remotely the stupidest legal act in Turkey; 1-2 years ago the government tried to revise IT related laws and declared that every web site must present its content to the local authorities, on paper, in triplicate! It took a few months to make the government understand that this was not possible.
Disclaimer: I'm a Turkish citizen but not Turkish...
How nice to hear that the Armenian Genocide really happened!
First of all the events happened 90+ years ago, second Turkey acknowledges that the Armenian population in the East regions were forced to relocate by the Ottoman Empire, third they also acknowledge a lot of deaths occured on both sides, fourth this is the first time I heard the death toll as 1.5 million, fifth there is a lot of evidence disproving that it was a genocide in a legal sense, sixth there are only a handful of governments with an official position (positive AND negative) on the "Armenian Genocide".
PS: I am a Turkish citizen but not Turkish and I criticize the nationalistic bullshit in Turkey a lot, but to hear so much disinformation in an unrelated topic gets on my nerves!
We are currently trying to disable MSN/Yahoo etc and make Sametime widely used in our company. v6 isn't that bad but v7 (which is about to be released) seems to be very good with connectors for AIM/Gtalk/Yahoo (and probably MSN). IBM is also trying hard to develop clients for Windows Mobile OSs. It also has very good web conferencing (whiteboard, app sharing, voice - video) options. I suggest that you give it a go.
This is what I would recommend for such a task. There are better options but this is the best mainstream option. From the reviews I have read, this drive is very durable. You can even bounce it off walls:)
You say that the author may be daft but he also says that he wants to duplicate his dvd/cd collection every few years. He DOES NOT want to make two copies of every disk the first time he burns them. While burning two copies of every cd might be useful in prolonging a cd collection's life a little, even the back-up cds will start failing/rotting after a while. It's also too late for that suggestion anyway as he probably has a few hundred cds already. He wants to make a copy of his collection, that's all.
I know this is off-topic but I submitted a story about this and it was rejected...
I am about to upgrade my computer and it's either going to be a Duron 800 or Tbird 900 but I am having a hard time deciding on a mainboard. There are a few chipsets that work with SDRam and DDRRam but I have read about nVidia's new chipset nForce. And I just read [in both Tom's Hardware forums and The Register] that due to implementation difficulties it might be delayed as long as two months. If it is going to come in a month or so, I am willing to wait. Has anyone else heard about this?
PS:BTW if nForce lives upto to the expectations, it's gonna kick Intel's a$$ and give Amd a deserved boost.
There is a short explanation from a VIA executive about the legal threats in Tom's Hardware Guide. Via is basicly saying that they will cover any legal fees board manufacters might be liable to pay to Intel for manufacturing Via's new chipset. It seems that Via is expecting a huge amount of profit from this new chipset.
I also have a question for those in the US. Can you buy single P4 chipsets without Rdram? When P4 came out here they only sold them with Rdram bundles, but now they actually sell P4s and their RDrams seperately. What they do is take out the Rdram that came in a P4 box and sell them seperately. I wonder if that's legal...
BTW, I am actually beginning to hate Intel. I never liked them since I have known about AMD and some of Intel's monopolisctic tactics but it gets very annonying to hear them sue or slander some other company or technology every week.
I know it's sort of meaningless to ask legal questions on/. but I'll ask anyway: Could I for example build a fan specificly designed for P4s without Intel's consent? Would I get sued? Just because Intel has filed patents?! I mean Via must have produced its own cpu interface for P4. Other than that, it's just the number and the layout of the CPU pins they are using. Intel's gonna sue Via because of this?!!? Can somebody explain?
I really don't care about the lack of visual changes. The look of this site is something I have grown very accustomed to. I was bothered with messaging just last night, it is funny that just 8 hours later it's here.
I'll go fiddle with my homepage options now...
Thanks people for Slashdot 2.2
First of all, apologies for not giving the exact details about the project I was given. Here they are:
The paper information is kept on a mysql server as a table with name, author, date and many other detailed fields. Files are stored in folder on the server in ps format. I was asked to prepare a search engine and a login procedure for adding/updating/deleting papers using php.
The search engine I prepared goes through the papers in the database one by one and searches for the keyword/phrase and displays the results according to the # of hits in each db entry. It also displays a link to each papers' details and a link to its file. The details reproduce a formatted version of the information in the db for the specific paper. It also produces a bibtex entry.
Thanks for all the URLs and the advice everyone. I have decided to tell my teacher about adding pdf versions of the papers to the page. We may or may not put actual pdf copies as there are not that many papers now, but I didn't know about those conversion commands. Now that I know, I won't have to convert the papers myself. I will try to post a link to the page as soon as it's up.
PS: One funny thing, after I submitted the question, I checked AskSlashdot for a few days and after that I assumed that it was rejected. I actually noticed this page just today when I was given a comment from this discussion to metamoderate. But still thanks again guys!..
I was actually asked to write the code to produce the bibtex entries as my supervisor for the project is a CS research assistant, too. But I don't know much about bibtex and they didn't give me enough details. Anyhow, the script I implemented produces a bibtex entry, with a few bugs perhaps.
Actually I have done the first part of my assignment, the search engine. It uses php/mysql but it is not up yet on the school server. Other than that the school database has the files in.ps format but I will tell them about the pdf format also. BTW atropa, thanks for the suggestion. My version is pretty much the same I guess and if you [or anyone else] wants a tarball of my version, email me with my/. nickname at yahoo.com and I'd be more than happy to send it.
Most people in the States or in Europe have no idea what the situation in Turkey is like. First, I want to talk about my situation:
I have been used Windows for 6 years now, since I bought my 1st PC. I currently have 98 Second Ed. installed and am waiting for XP to come. In all those 6 years, I have paid $0 for Windows or any other Windows program.
In Turkey, OEMs are not required to bundle the computers they sell with an OS. Most local shops here add WinXX to their configurations in their ads but you can always have them deduce it. Some of them even prefer to illegally install Windows on thier customers' PCs for a small fee. And this is not an occasional, it is a very common business practice.
What's probably more amazing is that there is a growing market in Turkey: Pirated Software. You can find and buy pirated software/digital media very easily in any of the larger cities of Turkey and not just Windows 98 or ME. You can find just about any version of any Microsoft product as well as games, movies, music CDs and even shareware for a few bucks! This business had a huge boom with the price drops in CD recorders. For example an "Ultimate Archive" CD I saw included two version of Win98 (Turkish and English) + Norton Internet Security + Norton Anti-Virus + Xing Mpeg Player and a few extra stuff I can't remember.
For legal purposes: I never buy or use pirated software, especially Microsoft products! Never ever!
But I digress... What I wanted to tell is most people in Turkey don't prefer Linux because it's free. In Turkey, for the common user, Windows is just about free, too.
PS: I am actually waiting for the Windows XP activation crack to come. Then I will consider upgrading to XP.
But a VERY good admin can run 4-5 nt servers, all your unix servers and maintain your business applications, databases and still have time to read SLASHDOT!
I have another question with this: If using this new "mouse" happens to be actually simpler, more comfortable and more useful, how come the new Mac users who start their lives behind a computer screen using this "mouse," ever be able to use an ordinary mouse? Just think of drivers who learned driving in an automatic geared car.. J
There is one great and really new concept with Napster: It created a music community that shares and is expanding it everyday [Its the users that are expanding the community but anyhow...] That is why "Nappy" is mostly talking about UI improvents so much, they are improving UI so that more people can use the program more easily and enjoyably.

Yes, that's true. But just because some government says I'm something/one/way does not mean that I am. Article 66 is very much in debate these days...
Please see the PS in the original message: "PS: ... but to hear so much disinformation in an unrelated topic gets on my nerves!"

I'd like to have a copy as well! A torrent would be even better.

I'm curious to see how an exploit can be made out of this. Is it possible to assign one of the virtual CPUs to a "sniffer" for a prolonged period?
and this seems like a joke.. A very stupid joke......
I got as far as page 3, and then Wham! Slashdot effect!.. Does anyone have a cache of page 4:

In Tom's review it also says that the mainboard temp. diagnostic cannot handle such fast increases of temp. Better read the article carefully...
Please let this be 1st post, please please pretty please!?!
