Not exactly. It still falls off as the square of the distance. All of the energy you want from the flashlight is going in the right direction, as opposed to every direction, so there's just "more" energy, which makes it look brighter.
Sorry, but this isn't exactly true. It's not hard for anyone over 6 feet 6 inches to break 200 lbs, no matter what the build. Ever heard of Robert Wadlow? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tallest_man
Yes, with the ugly space in there wiki will ask you if you want to search for prior art. If you're smart enough to replace spaces with underscores, you'll get there on the first try.
Yeah, I left mine updating last night as well. Everything but the proprietary nvidia drivers (which are borked by every distro upgrade) and compiz (which was borked by the lack of solid drivers) worked just fine.
I tried for a while (maybe 10 minutes or so) but it seems that the repo servers have melted, because adept won't talk to them. I'm on the torrent now downloading the CD, which will have all the necessary upgrade files.
Let's consider the average idiot: my mother. I switched her over from windows to linux a few years ago, but didn't tell her, and she didn't notice. I put a firefox and thunderbird icon on her desktop, installed whatever tax program she likes to use (which wasn't all that hard, but did take a fair bit of "linux knowledge"), and gave her her new computer.
Fastforward down the road, eventually she figured out that the big "K" in the corner wasn't the start button, and I explained to her what happened. She was amazed, because only months before I had asked her if she wanted to try linux, and she refused. Linux is easier for me to remotely administrate, and I don't have to deal with spyware. Now, I know not everyone has the privilege of tricking their users into using linux (and I'm not by any means saying it's the right thing to do), but it made my life a hell of a lot easier =)
Graduate students in engineering are usually paid to go to school, not the other way around (whether you're from the US or not). I don't know where you're going to school, but I'm going to come out ahead after undergrad... but I work =)
I don't really have anything to say other than KDE kicks ass, and it's great to see active development. It's certainly the most mature WM out there (IMO, of course), and it's cool that they're even planning to add some of the UI toys that the beryl/compcomm/compiz people have too =)
BTW, dolphins are mammals, and as such have hairs all over their bodies. So, unless you really can quickly shave an entire dolphin, you'd be better of pulling your trick on a non-mammal (blue whale, maybe?).
Is it only a question of time before Microsoft starts to compete directly with the likes of Dell and HP? Maybe. Although, how long after that until Microsoft stops issuing the "Windows XP/Vista ready" stickers to other OEMs and gets sued again?

Really? I thought it was because they put out an update every 6 months, which requires a reboot ;)
What about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prior Art ?

Ah, thanks.

Isn't Comcast a common carrier, which makes it illegal for them to spoof things on their network? Or am I just confused...

TFS: hardcore media hounds may still feel left out...
Amarok. There's nothing like it on any other platform.

Either that or someone at slashdot.org...
Yep.
My thoughts exactly. I want the smartest man for the job doing research, not someone who was selected because of their race or sex.
Why do that when I can buy two $250 drives and put them in a mirror RAID array? I'll probably get more storage, and it will last longer.

Will that be kind of like the legislation banning online gambling, or movie and music piracy?
No, but talking to your grandma about views alternative to whoever controls the NSA might be.

Of course! Your average /.er has lots of disposable income; mom pays all of the living expenses.
?ftw
I've never seen a night elf drinking a Coke.
