Combining an infinite series of light-switches will never produce conciousness.
I would like to see your proof of this. Because, combining a finite series of neurons apparently produces conciousness in humans. Have you or anyone else proved that neurons are more powerful than "light switches"?
By the way, we humans fool ourselves all the time...
Yeah, that's why I wrote this post, you probably didn't see it since it was just a minute before yours:)
Anyway, I don't understand why they'll need for a simulation like this. Will the virtual beings build a whole universe? Simulations aren't usually so slow. I found this page which probably has more interesting information, maybe I'll check it out later:)
Nevertheless, the researchers behind NEW-TIES hope to have seen some spectacular results by the time the project comes to an end in 2007. "It's incredibly ambitious, and it may be that, at the end of 3 years, we say we need at least another 30," Gilbert admits. "But it's worth a try."
Idiots... 30 years for a project like this? In 30 years we'll have much better methods of doing this, so any project started 3 years from now wouldn't be valid for so long. Those of you who have read Ray Kurzweil's essays probably know that there is a very good chance that we will pretty much understand how the human brain works by that time (like we understand the genome now).
Four of us, professional engineers, then spent the next hour debating whether or not it was cost effective for one of us to spend 5 seconds picking it up.
Apparently it would be cost effective. At least, it would be more probable that you would all shut up and work after you picked it up:P Typical of engineers:)
And I'm still amazed at what a 500MHz machine can do.
That's because software (and programming languages - java *cough* java) evolves in such a way as to eliminate the effect of the speed progress made on hardware:)
Either that or you didn't interpret correctly what they said - what Rockstar meant was that the MODDED code was not on the retail disc. The sex scene is, but it is unviewable, as in "dead code" which is never executed.
It wouldn't be very likely that beta-testing would catch something which requires binary files modification, wouldn't you agree?
My opinion is that people are worrying too much about this. It's not that any random kid will get a porn show thrown at their face out of nothing. They have to install the mod, etc.
About the press release, as another poster said, it's very carefully worded and doesn't say any lies if you read it closely. It may be misleading but I think they'll get away with it, and I really hope they do. The US needs to focus more on morals and less on stupid moralisms.
No, you're not thinking badly at all, in my opinion. Which obviously leads to the question - will microsoft try to obfuscate/encrypt/whatever those informations on the next IE version in order to make it difficult for other browsers to import it?

Sorry, I meant to say that we have mapped the genome, since that's what we have accomplished so far.

Don't tell, me you fell for it.
No, you I didn't fell for it...
No they don't. Do you even know what kinds of people fall for this? It isn't always greed.
I wouldn't execute it, since I have no idea :)
Nice, using your sig to "edit" a post :) Now you'll probably edit it again to make me look like an idiot ;)
can you say "Urban Legend?"
Yes (there are better references on this but I couldn't locate them...)

I guess it's funny even for who doesn't know Monty Python :)
Someone should spoil their party and organize a public GTA-like game in the same day :)
:)

Apparently, not as hard as understanding what a rhetorical question is :)

That won't do then.
So responsibility lies with Rockstar that made that content (as a joke probably) and knowingly left it in.
Has this been proved?
I'm not gonna say what your post made me think :P

Now before all you AC's come whining about karma whoring - my karma is already at excellent so spare those comments...
Of course they can, they would probably learn enough about php in a single day in order to make some moderately complex scripts.
At least it isn't a waste of time like your post is. And this one too.
