  1. Charter schools are public schools on Tech Billionaire-Backed Charter School Under Fire In Chicago · · Score: 1

I'm not sure why people think charter schools are private ... they are public schools that have been given control over various aspects of school life (teaching philosophies, structure, etc.). They are part of the local public school district, and many (if not most) of the teachers are members of the union. Charter schools receive funding from the public school pool but also raise money on their own (as do most public schools for special events, etc.).

The judgment is a big victory for MySpace, although service providers often have a tough time collecting such awards. So if the money is never collected, what would deter other spammers from continuing to spam people? These guys didn't even show up in court!
  4. Re:Fucking whiners. on Is the Internet Bad For Professional Writers · · Score: 4, Interesting

In June, I attended Book Expo America in New York. This is billed as the largest book-publishing event in the U.S., with many other countries sending representatives as well. Besides the thousands of booths, there are a number of seminars and talks about various things dealing with the industry. It seemed to me that one out of every four mini-conferences dealt with whether or not book publishing would be hurt by the Internet. I agree with many of the posters here that say good writers won't be hurt, but bad writers will be. I admit that I don't know a ton about the book publishing industry, but seeing how it works (I published a book two years ago, and I'm working on my second one now), it's pretty ridiculous how some things get mass-produced, while others aren't considered at all. From what I gather, most old-school publishing people are scared by the Internet. Many new authors are not, however, which leads me to believe that eventually, like most industries, a new way will replace the old. It's amazing to me how few authors have any web presence whatsoever. Explaining reciprocal links to some authors is painful. To me, it's not just a matter of being a good or bad writer. It's also about having the drive to market yourself in the proper way and get your name out. You can dispute whether or not John Grisham is a good author. But the man reportedly sold books from his car trunk to find an audience. That's separate from writing.

I wrote a novel about a small web organization "in bed" with the government, mining data from the Census Bureau as well. But did I take it seriously? Hell no ... there's even a Richard Simmons character in the book. He brightens all Big Brother plot lines!

It seems to me that if you are still concentrating on what is being said, you could respond with something generic like, "That's fascinating. Tell me more." That way, you are buying time to articulate an actual response to what is being said.

It seems to me that thinking about what other people think about you -- and what other people think about, in general -- could bring about more information and intelligence.
