  1. Re:Most of us don't have money for a RAID on Online Music Stores Compared · · Score: 1

What did you do when you bought CD's and they were stolen, or they fell out of your car and got all scratched up? I'm sure you didn't complain that FYE didn't give you new ones. Cripes every computer made in the last 6 years has a cd burner. Drag all your music to a playlist, set it to burn data cds, click burn, and feed it new cds when needed. A spindle of 50 cds goes for what, $10? You don't need $100/hr consultant for that. Seriously, back up your data. If you think the pain is bad when your music goes, wait till several years worth of photos are gone.

  2. Re:Stuck, huh? on Online Music Stores Compared · · Score: 4, Insightful

I can't wrap my mind around the subscription concept. I have a ton of music allready, and add maybe an album a month. I just can't see paying for the same music over and over again for the rest of my life. $4.99 a month sounds good, but for how long? The price will definitely creep up over time. Right now, if I am in a money crunch, I simply don't buy new music. WIth a subscription, I stop paying, and I lose everything.
As for iTunes DRM...I simply burn it all to a music cd for archiving purposes. I can't say I've ever run into Fairplay's limitations, which are pretty damn liberal.

  3. Too expensive? on Behind The Development Of The iPod nano · · Score: 5, Informative

I really don't get why everyone is saying the nano is too pricey. A 4GB flashdrive goes for $250-300 on Froogle (I'm sure there's some geekier place to check, but whatever). So basically with the nano you pay for the flash memory, and get the music part free. I also see a lot of complaining that the nano is worse than the mini because it doesn't have the same GB/$ ratio. I know it's unnerdy and wrong, but I would rather have the nano, which I can wear on a lanyard, and the durability of the flash over the hard drive. I'm seriously thinking of selling my 3G 20GB and picking one of these up.

"assault weapons" as defined in the ban are NOT machine guns. They are semi-automatic (meaning ONE bullet fires with each pull of the trigger). They are defined as assault weapons because they have a folding stock, or a bayonet holder, etc. Bascially things that make them look scary. It bears repeating, since people just don't get it, that these are NOT machine guns.

I switched to a Mac a couple years ago, and its handling of applications astounded me. Why can I just drag and drop an application onto my hard drive and have it work? Even better is uninstalling it, which involves just trashing the app. Why hasn't Linux or Windows implemented something like this (maybe Linux can, I don't use it enough to know)? I'm not trying to fan some flamewar, I just don't understand why it works so well, but noone else seems to have implemented it.

It's not just Windows update either, it seems like just about every program is guilty of this on Windows. This doesn't seem to happen to me as much in OS X, I don't know whether programs/OS just behave better, or there just aren't as many pop up windows. Actually I think it is the former, because I have software update set to come up once a day to check for updates, and it loads in the background.

This has to be one of my biggest pet peeves. Why do programmers feel the need to pop windows up right in front of my face, and always when I'm typing? Nothing should ever interrupt my focus, put a window in the background or on the toolbar, but NEVER interrupt my typing.

I did that for years as a kid, I always kept a blank tape in my stereo, and hit the record button when a good song came on. As far as I'm concerned I really use bittorrent as a glorified VCR that I don't have to program and that doesn't eat my tapes.

I watched every episode off of bittorrent. Friday nights at 10 is quite possibly the worst time ever for me to try and see a show. I downloaded the shows and watched them when convenient. I pay for cable and get sci-fi so I don't see how anyone could reasonably consider it stealing.

Uh, EVERYONE has a dvd player now, who cares. Nobody bought an xbox for watching DVD's (not to mention the required 50$ remote) I don't know a single non-gamer (the majority of my friends) who watches dvd's on their xbox or ps2. I was in the market for a DVD player, since I didn't have one. I bought an xbox because I figured I might as well be able to play games too (the remote was no where near $50, try $15). I got the Xbox over the PS2 because every single item I bought from sony in the last 5 years turned out to be a piece of crap which broke (including the 60 19in LCD monitors at work. Sony's response to their problems.."your electricity isn't very good, it's not our fault". Oh ok, its good enough for delicate scientific equipment, but not good enough for your monitors? No it doesn't, however the techs at the store don't pull it apart and inspect it. Let it dry and take it back saying it doesn't work, they will confirm it's dead, and you will most likely walk out with a new one. If the damage is obvious, like a smashed screen or if it's dripping water, then you're SOL. If it looks fine on the outside you're probably OK. I've known a bunch of people who've returned them for reasons like this (dropped on the ground, washed, dried, etc).

He took it to the Apple store, they gave him a new/refurb (not sure which). As long as there is not obvious physical damage and it's within warranty, then it should be no problem.
