I really have no respect for people who "don't want to learn anything new". Really, your whole life you are learning new things. New interfaces evolve and change, usually for the better in the long run. Spend a little time now, and you will end up saving time. If you are so lazy that you go out of your way to avoid learning new things, then you are pretty useless.

I don't understand how being cheaper is overpriced? The last album I bought was $9.90 (Motorhead's Kiss of Death). In FYE it's going for close to $20, more reasonable stores $15. I burn an audio cd first thing, data cd at my next backup. I suppose you could argue the bitrate's too low, but I honestly doubt Motorhead sounds any different at 320kps.

I'll just go with this: It has to do with SELFISHNESS. Trying to block out a loud, and abused world. Temporary distractions for yourself instead of using the and time recording your library for something better. I've got nothing wrong with music. It's when you see $1000 of equipment hanging off of 20 people (iPod, Cellphone, PSP for example). There's something wrong there. $20,000.00. What should people be focused on while riding the bus wasn't the point.
Why is it wrong? Some /.ers spend hundreds a year on the latest video card to get 3fps more in WOW. Some instead (like myself) listen to a lot of music, and do a lot of that listening on the bus. When I'm stuck on a bus that smells like a urinal, surrounded by freaks of nature, you're damn right I am going to try and isolate myself. Why is that so selfish?

Trading happiness in your twenties/thirties for freedom in your fifties/sixties is hardly a good trade. The whole "work hard while young so you don't have to work anymore" idea is a great way of getting people to trade in their youthful energy for a few extra bucks. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the monopoly kings thought that up.

Isn't this attitude the cause of most of the problems people have when they reach late twenties/early thirties? They spend the first decade out of high school 'having fun', parties, cars they can't afford, no concern of saving money...then they wake up and realize they are in massive credit card debt, have no money to buy a house, and realize they actually have to retire someday and will need money.

It's not that people aren't here to support it, but because everyone seems to be taught to treat public transit like a disease they want nothing to do with and that they need to have their own car.

The reason we treat it like a disease is because the busses are freaking disgusting. I park in a lot outside the city where I work, and take a bus in. The bus always smells like pee. There are days when the stink is so thick that it feels like I am sitting in a urinal. It's freaking vile, and if there was any parking in the city I wouldn't take this bus. Then there's the joy of bus drivers who are completely incapable of reading a schedule, who sometimes don't show up at scheduled pick up times. When I leave work early for an appointment, I make sure to leave two pickups earlier than I need to. I've missed doctor's visits so many times because the bus driver just couldn't be bothered to show up. Yeah, can't see why no one wants to take the bus.

Neat... although, if this works, it will totally kill the Hollywood "asteroid catastrophe" genre. The concept of sitting a giant hunk of metal next to an asteroid for 20 years to gradually shift its path doesn't exactly make for fast-paced, high-tension action movie

Have you considered searching for a second-hand or generic remote that will do the job?

Nope, VCR works good enough for me. I have a generic remote which I use to turn it on and off, volume and so forth, but the TV itself doesn't tune in more than a handful of channels. I'm with with this setup till the TV finally dies.

  20. I still use ny VCR on TiVo Buries the VCR · · Score: 1

Primarily as a way of changing channels. My TV is one I found in my parents basement 6 years ago when I moved out. It has no remote, and by itself only handles the first 30 channels. It also has coaxial as its only input, so I have to run my XBox through the VCR as well. I almost never use it for recording, though it still plays my old VHS tapes when the need arises. Recently my wife dug out her copy of Ice Pirates, which she recorded off TV when she was really young (say early 80s). The quality was atrocious! I never realized how much tapes degraded. Most of the time I had to squint at the screen and go 'what the hell is going on'.

  21. Re:Stuck, huh? on Online Music Stores Compared · · Score: 1

Most of those are on CDs I have purchased over the years. Also, $.99 a song would be true if I bought them one at a time. Buying albums at $9.99 makes the songs less than $.99. For example, I just bought the Goblin release Nonhosonno for $9.99. That is 14 songs, which makes them about $.71. The math pricing people throw around here is really inaccurate and makes lots of assumptions

All my iTunes music is likewise backed up onto music CDs. My relatives can certainly pick them up when I die. You are also making a big assumption that Yahoo is going to stay $4.99 a month for a long while. In any event, I certainly don't care how people get music. I'm sure some will love the subscription model, but it is definitely not for me.

Yes it is a problem. If I don't want to spend money now, then I don't. I still have my 5000 songs to listen to and enjoy. When I need to save money and cancel my subscription, I have nothing at all, except maybe the radio. To me that is a big difference.

Yes the audiophiles will hate me saying this, but I honestly can't tell the difference between 128k and higher.

  24. Re:Stuck, huh? on Online Music Stores Compared · · Score: 1

So, what's stopping you from burning a CD from a subscription service?
I was under the impression that in order to burn a CD, you had to pay a fee ($.99 or whatever it is) per song. That fee is in addition to the monthly rate. I'm sure you could capture the audio from your soundcard and save that and burn it, but that's pretty slow, as you have to capture it in realtime (I think, maybe there's more advanced stuff than Audio Hijack now).

I don't get on my knees at every new Apple product and think our Lord God for it.

This has nothing to do with Apple, it's about you not wanting to take responsibility for your own property. Digital media has a significant advantage in that you can make perfect copies and store them somewhere safe in case of accident. You should use that advantage. In the time you have been complaining on Slashdot, you could be well on your way to being done with a backup.
