They have this weird "pledge of allegiance" thing they do at school every day to brainwash the kids into a kind of belief system. It's all a bit North Korea - you can search for it on YouTube or such like, and watch with incredulity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuZB1CsRwd0
Well said. Going back to the original article, in the UK it's a crime to publish these kinds of "hateful views" if a court deems that it might "stir up hostility". So the crime is not the thought, but the publication and the intention of the author in so doing. I'd like to see a test case where a racist only published to other racists. Surely then he would not be stirring up hatred since it already existed in the first place? Maybe the secret is to add a front door to the site requiring the reader to confirm he or she is already a racist and is unlikely to be stirred by reading the article?
The name of the role would depend upon the application to which you apply your HTML. Some people use HTML to make pretty pages (web designers, web artists) whereas others are cleanly displaying useful data (information architects) or help with device-independent data access (iPod sitesmiths). Still others like to write most of the app on the client-side by interweaving HTML with jQuery JavaScript and suchlike (web developers). Etc...
Java is open source software. If Oracle likes it that much, it can do a "Red Hat" and simply shadow or fork it with its own dev team. It might do a better job too. Surely that's cheaper than the $7bn or so it would cost to buy Sun with its workforce of 30,000 people. (Oracle's workforce is 86,600 people, so that would add 35% to the headcount!)
Apart from InnoDB, Oracle doesn't really have a history of open source involvement. I just can't see Sun the company being attractive to Oracle (but MySQL, the database sure would be). Just my 2c. I hold put options on JAVA shares and am waiting to cash them in the next month or so.
Twitter could just provide its own www.tinyurl.com service. That way the links only rot if Twitter rots, and it places the solution right next to the requirement. Simple.
Despite the changes in copy semantics from PHP4 to PHP5, most code written for PHP4 runs fine as PHP5. If changes are necessary, they are very minor since PHP5 mostly adds new capabilities (apart from the pass-by-reference stuff). If the coder was using "&" before in his PHP4 code, then it will work fine without changes in PHP5. The bigger question for me is whether the excellent www.cakePHP.org framework will continue to support PHP4 now it's deprecated.
Ask Jean-Frederic - he's an excellent psychotherapist who can help any geek to understand his libertarian leanings, and many other aspects of the mind - beautiful or not. I speculate libertarianism may be connected to a logical rebellion (rather than emotional) against maternal dominance early in life, but I guess it's different for everyone. It might be connected to a problem with emotional communication - that's the case for me anyhow. It's also hard to feel a general connectedness with non-geeks - and the geek world does give us huge liberty. Just my 2c.
Take a look at Xara Xtreme - it's much cheaper than Adobe, with great features and a clean usable interface. From the web site:
The ability to produce CMYK color separations has been re-introduced to Xtreme Pro. This includes on-screen preview of CMYK and spot color plates, PANTONE® color support, spot colors, on-screen printer gamut preview and a lot more. Xtreme is now able to produce professional CMYK print results either via PDF/X support or via direct 4 color and spot-color separation via the print dialog.
Both options include crop and printer's marks. The direct separations printing includes control over print screening and screen types, emulsion side down and other advanced settings.
Absolutely. I was about to post the same message about avoiding the site for all those Google Adwords boxes, etc. I'm not great at cynicism, but it almost appears like a cunning ploy to deliver 1000's of Slashdot eyeballs at geeky Google Adwords ads and make a tidy sum on a Sunday morning? Hmmm...
Come on Slashdot - this is not news for 99.9999% of us, since they are only producing 800 keyboards by Jan 2008 (according to TFA). Feed me something tasty and available, like Oreo cookies...
Sun and IBM are not collaborating on this. Sun is using its Darkstar gaming server to deliver Menlo Park 2.0. IBM is using a private island in Second Life. No connection - just a similar initiative.
From my experience, Google Apps is way more reliable than a home server - plus you can easily access your apps from home, work, vacation, etc. I run a home server at zicatela.net and have to call home when the cleaner "accidentally" unplugs it and I lose my site, iTunes, etc.
Personally I believe the distinction between client and server will blur in the future, and that projects such as Sun's Celeste will grow P2P services from today's server-centric approach.
Thanks - I thought the story was just a bit more SCO-hate from the Linux luvvies - but I was wrong. Maybe its time SCO sold their claimed Unix trademarks and copyright in order to fund a share buy-back, and hence keep the bid price above $1. Hard times in Salt Lake eh?
So where's your link to a story backing up you NASDAQ delisting claim for SCO? Sure, it's plausible, but where's the link it sounds speculative.

This novel method of power distribution may occur inside or outside of the server cabinet, allowing for the flexibility to provide DC power to either a single cabinet or entire row of cabinets populated with systems..."
Exactly! This is simply: Somebody is saying something nasty about me and I want them to answer some questions in court. How banal. Let SCOX slowly slide into bankruptcy as it tries to pay Novell's UNIX fees.
I just got a Sony Vaio with an NVidia card. I added the optional NVidia drivers and it works really well with Xgl snazzy 3D effects. So if Vista's not working for you, give SLED 10 a go maybe? Or if you've got lots of time and anger, try the legal route instead...
Bored of your laptop "just working"? Try Linux. You'll find your masochist side awakens with inane challenges such as trying to find a way to control the screen brightness on a Sony Vaio (yes I found spicctrl, but it doens't work on my SLED 10 distro). Then try upgrading to Firefox 2.0 to discover your add-ons don't add on. (Sorry to spoil the fun for those pain-seekers, but you need to delete your ~/.mozilla/firefox/.../extensions.rdf file - <sarcasm>of course!</sarcasm>). Now let's set the pain level up a notch and start playing with your graphics driver to get those snazzy Xgl effects working. Do I hear someone whispering SaX2 to get that X display back up again? And now you're hooked...
If this short teaser has got your masochist taste buds watering, Linux is for you! Feel the pain!!
