Well, right now I am writing at my laptop (with a LCD) and at work I have a CRT...
I get very tired after looking the CRT monitor for 1 or 2 hours, and after I leave the work I always end with my eyes itching and kind of irritated.
While, with my LCD monitor I can stay 5 or 6 hours straight without eye strain. Sure, I am not a hardcore gamer or anything similar. But I surely use PC to read a lot (PDF's) and after you try to read a 70 page article from a CRT you will understand why LCD's are better (for me)
man, but if you are suppose to be "pirating" movies/software for not paying for them WTF is the treat when you have to "pay" to get into the newsgroups?
When I use emule, bittorrent etc, I do not have to pay anyone (other than my internet provider)... so what is the case?
So you do not have any questions, and surely you never asked your professors any stupid question noooo, you absolutely know everything.
You must be really intelligent, for someone that knows everything and only makes "intelligent" questions ooo wow let me worship you Mr. Intelligent.
Well, let me disappoint you, you have made a lot of "stupid" questions in your life... more than you know and if you have not then you are a stupid person because you do not know the answer to all those stupid questions...
So what? even a link to the wikipedia article would be okey for him, instead of bashing him, and you would even get mod points, but nooooo... he is a stupid because he does not know something, and he do not want to search for it, there is nothing wrong in asking you know? If you think it is stupid then do not answer it, there are others (as you can see in the replies) that are willing to HELP other people and it does not cost anything...
yeah, and also all those reports are not taking into account the servers already running, there are comapines that have propietary Unix servers on and working and are not planning to replace them with Linux or Windows because they work just fine.
I wont post anonymous although I will be moded down.
But, Why TF did the mods moded parent redundant?? Not everyone knows what Skype is, and if no one asks then everyone will just write stupid comments.
So, the bastard mod that moded parent down surely was the one that laughed when some of their school pals asked questions to the teacher no? and surely he is so fucking ignorant because he didnt asked anything.
So if you want mods mod me fucking down but parent is a REAL QUESTION!! it really pisses off. He is just asking for a QUICK EXPLANIATION just a simple comment to know what it is!!!..
This is a big bonus for home users and those who don't know how or don't want to play with the settings on their router.
Not only that, I have found very useful the Skype service because I am living inside my University accommodation halls, and although we hav broadband connection it is a LAN hence we have a NAT and are also firewalled (it is even not possible to see our LAN neighbors!, quite paranoic no?).
So as I live far away from my home, when I want to call my parents or some other friends I can not use MSN Messenger voice/video features. I have used skypeout and it is really great! (I have to make long distance calls to my home country).
I have not tried this video plugin, but you can be sure, today I WILL do it!
Microsoft has a large group, which has been working on machine translation since early 90's.
Sure but, by the way MS works they will wait until Google or any other one use the translation technology as direct competition in order to start really using that "large group".
This is why MS has not entered the translation market, since only Systrans and other minor dictionaries are available and they have this small market, but if Google or Yahoo or even Apple started using this technology to give an Added Value, I am sure Microsoft would start to do something
yep, and it is also better when it is a big package/dir.
I remember trying to download a DVD (no not copyrighted) with 2 sides, it was 1 torrent but there where 2 persons with 1 "side" of the torrent each one, so although no one was seeding the torrent was complete and it was better for them to "seed" the file (may count as something like distributed seeding).

But I think it does not matter, when I make a program I DECIDE which platform to support, and I am targeting the market of that platform. It is like, Google Desktop Search, which only works for Windows (does it works on Win98 or ME??) and does not work for Linux, BSD and other platforms.
Yeah I know Windows 2K is "similar" to Windows XP, but at the end of the day it IS another product.
It is like trying to blame any software developer company because their applications do not run in systems from Win 3.0 to WinME!!
It is called "Minimum System Requirements" (Hardware and Software requirments)
Well, I think there will be a workaround for that, you see, current Gaming console generation conoles have some kind of protection, this protection was a HARDWARE protecion. It does not matter anymore, you can install Linux on the Xbox, so if the things get really bad in the future who knows, we will get a Matrix chip for the DELL.
Man, if there are 1 or 2 groups that make those chips "for profit", just imagine the market for those kind of chips for the more broadlu used PC's =o).
Do not worry, seriously, anarchy will always triumph.
A descent text editor: have you tried Notepad 2 for me it has worked wonders, as I was looking for a text editor as fast as notepad with more features but not as bloated as JEdit or UltraEdit (this last is not free).
Descent media player, have you tried VCL? personally I think MS Media player is quite good, as I can play almost everything on it, but of course as it is from Microsoft it surely is crap for you so, VLC will do it.
Decent Clipboard viewer, this (clipbrd) page might be useful for you and guess what, you have to TYPE the command to use it, so you wont miss the Linux way.
And what do you mean by "unsupported"?? unsupported by who? by the operating system? those apps are not more supported by Linux than by Linux, in both OS they have the exactly same licenses. In none of them can you call the OS company representatives to help you using them (as both of them will tell you to RTF-Forums-FAQs, etc).
And the Gimp is equally FULLY SUPPORTED in Windowze, I can see you are just flamebaiting... ask the people who made the Gimp how much "more" they support The Gimp for windows and for Linux... WTF are you barfing about?... I do not know why am I answering to your comment...
Dont worry, he was just flamebaiting you, I DO have a Laptop (HP ZV5000) and I tried installing several Linux distros and as you said, there is always something that is not supported yet, AND something that is supported just after you spend 80 hours getting the source code, compiling, changing.conf files and similar things...
I have NEVER seen a laptop with Linux at his 100% use. Nope, never. But of course I have read/heard a lot of comments as the GP, he, or a friend of him had bought a laptop and just after inserting the disk, Linux installed almost by itself detected everything...
No, that is not true, until I can see one Laptop (a descent one, not a Pentium 200Mhz old one) with ALL the hardware running and USEFUL (care to tell me how can I use my webcam (if it can be used by Linux) and microphone to have a real time audio/video conversation with others via MSN messenger?); until then they can tell me how many notebooks they have seen flying with Linux but for me that is just shaegahnians.
Just some comments. I think the comparisons are a little bit biased.
For example, in the Calculator comparison, while the Linux ones are on scientific mode, it seems they didnt wanted to show that the Windows calc can also do it.
In the Instant Messenger comparision, what about opening a messenger windows (in the Windows version) and starting a video or audio conversation, and comparing it to the others (mmm I do not think it is possible to have an audio or video conversation with gaim).
The paint program comparison... WTF! comparing paintbrush with The Gimp?? if you tell me that it is because the Gimp is part of the OS, let me tell you that it is NOT, and you CAN install it on Windows too, so no, there is no point comparing them! that was the most biased comparison for me.
I know that the idea of making these comparisons is cool, but, again I would like to see them made by a non biased source, this seems a bit biased.
I do not want to deffend Windows, as I like Linux (I run Ubuntu in my house PC) but if we cry when we see those TCO studies that Microsoft pays... ok we can not make the same mistake.
P.d... so loooooooong (karma falling down to the bottom of the abyss...)
I would like to have a review of these software where they told me what they can NOT do.
It would be nice to see, for example, that Evolution or Thunderbird can NOT sync with some PDA's, and that Outlook do NOT have a learning anti SPAM algorithm, and all that.
You know, I think it is great, when comparing things to see all the bad side of them, or the features they do not have, that way you would be able to make a chose based thinking like "ok, so this software do not have all this, but I think these characteristics it has is enough for me to use it".
And it goes also for OS (Windows, OSX, Linux, *BSD), Office suites (OOo, MSOffice, WordPerfect,...), Web browsers (Opera, Firefox, IE, even Lynx!).
As an example, I have read about 2 subjects, the first one was about a PhD, so I searched for information about "how to succesfully make a PhD", and of course I found a lot of tips etc, but almost all the pages where telling the same, but one friend of mine showed me a document that had this other approach "how NOT to make a PhD", and it was really useful, and funny.
The other example was with something quite similar, about publishing a paper, so if you look about "how to publish a paper" you will find tons and tons of information from the different publishing houses about the guidelines, in some other places you will find tips of how to "write" etc. But if you search something like "how NOT to publish a paper" you certainly find (I did) nice documents that with sarcasm, will tell you everything you need to do to get your paper rejected.
I know, it is not a usual way to see things, but I think it gives you more information that you wont have with the usual reviews.
A young man goes into a computer games shop. He says to an assistant "I want a challenging computer game with lots of graphics. It should be difficult, confusing and have plenty of contradictions to keep me busy".
The assistant replies "Have you tried Windows XP?"
I didnt read TFA but I think you are 100% right. One thing I do not like when MS talks about TCO costs of switching to Linux is that they sometimes see it fromt he perspective of switching FROM Windows. So, of course they will have to spend money in training the people (or hire skillful technicians).
But I think they should compare it in a fare way, if a company with NO IT infraestructure at all would need to chose, then they would have to pay the costs involved in training, technicians and for windows they will also have to pay the software licenses. And there is when the numbers wont that low for MS products.
No stupid, I am trying to convince you that the solution to viloence is not violence, that you will not fix the hijackings, yong people shooting their school parterns, drugs, gang fights etc by giving each a gun to each person and allowing them to kill whoever the hell they think is looking them bad.
The solution is to go to the ROOT of the problems whichever they are. But I guess your tiny mind cant let you see that?, I would like to be able to post images so I can show you with oranges and apples... maybe then you would understand.
Ok, I did not wanted to reply because all of the replies to my comment that say something similar to yours are made by Anonymous Cowards, but I think yours is the most "neutral" and not trollish I could find.
I know that in Mexico there are problems, and there IS crime as in all the countires, I know that in the North zones (specially the ones near the border) are very dangerous.
The point I was trying to do in my comment is the approach that we are [trying to] take in order to fight this, while people form the US (read the parent of my first porst) thinks that the solution to the robbers, assaults, plane hijacking and all that is to arm the society, in Mexico (and a lot of other countries) the people wants to fight the root of the problem. As I stated before Mexico's main problem is the poverty, that is why there is a lot of unemployment and a lot of that unemployed people goes to the north and tries to get into the US and the ones that do not get there sometimes stays in Tijuana or any other border city and gets in to the crime.
That is our problem, but the way to solve it (as we see it, and our goverment sees it too) is to attack the poverty. We have more problems (corruption, drugs, etc) and some of them, people want to fix them but the goverment does not care (as in Corrupt goverment which is a BIIIG prbolem in Mexico). But, the People want to solve it, and not by shooting the others.
In the case of the US, you have other problems which result in juniors shooting people in the street just because they find it fun, people getting into the houses and murdering just to get something, gangs fights (blacks vs whites vs latinos vs chinesse vs whatever), with this last I am sure a lot of people from the US would blame the different races, but I think the US is by itself a mix of all the races, and not only the white-yellow hairy-Irish descendent - Americans.
The thing is that, for some people in US the solution to those problems (and maybe others) is to give a weapon to everyone so they can defend themselves, instead of trying to fix the roots of the problems (or making the goverment fix them).
Now, after reading the replies and writing the post I have come to a [kind of] conclusion, maybe it is difficult and even impossible for you to understand this 'way' of solving things, because we are two different cultures, maybe people from Finland would think in another way, it is like if I tried to compare the corruption on Finland with the corruption in Mexico, people wont be corrupt there just because "It is something that CAN NOT be done", it does not matter, for their mind is not factible or possible, not that they have great punishments etc, it is just cultural, and in that same way, for people in the US it is something from your culture the need of a weapon to feel safe to feel that you can shot whoever you think is attepmting to your integrity.
So, well, at the end that is one of the results of glovalisation, what TF do we, Mexicans care about what you US dou?, the same as you US care for what people in Iraq do, and the same to what people in the UK care for what we do... nothing (of course $ome countrie$ find intere$t$ controlling other countrie$ oil^H^H^H democracy.
But because of that, I think we wont be able to agree.
The thing is, INSTALLING it is easy, the hard think is to make all the hardware work.
I have an HP laptio (Pavilioin ZV5000) and I have tried several Linux distros, Mandr[ake/iva] (really easy to install) did not detected my external hard drive (it is a case to connect an internal HD to USB). Then I looked for help and everyone told me to try another disto.
I tried Ubuntu, and the sound did not worked, I entered the Ubuntu IRC channel and they told me that the ATI chipset was not jet supported.
Then I tried Fedora Core and the Sound wont work.
Now, in any of the 3 distros the Bluethooth worked, neither the Wifi, my touchpad is an ALPES with a kind of "scrool wheel". That was also not working in any of those distros.
One strange thing with Mandrake was that, when pluggin the headphones the speakers wont stop hearing. That was bad as usually when I put headphones is to prevent other people from hearing the music I am listenting.
I also have a webcam (Genius VideoCAM NB) that does not work with any distro.
Of course when I state "not work" with all these hardaware I mean "out of the box", I am sure there are some drivers tha can be installed via./configure;make;make install tar gz,.conf mangling, kernel recompiling. But, although I know I can do that, I do not have the will to lose my time in that to see that at the end something wont work at all, so I will return to Windows.
Of course this HP idea is good, I hope they will develop some drivers (or at least will ask the manufacturers to do it) for the notebooks componets, that way, some day I will be able to use 100% of my computer hardware with linux, meanwhile Microsoft Windows is doing the work really well.
thnks a lot

Of course this HP idea is good, I hope they will develop some drivers (or at least will ask the manufacturers to do it) for the notebooks componets, that way, some day I will be able to use 100% of my computer hardware with linux, meanwhile Microsoft Windows is doing the work really well.
