See the nice thing (for the RIAA cartel) is that, they dont care about *your* music taste because it is only a tiny statistical anomaly. The "famous" artists you see and hear about everywhere are the artist that the "average American" likes to play. Referring about the other poster who made the letter for the RIAA, he states that the only thing that plays on the radio are songs that he does not buy. But then again, that is because his listening tastes comprise a statistical anomaly in the eyes of the RIAA.
What will happen with internet radio is that, the stations that do not want to pay the RIAA will die. And then, you will start to see lots of stations that play the same shit that is played in every other place, which is what the majority of what your "Average American" likes to listen, which means that, it is what is going to leave the bucks to the RIAA.
So, at the end, the "Average American" is not going to take any kind of punishment because the music she likes to listen is what they will play in the majority of places.
It blows my head to think how can you people let those corporations do that... we (as non-americans) can not really do anything against them if you do not fight but shit, those corporations are yours and the "average american" seems to be so used to be screwed by the ass that they lost the repulsion and is even starting to like it... WAKE FUCKING UP!
Of course this will be resolved by downloading the illegal "enhanced" copy. I had to do this with my Windows XP. My notebook's hard disk went dead and as I am in UK and bought my machine in Mexico the people from HP told me they COULD NOT sent me a restore CD (the one that has Windows XP) even if I wished to pay them. The representative told me (actual quote):
Bob Xtracto, I am afraid to say that the recovery discs are not available in UK. Bob I am really sorry. Bob The only way is to purchase a retail version. Xtracto - But then what with the serial number ? Bob We can check the availability of the discs with the serail number in our database. Bob It is available only in mexico, where you've purchased the notebook. Xtracto - ooh alright, so I would need to buy it in Mexico Xtracto - Do I have to give you my XP serial number? Bob Yes, i am really sorry for the inconvenience. Bob No need for that, the only thing is HP doesn't ship the recovery discs world wide. Xtracto - well, nevermind. Xtracto - Thank you anway! Can you believe this shit? so what I did was to download the OUTSTANDING Windows Unatended Edition and I got mesmerized with it, it is 300% better than the standard windows Install...
Comparing that software (windowsue) against the standard windows XP, I laugh very loud when I read the companies warnings about downloading "illegal" copies saying they provide less functionality and they are dangerous and what not...
The same thing will happen win Vista, and that (WindowsUE and others) are the direct result of all the nags Microsoft (and other companies) keep adding to their software, and the restrictions (I completely and utterly REFUSE to pay £100 for a new retail copy of Windows...)
Don't get me wrong, I love Wikipedia - but I hope my doctor doesn't rely on it when prescribing medication. Dont know in USA, but in Mexico, doctors use something called Pharmaceutics Speciality Dictionary (or something similar) and the Mexico's University has it available for free .
Going on topic, The non availability of the research papers has always been frustrating for me. I am currently doing a PhD and fortunately my University has subscription to *lots* of journals and services like Scopus or eBrary. I understand why eBrary is not free (they offer complete books after all) but almost all of the research published in the scientific journals is made on Universities.
But, when I was doing my Bachellors degree (at my poorman's univesity somewhere in Mexico) I remember reading abstracts and some titles of some papers without having the chance to read them all. I think it is not fair. I remember somewhere I read a rant by Prof. Donald Knuth about the editorial monopolies happening in research (by elsevier and two or three others). For some journals the author even has to *pay* the journal to publish his work... that is crap.
Now, both my parents are researchers (biologists) and they told me that, if you are interested in some paper it is still possible to write to the author and ask for it directly, they will almost always agree to give it to you (at the end, you might potentially cite them on a paper). I have done that two or three times but some authors just refer you to the publication (in other words, they do not give it to you ).
I found your comment interesting. I am kind of the "inverse" of what yo are. I am 25 now and I completed the Bachellors degree in Software Engineering in 2002 (I was the first in my class with an average of 94 out of 100). I worked around 1 year on a web applications development company (ASP with.NET,,when it was just starting) and after that I worked something like another year in "real" software development implementing multi agent systems (Jade/Jadex), neural networks (CMAC) and some interfaces in C# and WinForms (with Cortona VRML plugin). On my free time I have always liked to program computer games and graphics (although I have always been a bit frustrated as I do not have ANY drawing skills). I have programmed in a bunch of languages and know about lots of technologies however.
In 2004 I decided to go for a PhD, I got a scholarship from my country's (Mexico) science council and started an Artificial Intelligence PhD in a UK university. Now I am in the middle of the PhD, I feel I am doing well (some publications and all that) but I am afraid of what is going to be of me after I finish. I love working on software, programming and I have the background on software engineering, unfortunately companies will always look for 10 years of job experience or more and I do not have that. I am quite worried as after finishing I would love to work in the UK or some other Europe country because if I return to Mexico I will not have a job... and I mean it. I will end programming TSQL+PHP/ASP or basically database software.
The problem is that to work in almost any country in Europe there is this Catch-22 in which you must get a job in order to get the work permit and in order to get the work permit you must have a job... but no company will touch your resume if you do not have a work permit...
Another problem I have (which I know it is my OWN fault) is that, some friends have told me that in the USA I am sure to find something but I *really* want to avoid going to the USA (I dont like their government politics...) and I guess that is cutting my possibilities.
Anyway, I hope you can find your end focus soon, I do not know if you have a family to maintain or some other obligations but I will suggest doing whatever you want to do soon! do not continue on that job if you dont like it... as a USA national you have a lot of advantages... Of course, one disadvantage (IMHO at least) is that Universities are *very* expensive there. I have thought after some time in the PhD to return to Mexico and study a Finance and Economics degree. As my research is a bit related to it I have been reading about it (basically finance) and find it very interesting.
I do not know about Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 but I have not played Wii for more than two weeks now, after I finished Red Steel. Because there are no fucking games available.
Have a look at the Wii VC, what games do you have? not too much games for your so called "Casual Gamer" uh?, Mario Bros an dother NES games were not for the casual gamer 15 years ago and are not now. I havent bought any of those games because they are too damn expensive [in UK at least] for what they are, I can play them in the PC anyways.
And, by looking at Japanese sales charts for the unbundled 'casual games', I see Wii Sports and Wii Play in the top ten weekly with the occasio I bought both of them, the one I play mostly is Wii Sports, but in order for it to be fun I need to play it with other people, something I cant do so often as I do not control the actions of my friends, and they are "Casual Gamer" meaning they will only play some weekends. Oh, and the fact that they must come to my house to play also makes it hard.
Wii play is crap. It would be a bit less crap/if/ it was for more than two player... The games are OK for 10 mintues but after that it is boring, and of course it makes no sense playing it alone.
So yeah, as the sibling poster said, please give us references for some of your claims. All I have is personal experience. You can read on each story where the Wii is bashed that some zealot is going to come to apologize saying that the Wii is this or the wii is that but hey, I bought into the hype and here I am.
I like my Wii (pun intended) I think it is cool, it is the only console I have as I cant afford the Ps3 or the Xbox2. So no, I am not a MS os Sony zealot. I am just a frstrated player. Right now the games I play are www.tacticsarena.com and Neverwinternights 1. On the PC of course. But from what I have read is available on Xbox Live, it really looks nice (for example the Worms game, which is a very good multiplayer game that I used to play with my girlfriend on the PC, the N64 version has IMHO the best controls setup (simple) comapred to the World party... for which you need to memorize the whole keyboard and has thousands of options).
About damn time? Oh my god. I wont rant about any of those properties being available on your un-favoruite *Nix distribution. But darn even Microsofts *OWN* operating system from 1986 had that, I am talking about the MSDOS 5.00 to 6.22. They had the Aborst,Retry,Ignore, Fail options.
Is the people that developed WinXP developing Gnome now? (as they tend to think that user friendliness means less usability).
I second that, I bought a YP-Z5 with 4GB. It is a small cute little piece of hardware that sounds very nice playing OGGS at Q3. Some people say that the [file] size does not matters now but I believe it does still matters for the portable music players. Of course I could always go for a player with more memory but that would mean buying a hard disk based player which has much much much less battery life time than my Samsung YPZ5 (the specs say 35 hours, my maximum has been 30 hours, quite good IMO).
You make it sound as if "Mexican jail" was some kind of nut-cracking factory. For your information (yes I am Mexican) due to the nature of Mexican corruption, lots of people in "Mexican Jails" live a really good life. Of course, I might think that your *fear* for the "Mexican Jail" comes from your knowledge of the unfair treatment of USAnians to Mexicans, and that given the circumstances of the prisoner, he might be object of physical aggression due to revenge.
WOW I say, USA _*IS*_ far worst than Canada. My Grandmother went on vacation to USA around the 1970s, twenty years after that, an Aunt went on vacations and just when she was returning (at a USA airport) they detained her *and* interrogated her (with the typical 'yo-muthafucka' Yanki bad ass mood) about my Grandmother. According to *their* records my Grandmother was *still* in the USA, as an Illegal and they in some way found (how much information can the USA gather about everyone?) that my aunt and her were related. So they didnt want to let her return on the basis the she knew where my Grandmother was "hiding" in the USA.
After dealing with those asses for more than 4 hours they let her return... some time after that talking with the family we came to realize that my Grandmother just did not returned some kind of piece of paper when she got out of USA.
How is that for a police state?
So fucking what, USA wants to get information from every passenger, hassle with eye scan, finger print scan and all other kinds of shit to every other country but they whine and cry when someone does not let REAL CRIMINALS (shoplifting, raping, whatever, they are convicted, they are criminals) into their countries. Cry me a river.
This reminded me of one of Moore's documentaries where he asks how many murders had there been in a Canadian city *in the border* with USA... the answer? just one... oh, and the criminal was a Yanki who crossed the border! YAY!
I agree. Prisons is an option that needs to be reserved for criminals who are a significant threat to society
You know what I find sad about USA prisons? It is that the fact that you go to prison is that the government wants to Lock you up to punish you for your crime and let you rot and be raped and god knows what. I have just read a report (from a digg.com link no less) about the number of male to male rapes on USA prisons. Thinking about this case in particular (the DoD guy), today he is an intelligent man with computer knowledge and some pretty good understanding of technology (maybe even cracking). If the guy gets over the USA prison, he will be so fucked up (the USA system will destroy his life) that when he gets out (if he does it) he might be an addict, killer, and a bunch of other more nasty things.
That is quite sad. Just to put a bit of contrast, in my country, "prisons" are not called "prisons", and their main focus is not just on locking out "bad guys", a prision is usually called CERESO (social readaptation centre) or CEFERESO (social federal readaptation centre) which aim to re adapt the "bad guys" in order to make them *useful* to the society.
I think that is one of the reason why in USA the death penalty is liked, because for them, bad people must be punished, they do not like to see the root of the problem (if someone steals food from others it means he was HUNGRY... no the solution is not to lock the thief but to see WHY was he hungry, maybe more jobs?). But that is the *normal* thinking of the USA government, as they proceed similarly with Terrorism (instead of thinking WHY does the "terrorists" hate us?) they just want to bomb the fuck out of them. Blah!
Of course, you might argue that even my "happy happy" country with their "CERESOs"is not really happy... fuck no, we are very fucked up with corruption and all the same if not more violent crimes than USA (I am talking about your south neighbors), but hell, one of the things I have learnt is that the first step to fix ones problems is to acknowledge you have that problem and then to attack the ROOT. Not the symptoms.
I feel pity for this guy, as I felt pity for the British guy who hacked the CIA and was extradited to the USA. Heck, they should jail them *in* their country. And you people from the USA what the fuck, wake up!. It will be so cool to see in ten years, when half of the world is dead and the other is in USA "prisons" because of your stupid fears.
I agree, back when I was in the university I used to perform my programming projects with 2 other friends, we usually fired Windows Messenger + application sharing (word, notepad and other things) to share some code and the like. I am talking about 2001 or 2002. It was great, at least for us. I think one of the "secrets" is that 1. All the members in the conversation *must* know how to touchtype (or at least write faaast). 2. All the members in the conversation *must* agree to write 1 paragraph with one idea per "message" I\n, hate\n, when\n, people\n, writes\n, one\n, word\n, and\n,press\n enter\n.
It started as a "cool" experiment (to test the "new technology") but it was so helpful that we used it trough the remaining University time. This all was on 56k dialup, and yeah it was fast enough for us.
I found the following snippet from the article quite amusing:
AT&T is willing to concede that software isn't patentable, if the Court will conclude that the things that software does - the methods and procedures and instructions that a processor carries out once software is installed - are patentable. They are more or less trying to say that the software per se is not patentable but the things that the software/does/ once it is executed in the computer (arguably, one could put the same code in a Mac OSX and it would do nothing). I find it a bit difficult (IANAL) to understand but one of the things that I believe is a wrong assumption is that they are treating the "golden disk" as a mold, when in the case of software the golden disk is equal to any of the other copies.
I agree with parent and GP. I got a Wii (preordered here at UK) and so far I've got Zelda, Red Steel, Monkey Ball, Wii Play, and Wii Sports. The last two are great for multiplayer (unfortunately Wii Play is just for 2 players, that was a letdown as I hunted for it for a lot of time). But so far, none of the available games really seem entertaining for me. As the GP said, almost all the games are "mini-games" based and I always end playing Wii Sports with my friends (non-gamers all of them).
I usually go to the stores to look for new games, but so far there is only Call of Duty, Wario Smooth moves (mini games... which I wont buy), and two or racing games. One of the games I have been thinking to buy is the "Metal Slug Anthology" game, has anyone tried it? is it worth it? I have played Metal Slug and I like it. Also, there is this pinball game, is it OK?.. and the new Rampage which it seems it sucks (and I wont play multiplayer so it might suck more).
So yeah basically as I do not like American Football I wont be buying the Madden game and I cant see lots of games I really want to buy....
btw, which of the WII racing games would people recommend (NFS, Excite Truck, 4x4 Monster or others)? I think the next game I'll get is a racing game (I am looking for a game with GOOD entertaining one player mode).
cause Linux was built in as Multi user OS, un-like Windows in which you have to be root to install un-related stuff which you can't even think of why it requires root permissions.
I have always had problems trying to install RPMs or DEBs on any linux distribution/without/ root access. It is just not possible. The only way to *try* to do it is to download the source code and configure it with the --prefix option in order to change the installation directory. But to do that you must have the headers and other files of for libraries that the program uses (and to install that you need to be root); in summary it is a mess.
There are one or two software developers who make their RPMs or DEBs able to be installed locally (although they are just a few *counted* cases).
The idea? In Windows it is also tricky to run new software as a standard user (download installer, open it with winrar or any other zip utility, extract content and click on exe file); as with Linux it might or might not work and it might not be easy for non-techy users.
So overall it is not a problem of the Operating system but a problem of the applications. The multiuser framework is there in Windows XP for every developer to use it however do not expect your program to be multi-user friendly if you keep attempting to save files in system32...
. I once counted three hundred or so security cameras on a trip around Liverpool but I never once suspected that we had it anywhere near this bad.
Hehe, I have lived here in Liverpool for almost 3 years and I can tell you that police MUST watch these crazy Scousers as they really are fucked up. No but in all seriousness, you do live in a terrible bigbrother-1984-esque country. People here live *in fear* of their government. I just read somewhere that the probability to be sentenced after committing a crime is about ~%22 compared to ~9% in USA and ~%1 in Mexico. But me and other Mexican friends have a great time laughing at the government advertisings about tax evasion, drinking and even the stupid TV-License (gosh, I have received tens of "this is the final advice, we are knocking down your door next time").
And just the other day I was telling an English friend that it would be nice to bring some tequila and sell it here. You should have seen his face, he when he told me "But that is illegal!", I think he wished not to be my friend (with the fear of being caught for being associated with a criminal).
Well, I do not have a lot of experience with PHP (only some typical unsecure LAMP tests) but after looking what they did with mysql_real_escape_string() and mysql_escape_string() I agree with GP. What kind of programming language is that? what the heck does REAL is supposed to mean?
I have programmed in PHP and C#/VB.NET for web forms (back when.NET was just out) and I can tell you that even there, the microsoft product was better than PHP. One of the things I dislike about PHP and I liked about the WebForms.NET approach is the separation of the interface with the functionality which allowed us to create a real multi tier application. I have not programmed "for real" web applications for some time but as far as I know it is not possible to do that sepparation with PHP.
I have been gladly surprised a few days ago by a Ubuntu installation I have in a P3-450Mhz where I installed it (found in the trash of a neighbour =o)). When I installed it *almost* everything went smoothly. However I had problems with the ethernet LAN card (no, not he wifi) because the interface seemed to go up for some seconds and then died. It turned to be that there were 2 drivers loaded in the kernel *for the same hardware*. That was stupid, but at the end it was just a matter of unloading the driver.
But that was not my pleasant surprise, the good thing happened after I bought a Canon Lide 20 scanner (a pretty nice piece of hardware for the £20) and, after connecting it to the USB port of the Ubuntu machine and starting thinking "ok, I will go to the forums and search for any information about the drivers to see where shall I download them..." I had a very pleasant surprise to see that the scanner *just worked* it was recognized and I could use it with Ubuntu's scanning program (sorry, I dont know the name, and that, i think is something better.... and no it was not the Gimp). This meant that the Operating system did not blocked my way in any way.
On the other side, when I plugged the scanner to my Windows XP (SP2 top notch bla blah) notebook, windows detected the "piece of plastic" plugged trough the USB, and then the "hardware installation wizard" appeared and asked me if I wanted to look on the internet for the drivers, after answering yes, Windows told me that it didn't have drivers and it could not do anything else with my piece of plastic. Crap... I needed the installation disk, but the problem is that the installation disk installs too much crap. And how can it be that, in the sucker-without-drivers-Linux OS I did not have any trouble and the top-notch-uber-cool-grandma-eXperIence-Windows could not recognize a simple scanner that has been out more than two years?
So yeah pretty much it depends on the hardware but if you see, a default Windows installation does not *provide* all the hardware drivers, just look at the list of available drivers when you try to install one (manually install device/select from a list/list all devices) and you will see whereas Linux supports a *huge* number of them *out of the box* (any standard Desktop aimed distro).
Honestly, the way Windows (and Linux to a large extent, though it's vendor base is significantly smaller than Windows) manages to interoperate with hundreds of thousands of different vendor's drivers is pretty impressive. It is impressive that Windows even *works* with the way drivers are done. Of course the Windows driver for my scanner is completely crap [stability wise] whereas the Linux driver is very stable... unfortunately with some other hardware there are lots of features that the linux drivers just do not have (like my Logitech webcam for notebooks deluxe ).
I was able to do this and *much more* with Microsoft operating systems. I was able to turn off the computer, open the CD-ROM drive and even play sounds remotely using utilities such as black orifice or sub-seven.
Just contributing my own experience but, for me Maxtor has been completely crap (I used them for the first and last time about 6 years ago) while Seagate have been really good. I bought a used 120GB Seagate cheapo from Ebay about 2 years ago and it is still spinning loveley. I have also just replaced my notebook notebook from-factory samsung drive (because of a SMART warning) with another seagate.
Because my 72 year old mother can, and does, install programs herself in Windows. If it requires anything more complex than "double click on setup.exe" or "double click on the program icon when you save it", you've lost her completely and I have to tunnel in to her machine or make a 125 mile drive.
The problem with current Windows installing system is that it is very difficult to upgrade software. At least, it depends on the software developers. If they have an update-friendly software it might be easy.
Just recently I downloaed XAMP and after playing a bit with it (on windows... dont know if linux has that) I started to think, but what do I have to do if I want to upgrade it? and it means you must re-install it again. And some of your data would be lost, some wont.
Thats the nice thing about deb's or rpm's (or YaST or Synaptic). They will *not only* upgrade your base OS but also every other software you have installed on your system.
I think what we are looking for is a *standard* to link into applications. Imagine a standard meta-file which describes most of the info of the application and when a user opens it in ANY linux distribution, the distribution would proceed to find it in the enabled repositories. This metafile could even include self-repositories the major application deployment systems (deb, rpm, tgz, etc) which the distribution would use depending on its own kind of management system.
That way your grandma will only have to click on the link and then click on "Yeah, install this POS on my computer" as she does in Windows. And, you will have the advantage of not having to hunt down to hunt down the updates for the application.
You should read TFA, no, not the one linked there but the one published by the researcher. it is available here. Of course you can only enter if you have a subscription OR your university has access to it. Mine has, and I took the time to take a look to the article :
"PPAR Y inhibitors reduce tubulin protein levels by a PPAR, PPAR and proteasome-independent mechanism, resulting in cell cycle arrest, apoptosis and reduced metastasis of colorectal carcinoma cells"
Measurement of metastasis in vivo
Male severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice, 6 weeks of age, were maintained in a specific pathogen-free environment. Experiments were performed according to the guidelines of Yokohama City University. At day 0, 2 106 HT-29 cells were injected into the spleen. After inoculation, the mice were randomized into 2 treatment groups (each with n = 6) and 1 control group (n = 6). Starting at day 1 and daily thereafter, T0070907 (1 or 5 mg/kg/day) or control (1% DMSO vehicle) was administered orally. These concentrations were chosen based on initial pilot experiments to detect morbidity based on T0070907 alone. At 1 or 5 mg/kg/day, no increased morbidity (based on grooming, activity and food intake) was noted in mice with or without injected tumor cells. Four weeks later, the number and size of metastatic lesions in the liver were determined. Tumor volume was calculated as previously described. and in the conclussion:
hese results demonstrate that treating CRC cell lines with high doses of PPAR inhibitors leads to disruption of microtubule function, alterations in cell morphology, cell migration, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. In addition, definitive antitumor effects are seen in vivo, after oral administration in a CRC mouse model. So yeah, they tested in mice and yeah it looks promising. Of course it might not be as "newsworthy" as media wants to make it look. Hundreds of similar articles can be obtained via scoups.com any day:)
Oh but watch out for Tits... OMG I said it!!!!!!!!!one!1
Is there a GOOD book on PHP "System Development"
on
PHP 5 in Practice
·
· Score: 1
I am so tired of the thousands and thousands of PHP "programming" books available. But I have not been able to find a really good PHP book that goes beyond just showing you the available syntax of PHP and instead describing different advanced and adequate (secure, crash-free, intelligent) way to do things. This is true for a lot of programming languages. I am looking for a book with "best practices" for the language in different areas. In the case of PHP it is quite trivial (compared to say, Java or C++) as the language scope is usually just databases (with some session logging information).
by EveryNickIsTaken (1054794) Alter Relationship Is it really that shocking that hardware manufacturers are interested in having drivers developed for free that would enable them to reach additional consumers?
Oh.. wait. It's Linux. So that means it's news. Yeah, right.
1. You must be new here.
2. As stated in the FFAQ: Q: This is a lame publicity stunt, Linux development has always been done this way.
A: Well, the NDA program that we have set up with The Linux Foundation is new. But yes, other than that, this is exactly how Linux kernel development has been done. But it is good to point out exactly how it all works for those who are not familiar with how it works.
The main idea is to let companies know that it is possible to release hardware specifications in an NDA-esque way to kernel developers *without* having to publish their/precious/ secrets. Chances are that, the secrets are not *within the code* but developers need to know about them to implement the drivers.
Yes and... no.

I found your comment interesting. I am kind of the "inverse" of what yo are. I am 25 now and I completed the Bachellors degree in Software Engineering in 2002 (I was the first in my class with an average of 94 out of 100). I worked around 1 year on a web applications development company (ASP with .NET, ,when it was just starting) and after that I worked something like another year in "real" software development implementing multi agent systems (Jade/Jadex), neural networks (CMAC) and some interfaces in C# and WinForms (with Cortona VRML plugin).
Wow, you want to push an agenda dont you?
/if/ it was for more than two player... The games are OK for 10 mintues but after that it is boring, and of course it makes no sense playing it alone.
And, by looking at Japanese sales charts for the unbundled 'casual games', I see Wii Sports and Wii Play in the top ten weekly with the occasio
I bought both of them, the one I play mostly is Wii Sports, but in order for it to be fun I need to play it with other people, something I cant do so often as I do not control the actions of my friends, and they are "Casual Gamer" meaning they will only play some weekends. Oh, and the fact that they must come to my house to play also makes it hard.
Wii play is crap. It would be a bit less crap
Of course I could always go for a player with more memory but that would mean buying a hard disk based player which has much much much less battery life time than my Samsung YPZ5 (the specs say 35 hours, my maximum has been 30 hours, quite good IMO).
looking at a long term in a Mexican jail (ouch).
You make it sound as if "Mexican jail" was some kind of nut-cracking factory. For your information (yes I am Mexican) due to the nature of Mexican corruption, lots of people in "Mexican Jails" live a really good life. Of course, I might think that your *fear* for the "Mexican Jail" comes from your knowledge of the unfair treatment of USAnians to Mexicans, and that given the circumstances of the prisoner, he might be object of physical aggression due to revenge.

causing immigration hassles worldwide."
YAY!
NMMDIDGAF.
Gosh, even Microsoft Excel for the mac is able to do more than the Windows Version
I think one of the "secrets" is that ,press\n enter\n.
1. All the members in the conversation *must* know how to touchtype (or at least write faaast).
2. All the members in the conversation *must* agree to write 1 paragraph with one idea per "message" I\n, hate\n, when\n, people\n, writes\n, one\n, word\n, and\n
It started as a "cool" experiment (to test the "new technology") but it was so helpful that we used it trough the remaining University time. This all was on 56k dialup, and yeah it was fast enough for us.
/without/ root access. It is just not possible. The only way to *try* to do it is to download the source code and configure it with the --prefix option in order to change the installation directory. But to do that you must have the headers and other files of for libraries that the program uses (and to install that you need to be root); in summary it is a mess.
I have always had problems trying to install RPMs or DEBs on any linux distribution
What kind of programming language is that? what the heck does REAL is supposed to mean?
.NET was just out) and I can tell you that even there, the microsoft product was better than PHP. One of the things I dislike about PHP and I liked about the WebForms .NET approach is the separation of the interface with the functionality which allowed us to create a real multi tier application. I have not programmed "for real" web applications for some time but as far as I know it is not possible to do that sepparation with PHP.
I have programmed in PHP and C#/VB.NET for web forms (back when
I have been gladly surprised a few days ago by a Ubuntu installation I have in a P3-450Mhz where I installed it (found in the trash of a neighbour =o)).
Gosh, this is nothing new...

"PPAR Y inhibitors reduce tubulin protein levels by a PPAR, PPAR and proteasome-independent mechanism, resulting in cell cycle arrest, apoptosis and reduced metastasis of colorectal carcinoma cells" Measurement of metastasis in vivo
Tumor volume was calculated as previously described. and in the conclussion: hese results demonstrate that treating CRC cell lines with high doses of PPAR inhibitors leads to disruption of microtubule function, alterations in cell morphology, cell migration, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. In addition, definitive antitumor effects are seen in vivo, after oral administration in a CRC mouse model. So yeah, they tested in mice and yeah it looks promising. Of course it might not be as "newsworthy" as media wants to make it look. Hundreds of similar articles can be obtained via scoups.com any day
Drinking? War? Drugs?
Do you have a problem with that...?
Oh but watch out for Tits... OMG I said it!!!!!!!!!one!1

/precious/ secrets. Chances are that, the secrets are not *within the code* but developers need to know about them to implement the drivers.
Is it really that shocking that hardware manufacturers are interested in having drivers developed for free that would enable them to reach additional consumers?
Oh.. wait. It's Linux. So that means it's news. Yeah, right.
1. You must be new here.
2. As stated in the FFAQ:
Q: This is a lame publicity stunt, Linux development has always been done this way.
A: Well, the NDA program that we have set up with The Linux Foundation is new. But yes, other than that, this is exactly how Linux kernel development has been done. But it is good to point out exactly how it all works for those who are not familiar with how it works.
The main idea is to let companies know that it is possible to release hardware specifications in an NDA-esque way to kernel developers *without* having to publish their
