Seriously, the only way a company will provide Linux on its desktops will be if there is a company like Redhat or Linspire backing it. I would really go for Linspire or Xandros, but it will really be a difficult time when the Luser that bought the computer buys his Logitech quickcam for notebooks deluxe and finds that it just does not work after connecting it and that she cant even use it to video-chat with his pals on Messenger or Skype.

I think that is a really BIG problem with the people discussing Linux. What? the fact that people discuss things like UI, ease of use, installation, etc of Linux, and they compare it to any other operating system.

If we were to make the comparison exact, then the Linux UI sucks for the end user (wait! dont mod me down yet!), because an end user would not know what to do with skb_queue_empty , kfree_skb, skb_shared, skb_unshare or any of the other functions provided by the Linux interface. Do you see where I am going?

Linux is not something you can compare with other OSes, it is not something for which you can say "installation sucks" (surprise, you have *never* made a barebones Linux installation... excepting LSF fans). What people (linux fans and freaks) should discuss are the specific distributions! That will end a lot of problems...

When you say "Linux is difficult to install", I can say Of course not, in Knoppix I just turn on the computer, insert the CD and it is running! of course you might be referring to Gentoo.
Then someone else says "Linux does not support my XXYY hardware" and someone else will say "Bullshit, I use Linspire and it supports everything out of the box".

That is one of the main problems. When I talk about Linux based operating systems I talk about Ubuntu, Mandrive or Novel. When I tell my father to try a different OS I tell him to try Ubuntu OS. And if he even asks I tell him that it has its background on UNIX.

That is what is good with FreeBSD for example. When you talk about FreeBSD you are talking about one specific bundle.

Saying "Linux does not support my BCM8100 out of the box" is like saying "Windows does not support my BCM8100" out of the box referring to Windows 3.1!

And about the Mexican illegal workers. It is difficult to find whom to blame. The farmers *need* cheap labour workers in order to be able to keep the prices of their products down, this to be able to compete with other farmers and foreign products. Then, the ones who would refuse to buy the "not-the-lowest-price" product are the stores (intermediaries) like Wal*Mart and others. Of course they refuse to do this in order to decrease the price of the product to have the cheapest price. Which is the price that the *consumers* (this is, you and me) look after (so, why pay $20 for a book at your local book store if you can pay $10 at Amazon?

The only solution I see is, as other has put it, some kind of protectionism on the price of several things. The government would need to interfere in order to stablish the minimum price of certain goods (funny how that is the inverse of what happens in countries like Mexico, where the government intervene to state the Maximum price).

Your problem seems to be that you have your Sound Blaster card AND your motherboard's integrated card. When you are turning up and down the volume in the tool tool bar (after clicking the small speaker icon) you are turning the volume of your integrated sound card. What you need to do is tell linux that you want to control the SB volume when you do that.

To do that you must right click on the little speaker icon and then select properties and then on the mixer screen, in the menu you can select which soundcard do you want to use.

It doesnt matter if I have to shoot ducks, balloons, or move like an idiot (just record yourself while playing the Wii =o)) or slap some bitches (GTA), I am just having FUN.

If I want to see art at my home I will go to my computer and browse for some art. And If you try to sell me the idea that some games are also art. Oh fucking well, there are games that are a form of art. But those are games that are transcendental, not any of those hundreds PS2 games that you played once and now you dont even remember you played.

Games like Pong, Arkanoid, Tetris, Lemmings (beautiful), Mario (1 and 3), Super Mario World, Duck hunt, Thousand Arms, Final Fantasy (from 1 to 5... maybe 7 which I never played but not from 8 to 20 or what is the last one?). And so long, some games that *really* marked a new trend on games... The Sims is another of them, but I would be *more* inclined to think Sim City IS the one to be considered art.

But if we visit the main definition of art:
"Something is not considered 'art' when it stimulates only the senses, or only the mind, or when it has a different primary purpose than doing so." From the so used wikiedia

So yeah, all of those games whole purpose is to suck cash of we the innocent buyers, so you might state they are not really art.

I have not tried Windows Vista, but for what I have read and saw, it seems to me the guys at Redmond chose the less-work way to add security. So, at the end they chose to leave security as a chose to the user (with the infamous accept or cancel hundreds of screens). I really hope this is what they only mean by improved security because it is exactly the same as it was in XP. Just with more questions to the users.

It seems to me that Microsoft made with Windows Vista what I did as a kid for my homework, they assign you a homework on Monday for the next Monday, and you do not do nothing until Sunday afternoon when you read about the assignment and realize you *need* more time to do some research on the subject (lets say that the homework was to ask several people what do they think about Coke) and you just try to write something that seems to be OK just to pass the mark.

But then again, looking back at the previous Windows releases, I remember when the Windows Millennium Edition was going to be released how it was supposed to have the NT kernel and to be more stable than anything else but oh fiasco, it was Win98 with a new desktop background. And then Win2000 came out for the servers without any further and after that WindowsXP which again was Win2000 with Internet Explorer and pretty themes.

But let me tell you a factual story which I heard on first person with my own ears:

When I met one of those good American friends (a girl from Ohio) we were in Amsterdam in the same Hostel, sometime after we met, her father called her on her mobile and after some time talking she said something like "oh come on dad, who can I befriend here? you know nobody likes Americans". That is she acknowledged that people do not like them.

I was a bit surprised to see that but then again not so much because see, all of the people from USA I have met is people who I met outside USA. And almost all of these people acknowledged in one way or another that Americans usually closed and they think they are the best and their country is heaven and that everybody sucks... again I am telling you the ideas that this people let me understand (and It was not just one, if you are interested, it was two in La Paz, BCS; one in Xalapa, Veracruz; one in Barcelona, Spain; two in Liverpool, UK; and those are all that I remember, all of them unrelated to one another).

I do not make any generalization because that will mean that all these friends are also whatever they said. But well, I can see a pattern when it emerges. Of course the sample is very tiny but statistically it has been something like the 90% of the Americans I have met.

    1. They are called Sound Suppressors not "silencers". They do not "silence" the sound just diminish it.
    2. They do not really suppress the sound the way movies put it (I am looking at you Mr. Bauer).

Motion pictures have produced the common misconception that sound suppressors ("silencers") completely silence the weapon's sound, or reduce it to a quiet whistling sound, which is in most cases very far from the truth. In fact, the emergent noise can still be heard from a fairly large distance. The quiet whistling sound associated with silencers is more attributable to the noise made by air guns 3. (And the most interesting for me) They are good just for a small number of shots (Yeah, again looking at you Mr. Bauer)

Very effective suppressors either involve a large total suppressor volume, a moderately large volume plus many baffles, or wipes. It is possible to design a very small and compact suppressor with wipes which effectively silences a pistol; these suppressors have a lifetime of as few as 4-5 shots and typically no more than a few magazines of ammunition. Larger wipeless (baffle only) pistol or rifle suppressors may be nearly as effective for long lifetimes (hundreds or thousands of shots) but are relatively bulky, clumsy, and heavy.
