    "We're trying to change the economics of the software industry. Our hope is that in the next two years, all these companies that are starting with Microsoft APIs will start with Linux instead." That is a key mindset to getting Linux out of its niche and into the mainstream. Thinking Linux first can't be a bad thing at all.

    I hope this lives up to its hype (and promise). I may have to finally break down and get an Macintel (much to the chagrin of my PPC army).

    I seem to remember doing some work a few years back in 'Split-C' and 'Concurrent-C' too. They worked just fine for multi-processors back then so I can only imagine they'd be geared up and ready for multi-cores.

    Dude, don't let a blocked port stop you from running a server. Or stop you from sending out Spam. If there's a will there's a way. ;-)

    Ditto.
    The ISP of one of my clients just turned on 'greylisting' and their mail volume dropped 71%, knocking their spam % down to 11% of their new volume.

    They would rather spend the budget on stopping spam rather than upgrading their servers. It's that big of a problem.

    DKIM will help (until fake 'certificates' show up) but it won't solve the problem. Only flame-throwers, and lots of them, will fix this once and for all.

    And if you think you're going to get 30 years out of the technologies that are new now, then you're wrong there too. I've been coding in 'C' for 24 years, and unless OS's, drivers, embedded systems, et al, stop caring about performance I think 'C' will out last me in this industry (and probably out live me, too).

    That's the double edge sword that is the IT business. Keep learning, keep growing or start flipping burgers. I've coded in over 20 languages in my career, from assembly languages to proprietary 4GL's and everything in between, on more platforms than I have fingers. My library has programming texts older than most coders today. Keep learning? Great advice. Give up on 'C'? That's another story entirely ...

    ... the first thing I do for my clients is either clean up all that crap or reinstall the OS (depending on which one will be faster and cheaper for them). I doubt Dell installs this kind of sh!t (and all that other crapware) on the computers their employees use ... Google probably doesn't either.

    Also, it's still not terribly efficient, since it requires 1 lb of aluminum per mile you drive. So if I was made of aluminum I could drive 200 miles ... and Rosie O'Donnell could drive even further!

    Seriously, since aluminum is light 200 lbs would probably take up too much space in a compact, no? And I realize that 200 miles isn't that far, but since I already spilled the beans on my weight I figured I'd stick with the number ;-) The process to replace/recycle the aluminum & gallium better be quick and easy or we'll spend more time as the "gas station" recycling than we did waiting for gas.

    It's like canceling your cable because of bad reruns of the Rosanne show or something that "offended" you on the Colbert Report. Whoa there ... let's not mislead anyone into thinking that there are good reruns of Rosanne out there or that Stephen Colbert can do anything wrong. Offensive statements like that could get you banned from the intertubes or even XM Radio.

    One megabyte of hard drive space is 1,000,000 bytes: 106 bytes. Operating systems calculate one megabyte as 220 bytes, or 1,048,576 bytes. That was from TFA (not just the summary). I asked my calculator about that but it just got a headache.

    Takimoto also made the bold claim that by 2020, hybrids will be the standard drivetrain and account for '100 percent' of Toyota's cars as they would be no more expensive to produce than a conventional vehicle. 100% is a lofty goal. Is that just cars or does it include trucks & SUV's too?
