  2. Re:Ozone production FTW on New Chip-cooling Technology · · Score: 2, Informative

Actually ozone is a problem in the lower atmosphere. Ozone is very harmful to breathe and can be a problem on hot days in cities. You are talking about the ozone holes in the upper atmosphere, which is a different problem. If these things were to produce ozone (which i doubt), they would actually be harmful and not helpful as the ozone would not patch the ozone hole.

  5. LG VX8300 on What's the Worst Technical Feature You've Used? · · Score: 1

The VX8300 is one of the most common phones because it is so damn good. It gets service everywhere and has a pretty good battery life. It even has VCast capability for Verizon and can take SD cards and stuff.

One problem - if you ever load any music onto it, beware if it in your pocket. When the flip is down, there are "easily accessible" VCast control buttons on the front, and if you hold down the play button the music will start playing. I have had the music go off during class like 2 or 3 times before i just took off all the music. It even will turn on when you are in manner mode (which is supposed to turn everything to silent). The only way to disable it is to lock your phone.

  6. Price reduction solution on The Light Bulb That Can Change the World · · Score: 1

In NJ, CFL's are often subsidized down to a very cheap price. I remember getting 60W equivilant CFL's for $1.00 a piece at Home Depot. This is the sort of start that is going to get consumers to make the switch. It sure did for me, now most of my lightbulbs are CFL's.

On a side note, I don't understand what people are saying with the white light factor. I thought i remembered hearing that it is better for your eyes to read in white light, vs the yellowish light of an incandecent. I always had a problem with yellow light hurting my eyes.

P.S. A cool thing i discovered about CFLs is that if it is dark and you rub your feet on the ground to build up charge and touch them, you can get them to flicker pretty easily.

One problem: In this case, you couldn't turn around while talking, you would have to remain in the same position basically for the whole time. This seems like a big pain in the ass. I pace all the time while talking on the phone.

I say just get rid of all those extra features like color screens and cameras if you are worried about battery life. My phone is an old LG phone without color or fancy ring tones and stuff. The battery can literally last 4 or 5 days on standby.

...would be the fact that the huge amount of space, even with 2 layers, allows for higher resolution/less compression. If you want good textures from a car, why not take pictures of it? If you want a good texture of a street, take a picture of it. And better yet, make that picture a high resolution picture. Even more, make that street have more textures than it previously would need. That way we dont get the Wolfenstein-3D-wall/Speed-Racer-background style redundancy that we have seen up until now. I dont know about you guys/gals, but I am really bored of having every crate look exactly the same and have the walls be just a repeat of some 32 x 32 camera phone picture compressed until you can't compress it anymore. That goes for sounds too, although the commonly used mp3 format does justice to most sound effects.

Oh yeah, the DRM stuff shouldn't bother many people either. XBox Live already prevents mod chipping. Don't get me wrong, I don't have an XBox partially because of that reason and that might the reason for me to choose Revolution or XBox 360 over PS3, but don't act like it is anything new.

  10. Re:When did this begin... on Devs Weigh In On Playing The Bad Guy · · Score: 2, Insightful
I believe that people got so used to having the good guy beat the bad guy, that the bad guy became the underdog. As stated in a previous /. story (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/08/24/15262 52&tid=217 i think it was), people like to root for the underdog.

Players became the badguy to finally see the good guy fail.

As for being harmful, you kill the bad guy when you are good... you kill the good guy when you're bad. There are other aspects of the game that affect the harmfulness much more than whether you are the good guy or bad guy.

  11. The older we get the worse shape we are... on Scientists Discover Possible Anti-Aging Gene · · Score: 2, Insightful

From a person who doesn't know much about this topic, it seems like the longer people live, the worse shape they become. As people start reaching their late 70s and 80s, they getting many health problems that, quite frankly, I would rather not live with. These problems can be mental and/or physical so that you could have a body that is fragile and brittle, but a working mind. This makes it so that you know that you are brittle and fragile, but you can't do anything about it. The reverse of that would be pretty bad too.

I know that I would not want live in that state. Just imagine yourself in the early stages of alzheimer's where you know that you are forgetting all that you used to know. I'm sure to incite a couple of fierce replies with this next comment but it is my opinion: I would want to be euthanized if I was in that state.

The article does state that in the mice, the typical effects of old age were delayed. But I would bet anything that in humans, infertility and diabetes would be only the start of the problems caused by this.

P.S. People who oppose my opinion, don't take offense to what I say for it is simply my opinion and it often changes as more information is taken into account.

As being a high school slashdotter myself, i find that, in my high school at least, most kids are not interested in anything that will make them look nerdy. Maybe this is just an east coast thing, but i know that the biggest thing that happens to my school is the football games (Jocky, but more so popular), with a close second being the Pep Rally (Funny).

I think the main thing is to please the masses by being funny first, with a dash of amazement thrown in on the side... only then do you hit them with the science part.

You will be surprised how many people's interests you will catch with that plan of action. That's just my two bits, but what do I know... I'm just a dumb teenager.
