The HandEra take 4AAAs and weighs about .2 ounces more than a IIIx. There is a option comming out this summer for a Li Ion battery. It also has the same dimensions and connectors as a III series so you have a ready supply of cheap accessories.

To be honest, with the ammount of support SGI is throwing into Linux, I wouldn't be surprised if IRIX disappears in the next few years and they wind up cutting Alias|Wavefront lose so they can just concentrate on building machines.

Another good sign of this is the fact that SGI is working on a version of Maya (A|W's current top dog 3D modeler) for Linux.

I think the reason behind this is to generate some revenue. THIS IS NOT A BAD THING. The USB Group didn't have a source of income untill this. I don't think that this was a push to go close source, it is just a attempt to get some working cash. They probably expect most of the members to be big corps like Microsoft, SGI, and Intel. Those people don't give a rats ass about paying $2500 for a membership.

I would not be suprised if someone e-mail them, they would probably grant access to those docs to the Linux community. OR someone like RedHat could buy a membership, post the docs and the USB Group wouldn't complain about it if it was used for the Linux community.

The entire idea behind USB is to kill off PCI. I don't think they would commit suicide by locking up the spec and throwing away the key for a large growing market area. (Yes we are being considered a market area.

This is just my 2 cents worth.

There are a few good reasons for NetBEUI. Here are a couple:

1: It's not TCP/IP and it's not routeable, therefore non attackable unless you are on the same network.

2: For people on cable modems, NetBEUI is a better protocol for file sharing because it doesn't get spewed out to the entire network.

3: (Cable modems again). Screwey Cable Cos can put different machines on the same modem onto different class Cs. This makes TCP/IP really bad for moving data arround because you are limited to you modem bandwidth.
