Unfortunately, this still isn't a great solution. We have a few hundred macs where I work, running software update once a week (they are staggered), by way of a cron job. Seems that if for some reason a mac is rebooted during this job, there is a good chance the OS will get completely hosed, corrupting the file system to a point that all the goofy tools out there still can't fix it. For some reason, booting single user mode you can still read the data, then shove it off onto a firewire drive.
The only reason to use package managers is if you are new to Linux or just don't want to learn much.
Or perhaps time? When my boss says "give me a moodle server" and I can build a box, install debian and moodle, and still have it for him that morning, he's a lot happier than me saying "oh wait, bash etc. is still compiling".
That is the biggest question. I have a builtin 801.11b in my laptop that uses the orinoco_pci, orinoco, and hermes modules, and a card that uses the rt2500 module. EVERY distribution I've tried in the past year has been able to use both cards. Ubuntu configured my wireless on the install (had to manually install before breezy came out). Gentoo I had to "emerge rt2500". If you have any idea what card you want, just search the forums for the distro you are going to run beforehand, you should find out pretty quickly if you have a hassle or not ahead of you.
I have it installed in my firefox in gentoo... is there any way to move the darn thing? It takes up a lot of real estate, I'd like to get rid of most of the buttons and move it to where the google search that comes with firefox used to reside.
I agree with the grandparent. Let's go through a timeline of nintendo's handhelds starting with the gameboy (ignoring before that):
1989: gameboy launched
1996: gameboy pocked launched (better screen, smaller, but same game system)
1998: gameboy color launched. This is nine years after the original gameboy, and it still played gameboy games.
2001: gameboy advance launched.
2003: gameboy advance sp launched. Mostly cosmetic changes to the original gameboy advance.
2004: nintendo DS launched. Backwards compatible with gameboy advance.
What on earth are you crying about? We've basically got 3 systems since 1989, and each "new" one has been backwards compatible. The original gameboy advance game out in 2001. The DS was the next major change, in late 2004. Actually, can you name many other markets that have moved that SLOW???
I've been using netjuke for over a year, it streams mp3's and other audio files. I think video might be in it's future. Check it out http://www.netjuke.org/. I use it under linux, but works just as easily under windows.
A lot of people seem skeptical so far. I've been using qemu to run windows98 under linux for close to a year now. This was before this "accelerator" It was definitely usable. I needed windows for an application from my job, and this let me use it without rebooting. I installed it using the following instructions: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-186001-highli ght-qemu+howto.html
Go to a yard sale and buy an old window, then hang it up in your cube. Put a poster of a nice beach or some other scene inside of it. Instant beach side property!
Doctor: Here's the door to your body, see? [bring up some small fuzz balls with goofy faces and limbs from under the desk] And these are oversized novelty germs. [points to a different one up as he names each disease] That's influenza, that's bronchitis, [holds up one] and this cute little cuddle-bug is pancreatic cancer. Here's what happens when they all try to get through the door at once. [tries to cram a bunch through the model door. The "germs" get stuck] [Stooge-like] Woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo! Move it, chowderhead! [normal voice] We call it, "Three Stooges Syndrome." Burns: So what you're saying is, I'm indestructible! Doctor: Oh, no, no, in fact, even slight breeze could -- Burns: Indestructible.
AFAIK, gentoo games has been dead for a while. I run gentoo, and actually got introduced to it through gentoogames, as they had a bootable cd with unreal tournament on it. It used to be available on http://www.gentoogames.com/ but that site has been blank for some time. Is there anywhere else to get info on the project?
There is a lan option, according to the gran turismo 4 web site, and on the xlink kai site they list gran turismo 4 as being supported. Basically, this is tunneling software that let's you play the LAN mode over the internet.
Wired or wireless shouldn't make any difference, as you can use a wireless to ethernet bridge for any "wired" device. I had my house built within the past year, and made sure every room was wired. Here is what I used to get music to every room: xbox media center Optical out, lots of other options. Rio receiver running yarrs I have been using this for years, just a small device to play mp3's off of the network. You can hook speakers up to it directly or just use it as a component. qcast lets you stream mp3's to your playstation 2. Not as useful or functional as the xbox media center. netjuke this let's me stream music to any other computer in a nice and tidy web interface.
you can also go with a squeezebox but I have no experience with it. The rio is much less expensive.

It was there when the story still had 0 comments...

Well, it may be easy to infer how to do this, but the article linked did not suggest or instruct how to do this.
I don't need to karma whore (mine's excellent), and it's a different link, but ok.

My district as well. Unfortunately, in our district, I think you'll be better off campaigning about crows than about technology.

i think all of them at least have that nubby thing if you turn the touchpad off, but this x series seem to not have the touchpad at all.

Or not... seems this is very similar, also from AMD, but it is now a little cheaper and running linux instead of a version of windows.
