Nikkei Business reported that, to date,.6 percent of the 800,000 shipped units have been returned to Sony for repair.
So, less than 5000 of the units have been returned for repair. Does anyone have any numbers of how this compares to other consoles, especially the Nintendo DS? I honestly have no idea. I will, however tip my cap to nintendo for promising to fix any dead pixels
Anyone know what happens to people that paid the previously higher price? I recall something like this happening to the powerbook? I could be wrong, but I think mac reimbursed in some way.
Answer: no.
Where's my open source cell phone, playstation 2, ipod, microwave oven, roomba, etc?
Most people are only concerned that the product they use functions as it was intended.
wired has an article with some facts backing this up
Surgeons who play video games three hours a week have 37 percent fewer errors and accomplish tasks 27 percent faster, he says, basing his observation on results of tests using the video game Super Monkey Ball.
Likely just dropping it in favor of the analog stick. Anyone remember the nes max controller? It had a, well, look at the picture. I hated it and would always use the outer black edge to control instead of the moveable thumb pad thing.
I never used the dpad on my gamecube controller, but part of that is because I feel they made it too small. The xbox and ps2 ones have a better feel. Anyhow, I guess the only use left for the ol' dpad is on a belt buckle

So I'd say.. no chance of a torrent coming from them.

Wired recently posted an article about the benefits of video gaming for surgeons.

Not bag phones, the primitive portable stopgap often carried around in a canvas case, which send residents out in their pickups searching for service "hot spots," but real telephones wired to a land line.
Does anyone know what these things are? I have never heard of them before. Google turned this up
I don't think many people will take it the way you suggest. For those not in the know, penny arcade holds a season long charity called "child's play" that asks for donations for children's hospitals. This is the second year running for it. Child's play has been receiving much more media attention this year, thus driving up the bandwidth needed by the site.
Q: Why should humans go back to the moon?
A: The moon has a lot of resources that we'll learn how to use in this century and that will be great.... The technologies we need to live and work on the moon will save us right here on this planet.
Bad things are inevitably going to happen to us, like comet or asteroid impacts or super volcanoes. Flying in space is risky business, but just staying on this planet is risky business too.
The statistical risk of humans getting wiped out in the next 100 years due to a super volcano or asteroid or comet impact is 1 in 455. How does that relate? You're 10 times more likely to get wiped out by a civilization-ending event in the next 100 years than you are getting killed in a commercial airline crash.
The most dangerous thing we do in Houston, of course, is drive our automobiles to work every day, so you know how dangerous that is and how many people get killed doing that. But wiping out civilization....
It's not the point that we should move (to another planet). It's the point that the technologies that we need to live and work in other places in the solar system will help us survive on Earth when these bad things happen.
Ok, he's a 74 year old former astronaut. That doesn't make him more credible in my book when he makes such an ominous claim. Does anyone have a reference about this statistic?
Personally, I like the idea, but I don't see any reason the game companies would be for it. Currently, if I only use a game 3 hours a week, I'm still paying the full monthly fee. The game company is making out good in that situation. I don't think offering pay as you go would draw as many new people, as it would reduce the number of people paying for a monthly fee. Not to mention the technical aspect of tracking and billing people by time. And if a user has an issue with bugs or gameplay during the game, they are losing money, whereas with a flat monthly fee all they are losing is time.
I had installed Xandros on my little sister's celeron 300 and it actually ran along side windows 98 quite well. This was about 2 months ago. I had never used Xandros before but had read it was very newbie friendly. I must admit I took quite a liking to the file manager, that they call xfm (xandros file manager). Imagine my disappointment after doing an "emerge xfm" on my machine. I wish it were available for other distros.

1. doesn't look like he's going to be slashdotted
2. here is a coral cache http://mywebpages.comcast.net.nyud.net:8090/adamb
The two that come to mind the quickest are xvid and divx. Beyond that, check out http://www.videohelp.com/ for a lot more info on video codecs.

It should be mentioned that the player you linked ALSO works on the nintendo ds!
