  1. Re:Mac OS X Server on Managing Mac OS Updates in an Enterprise? · · Score: 1

Unfortunately, this still isn't a great solution. We have a few hundred macs where I work, running software update once a week (they are staggered), by way of a cron job. Seems that if for some reason a mac is rebooted during this job, there is a good chance the OS will get completely hosed, corrupting the file system to a point that all the goofy tools out there still can't fix it. For some reason, booting single user mode you can still read the data, then shove it off onto a firewire drive.

The only reason to use package managers is if you are new to Linux or just don't want to learn much.

Or perhaps time? When my boss says "give me a moodle server" and I can build a box, install debian and moodle, and still have it for him that morning, he's a lot happier than me saying "oh wait, bash etc. is still compiling".

That is the biggest question. I have a builtin 801.11b in my laptop that uses the orinoco_pci, orinoco, and hermes modules, and a card that uses the rt2500 module. EVERY distribution I've tried in the past year has been able to use both cards. Ubuntu configured my wireless on the install (had to manually install before breezy came out). Gentoo I had to "emerge rt2500". If you have any idea what card you want, just search the forums for the distro you are going to run beforehand, you should find out pretty quickly if you have a hassle or not ahead of you.

I agree with the grandparent. Let's go through a timeline of nintendo's handhelds starting with the gameboy (ignoring before that):

    1989: gameboy launched
1996: gameboy pocked launched (better screen, smaller, but same game system)
1998: gameboy color launched. This is nine years after the original gameboy, and it still played gameboy games.
    2001: gameboy advance launched.
2003: gameboy advance sp launched. Mostly cosmetic changes to the original gameboy advance.
2004: nintendo DS launched. Backwards compatible with gameboy advance.

What on earth are you crying about? We've basically got 3 systems since 1989, and each "new" one has been backwards compatible. The original gameboy advance game out in 2001. The DS was the next major change, in late 2004. Actually, can you name many other markets that have moved that SLOW???

xbox media center Optical out, lots of other options.
Rio receiver running yarrs I have been using this for years, just a small device to play mp3's off of the network. You can hook speakers up to it directly or just use it as a component.
qcast lets you stream mp3's to your playstation 2. Not as useful or functional as the xbox media center.
netjuke this let's me stream music to any other computer in a nice and tidy web interface.
