  1. Maybe 1000 years from now..... on Tiny Flyer Navigates Like Fly · · Score: 2, Interesting

But this thing is a plane, so it's a bad choice. It's not much use in the great outdoors if it's very small, because the lightest gust of wind is going to send it 50' off course. Besides, the need to maintain forward progress to ensure lift is going to make a fixed-wing aircraft a tool of limited use, except maybe for buzzing drunk schoolmates at the annual picnic.

I completely agree. Flies move by flapping their wings at a high speed, allowing for quick changes in direction and such. Fixed wing aircraft require forward momentum along with changes to control surfaces in order to change direction. The problem with a fixed wing aircraft that is the size of a fly is that not just a gust of wind, but even the tiniest ripple in the surrounding air, will cause it to either stall or move off course. Not to mention they would have to miniaturize everything: the propeller, power source, cameras, and all other on board electronics. The article says that it could one day be used for search and rescue but I don't know how an autonomous robot is going to know to look for humans, unless it has an infared sensor which just adds that much more weight. And even then, they would have to have a computer on the airplane that would understand all of this information. And to think, it has a 14" wingspan right now and all it can do is avoid walls! I'm sure the inventor has good intentions and all but this just sounds completely unreasonable to me.

If an artist makes one good song and the rest crap, you only pay .99 and get that one song.

This is the problem with music today, people know that many bands are only one hit wonders (and usually the "hits" aren't even that great) yet they continue purchasing bullshit commerical, mainstream music. Consider your $.99 wasted on nothing. If you are going to purchase music from an artist you like, make sure you like the whole album (or most of it.) Because if you don't like most of the band's music, then you shouldn't be listening to their music or supporting them financially.

  14. We don't want you "running" things! on Ten Reasons to Buy Windows Vista · · Score: 1

From TFA: Heck, it took me almost five minutes to find the Run command, which used to show up right in the Start menu.

I think this illustrates the differences between the Windows and Linux worlds. With the next version of Windows, they don't want you to be running commands or going into a command prompt. With the next version of KDE (at least in the mockups) it's been shown there will be a text entry area for directly entering commands integrated into the K menu. It's already been done in SuSE (and possibly others I'm not aware of)

This just goes to show that Microsoft thinks all of their users are idiots, and Linux developers want their users (even the newbies) to be more adept at using their OS.

  15. Tossed Salad? on Ten Reasons to Buy Windows Vista · · Score: 1

From TFA: Over the years, one of the key reasons to upgrade versions of Windows has been the free stuff Gates and Company toss into the new OS

While I'll agree that they like to "toss" things into their OS, I don't see what is so compelling about the free things they are "tossing" in. If Windows was a tossed salad it would probably be a boring iceberg salad with a whole ton of ranch dressing sprayed all over it.

If Microsoft has a better product, I wouldn't even know about it because I am satisfied with Google.

Ok, so if all of your friends started telling you to use MSN Search because of it's superior technology, you would just keep on trying Google without one chance of even trying the MSN search? That's like saying you would have kept using Yahoo (or whatever) even when Google came out.

One thing about Microsoft, they know business. They know every clean and dirty trick in the book. This promotion is designed to get users using the search engine for a period of time. Getting them accustomed to it. This marketing campaign will only be effective if their product has some superior aspects to the Google search engine. I don't think Microsoft would be dumb enough to pull this if they had nothing to offer.

No, this marketing campaign will be effective regardless of whether the technology is better or not. Most people are dumb, they like free things, and will try it just to get those free things. They aren't going to read up on the latest tech powering their engine. They just want free crap.

Word of mouth is not the most effective advertising method, and it is never sufficient to rapidly penetrate a market.

Word of mouth is one of the most effective advertising methods known because the people telling you to buy the product are people you know. You are more likely to trust your friend or family member's opinion over what the TV or radio (even banner ad) is shouting at you. As far as rapidly penetrating a market, hmm, let's see. What about World of Warcraft. Haven't seen any ads on TV or billboards recently. I guess their 5 million subscribers just kinda heard about it through word of mouth. Google? Word of mouth. LINUX? Word of mouth.

The DVD burner they sent him was DOA. These are minor issues that plague all vendors of IT equipment, however New Egg claims to provide such great quality for that extra couple dollars you spend. I guess I'm just not seeing the inherent value. What I must add is that New Egg has been known to have one of the best return policies anywhere, this is why I want to see how their return system works!
