Sorry Reziac but I tried the shell hacks and it don't fix enough, it still has all that shit running in the background, you just can't see it, so its still sucking up your net with all the tweeting twit shit social crap, still has the royally fucked up "If you thought the ribbon was irritating boy are YOU gonna be pissed!" God awful Ribbon UI based file explorer, so its still fucked, its like dumping a can of perfume on a pile of shit as it may not smell as bad, but its NOT roses.
That may be it, I honestly couldn't remember how old the kid was, i just knew it was a little kid. Still don't get what a kid randomly poking shit to get it to do stuff is supposed to "prove" though, other than little kids like shiny things and will spend hours fucking with them. To me a MUCH more telling video is this one where a guy sits his nan in front of a Win 8 PC just like she got her new laptop home and fired it up. if it was soooo intuitive, why is she sitting there completely lost Why is it that without a long list of arcane commands memorized she can't get shit done? I just wish i had links to the guy that did it was his uncle because sure enough the apologists came on and said "It would be the same if it were OSX, he is just confused by the new hotness!" and the guy simply answered "Challenge accepted" and filmed his uncle in front of the latest OSX, he was surfing the net in less than 3 minutes just fine.
And the reason it reminds you of the primitive GUIs of the 80s is because that is exactly what it is since MSFT didn't know how to build a mobile OS that didn't have a teeny tiny start button and microscopic menus they just went back to the pre Win95 single tasking crap. I also think its because they have added so much shit on top of the WinNT kernel over the years they simply can't figure out how to have it use modern features without blowing through the RAM and CPU budget of ARM so rather than actually investing into learning they just said "fuck it, what did we do when the PC didn't have much memory and a tiny screen? We'll just do that again" and thought we would forget our history.
Well I personally sure as hell haven't, and even on my little 12 inch netbook i run more than one fricking task at a time! I'm buying exactly one copy next month before the sale ends, just to add beside my copy of Vista and in case i ever run across a piece of software that HAS to have Win 8 I can slap it in a VM, but personally I'd rather be stuck 10 hours a day on a Vista Basic netbook than have Win 8 touch my desktop again, fuck that mess.
Actually according to their own spec page it would be higher than minimum across the board, and the only thing that wouldn't hit recommended is the graphics card. But to use that as a benchmark is as pointless as the "will it play Crysis?" meme as that is only ONE (I would argue badly coded, just like Crysis) game compared to the 10s of 1000s of games it would run on high or near high. My boys and I are playing on HD4850s and we can play games like Just Cause II with so much bling it makes the explosions in Rambo look like firecrackers going off.
Because one of the major fails when it comes to Linux design is software (like drivers) requiring a certain kernel version, so unless someone sits there and backports every driver, which FYI isn't actually even possible ATM because both Nvidia and AMD have binary blobs, the open source drivers are several gen behind and lacking critical features such as HD video acceleration, then frankly you are just fucked.
This is one of the places where one can point to Windows and say "This is a better idea" because you can use the Win 7 driver that came on the CD with RTM, with SP1, you'll be able to use that same driver with Win 7 3 weeks before it is EOLed in 2020 if you want, this is simply impossible with Linux. Feel free to try it,take the binary blob that was released for lets say a Geforce 7600GS in 07 when Vista came out (since Vista drivers work on Win 7 just fine) and see if it works with a current release of whatever distro you choose. or take the binary that was released when Win 7 was RTMed in Aug 09, bet that won't work either.
Frankly this is one area where Torvalds should just be smacked as there should be NO REASON why that driver from 07 shouldn't install and run perfectly fine on the latest release, barring trying to run a 32bit on a 64 or vice versa, and the fact that drivers and other software are actually tied to what kernel you have is frankly just shoddy design. But of course Torvalds wouldn't be able to fiddle with any damned thing he wants in the kernel like its still 1993 and its his pet project otherwise, would he?
Do you get paid Mr Perens? if so I'd say you're being a bit of a hypocrite, as the company that pays you isn't just handing you money because you smell nice ya know, its because they intend to profit from your labor. Without looking up what you've been up to lately I'll take a wild guess and say you or your employer is following one of the 3 "pre-approved" methods listed below, yes? which if correct proves what I've been saying for years, that Linux has no place on a desktop since desktops don't fit into one of the 3 "blessed" business models.
Mark Shuttleworth invested millions into canonical and like anybody else who invests a large sum he would at least like to break even, and considering the fact that Linux was virtually unknown outside the server room before Canonical came along and started polishing it up and trying to fix the "Its too complicated" image problem i'd say at the very least he deserves to make a few bucks.
But all of this ranting and hatred directed at Canonical has proven ONE thing, it has proven that what the corps said were correct and GPL should be avoided like an STD unless you are a non profit or intending to survive with one of the "pre-approved" FOSS methods of which there are only 3, software contracts, selling hardware, and tin cup begging. After all Jobs used BSD and built an empire, Shuttleworth used Linux and is getting spat upon for trying to keep the lights on. if I were a new business starting out i know what lesson I'd take away from that, that I wouldn't allow a single line of code written for me or used by me be GPL, period.
I'll get hate for saying this but fuck it this is how I feel, this is EXACTLY why I can't fucking stand RMS, because in just about every way he IS the classic Internet Troll. There can be NO discussion of an issue, NO moderation, NO exchange of ideas or attempts to meet each other in the middle, he is like the absolute worst of partisan politics concentrated into a giant flaming troll.
In every single rant and every single conversation as far as as RMS is concerned there is only TWO answers, either you agree with every fucking thing he does and says and are therefor "good" or you don't and you are a "sinner" and bad and destroying kittens and kicking puppies. Even the head of Red Hat says "RMS treats his friends like his enemies" because one can NEVER disagree with him, not ever, or you are just a worthless piece of shit destroying the planet.
So just to put my own spin on his totally tasteless rant when Steve Jobs died "I won't be glad when he's dead but I'll be glad when he's gone" because just like dealing with a ranting political hack or Internet troll its ALL "good VS evil" with of course everything good defined by what St iGNUcious believes and everything evil is those that dont kiss the ring and fall in line. So I'd say he is far worse than childish, most people can see childish behavior and dismiss the person for acting like they are four, nope this is MUCH worse, its the classic Faux News HuffPo "You are with me or against me!" divisive bullshit that frankly makes having a civilized conversation all but impossible.
Kinda sad that a company would raise a stink over something so trivial, then again Apple being control freaks isn't exactly a new development here.
That said I can understand why they'd want to save the keyboard, those old clacky keyboard were really built like tanks and work great. I keep telling myself next load of clacky keyboards that come through the shop I'm gonna put aside a couple for spares in case anything happens to my old clacky boards I have at home and at the shop but every time my friends find out I have got my hands on some more clacky boards they end up talking me into selling them. My last spare, a great IBM classic complete with the old 5 pin to PS/2 adapter my oldest carted off, he was at the shop and just loved the feel of my clacky and when he found out I had a spare in the back that was it, that sweet old IBM was headed out the door.
So anybody that don't get why they would go to all the trouble really needs to try a clacky, the feel of those keyboards is just wonderful and the things just last and last.
That probably wouldn't be easy as too many things are evolving too rapidly in Linux ATM, you have the kernel changes, Pulse,Unity, and of course you have the issues with the graphics drivers, its just changing far too rapidly to make a good DIY console using Linux.
I'll probably get hate for pointing this out but other than Tablets this is the one place where Win 8's metro GUI actually works well, its Metro interface is practically a 10 foot UI right OOTB, hard to miss those big ass fugly tiles with a remote on a 50 inch screen, and it probably wouldn't be hard at all to set steam to launch in BPM automatically at start up. And of course since neither the kernel nor the subsystems will be changed for the life of the OS once you have it set the way you like it just like a console that's it, it'll stay that way for the life of the system. And while I personally prefer Win 7 at $40 a pop Win 8 makes a cheap OS for a STB and of course that gives you access to the entire steam library and not just the few that use OpenGL.
That said I wish Valve nothing but luck, with both Valve and Sony bringing X86 based consoles to market its gonna be another golden age for us PC gamers, since it'll be trivial to launch both the console and the PC version at the same time. Frankly its a great time to be a PC gamer regardless, you can pick up AMD triple kits for $200, quads for less than $250, slap a cheap copy of Windows on it along with an HD4850 or HD7770 and for less than $360 you have a system that'll play nearly any game out there with great graphics on a monitor or a TV with HDMI.
I have built several of these for customers and they just love it, a full blown HTPC is just so much more versatile than a console, you can rip all your music and movies to it and use it as a media center, through Steam gaming is cheap, streaming over the web means you can get rid of the cable bill, and most games support controllers now so you can just grab a couple of cheap wireless X360 pads and have fun.
With LCD TV prices falling like a stone and all of them having HDMI the gamer boxes and the dirt cheap AMD E350 "wife wants her FB" boxes are my two biggest sellers ATM, its soooo much cheaper now than it was when I first started gaming. Remember when we'd have to replace our entire systems every year and a half just to play the latest games? So I'm personally all for this, more gamers on X86 means more games and plenty of selection, sounds good to me. Go Valve!
But what you are ignoring is there are a lot of people that like RPGs that don't go for the text heavy D&D style and by hyping the hell out of it all you're doing is setting up all those that aren't into harcore D&D style role play for a disappointment.
I'd suggest that anybody who hasn't played it look up one of those "Let's Play" videos on YouTube for it and if it looks interesting to them THEN they should buy it. After all everyone has different tastes and the hard core role playing as opposed to a Diablo II hack and slash is about as opposite as opposite can be and to stick them both in the same category under a generic title like RPG just doesn't work. It would be like saying those that like Saturday Night Fever would like Saw, since they are both movies with an S at the front of their names.
Look up "defense industry revolving door" into the search engine of your choice, you'll find all the proof you'll need. its no different than how the member heading a committee on ISP regulations quit after passing a VERY favorable to ISPs bill to go and work for Comcast, or how more than half the lobbyists in Washington are former congress critters, look that up and you'll see a pattern going back decades of those in charge of testing and procurement retiring only to go work for the defense industry. Hell look up the history of the B-2, the company just cut a check to every member of congress (that came out to less than 8% of what they made on the sale) even though a stealth bomber in an age of ICBMs really didn't make sense.
At the end of the day until we see some tests comparable to what you'd see in battle I'd argue these tests are worthless. Just look up at the incredible score that Patriot got during its tests, in the field it was found to get maybe 30%, and even that is doubtful as the Scuds were so old and the metal so thin they began to break up during terminal phase so there is no way to tell if the patriot actually hit anything or just blew up in the debris falling behind the warhead. I also find it telling in their so called tests nobody had even bothered to leave the systems on for a week, if they did they would have found the memory leak in the software that caused the Patriot to get more inaccurate the longer it was left on.
so I'll reserve judgement until we seen some real battlefield tests, although sadly by then the contractors will have already made their money and if it turns out to be a dud we're just stuck with it.
You know you really shouldn't use big words if you don't know what they mean, as it makes you look stupid. An Ad-hominem attack is to attempt to derail a discussion on POLICIES or beliefs by making it personal, since the ENTIRE POINT of this thread is NOT a discussion on the merits of the GPL or FOSS but that RMS with his bad and increasingly bizarre behavior is a bad spokesman for the cause there can not be an Ad-hominem in this case, since the entire discussion is about him personally, not the GPL.
By your reasoning if RMS walked out on stage and...ohh I don't know, ate nasty toe funk from his foot then nobody would be able to mention or say anything about it, since it isn't about his beliefs on the GPL and FOSS and thus would be a Ad-hominem attack. Learn what the words mean before you use them, otherwise it makes you look foolish when you use them incorrectly..
Go to YouTube and look up "Little kid Windows 8" and you'll see it, they say it "proves" that Win 8 is the most intuitive thing out there because some little kid is able to find his games on the thing...LUL WUT? I've seen kids spend hours just trying to draw a circle on an etch-a sketch, all that "proves" to me is that a little kid with infinite time and nothing better to do figured out by random poking where the right place was to get his game, no different than a hamster that spends hours smacking a food dispenser, what better thing does he have to do?
For the rest of us who have better things to do than poke random areas in the hopes of tripping over the right combo that will give us what took 15 seconds with nothing but the mouse before I say avoid Win 8 like an STD. The vast majority of Windows users are "hunt and peckers" that do NOT have all those unintuitive keyboard shortcuts memorized and the fact that an OS that was obviously supposed to be designed for tablets requires a keyboard and a cheat sheet of commands to get anything done just shows you what a mess it is!
The only nice thing I can say about Win 8 is it makes Vista look great by comparison, in fact if i was forced to choose between Win 8 Ultimate or Vista Basic I would take Vista Basic without a second thought. As one reviewer so aptly put it Windows 8 is THAT bad.
The reason they joke is because short of violent revolution there isn't a thing you can do about it. The majority of the media outlets are owned by a handful of rich old insiders that are gonna make damned sure anybody that doesn't "play ball" never gets heard, look up the John Stewart video on Ron Paul where when it looked like people might actually vote for him he became "he who shall not be named" with reporters even listing who came in first, second, FOURTH and fifth, while making sure the name Ron Paul was never spoken. At the end of the clip Stewart shows a reporter who points this out, saying "We are talking about Christie and Palin who aren't even running, and nobody is talking about Paul who is doing good in the polls" to which the anchor got a douchebag smirk and said "Well if you get footage of Palin or Christie let us know, you can just keep the Paul stuff".
You can't fix a corrupt system by following the rules of that system, because they will simply change the rules to insure you can't win. This video on voting says it better than I can but the simple fact is at the end of the day they own the media, they control what the populace knows and is told, and they write the big fat checks to get the laws they want passed. To quote the late great George Carlin "Know why things never change? Because the owners of this country don't want change! They own you, they own everything worth having in this country and they do NOT want things to get better because its not good for business." and that is the truth.
You can protest in your little free speech zone that is far away from anybody that could be bothered, you can occupy until your hair turns grey and you look like just another one of the growing homeless, it just doesn't matter as the top 1% control the government, the money with both the Fed and Wall Street, and they control the media. Short of a full on violent revolution there is simply nothing you can do, all voting does is replace one puppet with another and the one you kicked out gets a cushy job with a lobbying firm so those you elect can see first hand the cushy position waiting for them if they play ball. Your vote means nothing, and unless your last name is Rothschild or Rockefeller your opinion means less than nothing.
Then you don't need more licenses, you need a shrink. and how can it possibly be "less hassle" than "stick in discs, go have a sammich" with Win 7? MSFT provides all the tools for free to make your own custom Win 7 images fully automated, you can install from disc or over the network, and no need for hacking SATA support into the OS like with XP.
The simple fact is when you can buy kits with 8gb of RAM for less than $250 off tiger sticking to an 11 year old creaky as hell OS is just insane. you are crippling the machine with an OS that is so old it doesn't know WTF to do with more than 3.2Gb of RAM and what it does deal with it badly misuses because its using the Win2K memory management where it'll still hit swap with tons of RAM free, its just not a good OS anymore. Hell if you said XP X64? Then maybe I could understand, its 64bit and is basically 2K3 in a workstation format, solid as a rock and great for a workstation, but installing XP on new systems? Unless you have serious legacy apps that won't run in XP mode that is just insanity.
I don't even know if suspensions would cut it friend, as they'd just send the second stringers onto the field with orders to take one for the team and stop the play. remember this stupid rule means ANY player can stop a play anywhere on the field, so even a lowly second stringer can just go for a linebacker's helmet and kill the play.
So the only way i think it would work is to give the team being unsportsmanlike some sort of scoring penalty to go with the suspension, like an automatic 3 points added to their opponents score. Considering we are talking about risking crippling or even killing the other player by ripping his helmet off in the middle of a play, often by grabbing the face mask and then just wrenching the guy whole head in an effort to get the helmet off? Then I think a 3 point penalty is very much in line for them not only trying to kill touchdown plays by using unsportsmanlike conduct but putting another player in serious danger just for the sake of ending a play.
Here is what I say to those that say "Oh you be hating because you don't like change!" I say "Really? Well then let's replace the steering wheel on your car with bulldozer steering sticks. What do you mean it doesn't work as well as what you had? You be hating because you don't understand our innovation! (TM)"
Because the simple fact that the apologists expect everyone to memorize dozens of weird key commands or tape up cheat sheets is EXACTLY like that, its making a change that renders the system WORSE than it was before and labeling anyone who points this out a Luddite.
But the simple fact is, just like I pointed out to the FOSS zealots that came before them, that if your users have to memorize piles of shit compared to what they could find in a couple of minutes completely on their own with a previous product? Then your design is NOT intuitive and NOT discoverable and deserves to fail, simple as that. There is no damned excuse for having to have fucking cheat sheets here in 2012, none at all. The fact that Win 8 and WinRT require cheat sheets just shows what a truly badly thought out piss poor design it is and why its doomed to fail, and as far as "You're a Luddite" bullshit? People had NO problem picking up Android or iOS and those were completely different than what came before, but they were intuitive, discoverable, and with just a small amount of play time anybody who had never touched one could be using it without frustration.
Its ironic that they keep showing the video of the 5 year old on WinRT, all that proves in my mind is only a 5 year old is gonna just sit there and poke random shit until they get the results they want, the rest won't waste their time on such a bad design.
OMFG did you just compare the MIT squatter to John The baptist? You did! I'm sorry folks but if this doesn't show what kind of batshit mentality this guy inspires i don't know what does.
If ANYBODY other than RMS said or pulled the shit he did, calling things he doesn't like "sins" and acting like he is the fucking pope while eating his toe gunk they would be labeled what their behavior obviously suggests they are...an Internet Troll. That is what he is, he starts flamewars wherever he goes for refusing to use anything but his cultish language and making it all into a battle between God (him) and Satan (all those that don't believe the same as him) and does NOTHING but divide and turn rational meaningful debate into an impossibility.
But when you compare that fricking hippie douchebag to John the baptist? Either you don't know your history very well or you need to get some fucking help.
Wow, way to pick apart the strange post! The only thing I would add is even Adobe has abandoned mobile flash so I really wouldn't call having a soon to be dead flash port to be a "feature".
And I have to wonder if this is some new twist on the classic shilling MSFT has been pushing for WinRT because I've noticed a couple of posts lately all over the place where they gush about the Surface and WinRT...while they talk about how they own an iPad. I don't know, is that supposed to give them "cred" somehow? that if an iPad owner who doesn't actually own a Surface brags about the Surface then it must be good?
One thing is for sure, I'd hate to be handed the bill that MSFT must be racking up on the pro shilling as you can take a line from any of the real gushing WinRT or Win 8 posts, slap it into Google, and find that just like a spam email somebody has posted that word for word on dozens of tech sites across the web. Its like they think if they can turn the geeks around with shilling and astroturfing then Win 8 and RT won't be a VistaBomb.
And believe me, I'm NOT the kind that uses words like shill and astroturf lightly, because I know you can find rabid fanbois for just about any product ever made, hell they have a fan club for the Zune. But when you can take a chunk of the text and find out like the Nigerian Prince it has been plastered all over the web? Then somebody is getting paid to do some serious product selling. You name the tech site, ZDNet,Slashdot, OSNews, The Reg, they are ALL seeing these posts over and over and over. Does MSFT think we are really THAT stupid? Or are they just hiring lazy ad companies that recycle too much?
And HOW many libraries are in the average Linux distro again? This is why the whole "let the devs do it" thing falls apart because you quickly end up with more work than your average distro is gonna be able to do. You name the distro and we'll go to the bug tracker and see how many bugs they have over 2 years old, is it because they don't care? Nope, its because they only have so many hours in the day and way too much on their plate so more and more falls through the cracks.
So I'm sorry but this is one of those areas where the math just don't work, there are simply too many libraries to allow for QA and QC so this needs to change. If you don't then you have to deal with the dev who maintains libfoo pushing changes that end up causing multiple programs to break which just makes the whole ecosystem look bad. I mean when is the last time you heard of an update to Windows or OSX killing Firefox? By having too much relying on shared libraries you make it all the easier to break.
But how could anybody that has ever looked at GFWL think that MSFT of all companies could run a successful appstore catering to gamers? I mean good lord folks, all they had to do was rip off Valve and the PHBs even managed to cock THAT up, not only is the UI horrible, the client buggy, but you go to look for a PC game in the PC client running on a PC for a series you already have at least one of the games of, and what does it show you? 9 pages of games for the X360! Because some PHB I'm sure trotted out a PPT at a meeting and said "Herpa derp metrics X360 herpa derpa push product derpa derp."
I mean give me a break, if anything Windows gaming has flourished in SPITE of MSFT, not because of, and their frankly terrible UI choices and consistent mobile flops should have given anyone designing games serious pause before porting to that platform. Anybody that is smart I'm sure will wait for WinRT to crack double digits or at least see if its gonna end up another abandoned platform like WinPhone 7. Have some common sense man!
But thanks to stupid rulings the league actually encourages dangerous behavior. look up "ripping off helmet" on YouTube to see how many guys have had the helmets ripped off recently, there are some where it looks like the guy's head is gonna come off along with the helmet but that don't matter to a player because thanks to that stupid rule you can stop a touchdown run cold, even if you are nowhere near the ball carrier, by simply ripping the helmet off ANY player on the opposing team.
I mean sure they hit them with fines and penalties but so what? When your team is only down by 6 and every game counts towards the playoffs and it looks like the other guy is gonna score all you have to do is yank that helmet off to kill the play from anywhere on the field. look it up for yourself friend, there are plays where you'll see no less than 2 or 3 guys ALL going for the helmets to stop the play, stupid rulings like this frankly encourage the players to go for the dangerous move as those that do it get a serious in game advantage over those that don't.
No because again he tries to frame every discussion into a "battle of good VS evil" in which he is the sole arbiter of what is listed as good and what is evil, like he is a religious figurehead.
You simply can't have a rational debate on the merits of an issue when somebody calls you a "sinner" because they are simply trying to enflame, no different than an Internet Troll and that is RMS in a nutshell. he labels all that don't follow HIS beliefs as evil sinners, and like some cult leader only HE can lead you to "the one true way". Again this completely derails conversations and does nothing but to divide the audience, but RMS doesn't care about that because he is "good" and you are "evil" and that is that. As the head of Red Hat noted "RMS treats his friends as his enemies" because he believes in NO discussion, NO compromise or debate, its strictly the way of St iGNUcious or the highway, which is why we need to stop giving press to the loonie because he makes the entire FOSS movement look like religious nuts.
But don't you see? That is part of the problem, the DoD and the MIC are so in bed together that they make these tests a bad joke! They test it in perfect weather, not too hot, not too cold, on some nice green grass covered testing range, with a target that they know EXACTLY what its height, speed, and direction are gonna be then they say this "proves" the thing is capable when in reality you are more likely to win the powerball than to get those exact conditions in combat.
I'll never forget what they did for the Phalanx CIWS "tests", they had it on a single ship, in perfectly calm water on sunny days, with a single target that would be coming in on a known trajectory and at a known speed...what EXACTLY does this prove? Nothing, that's what it proves, it proves nothing! it would be like proclaiming you had made the perfect sniper rifle because the shooter hit a 5 foot target from 1 foot away. I mean look at the ocean, lots of weather shifts, often choppy seas, and in practically every battle I ever heard of you have multiple ships on the water and multiple targets coming in, so the "test" was about as worthless as it could possibly be. Sure enough when actual conditions are used it was found the Phalanx CIWS got scores as low as 30% depending on the weather and the waves.
So its NOT that they run into some unforeseen condition, although one would have a hard time explaining how nobody was testing for conditions seen in the middle east with it being such a hotspot, no its the fact that they test NOTHING in their supposed battle simulations, because they put so many favorable conditions out there for the weapon being tested it would be damned hard to fail much less find any real weaknesses with the weapon. that is why I find it VERY telling when they say a weapon failed testing, because with the DoD and MIC in cahoots that means even with them rigging the test like crazy it STILL couldn't pass so it has to be an uber shitty design to not pass the Mickey mouse tests the DoD approves of.
That is what I think is fricking hilarious, the Win 8 apologists can have their dialog replaced by the hardcore Linux zealots and frankly few would know the difference.
You wanna REALLY piss 'em off? Here is what I do when they start all their "WinKey + blah blah blah" crap, I simply post "So I'm supposed to print cheat sheets from my users now to paste up beside the computer? What is this, 1986?" ohhh boy watch the cursing fly, because that is EXACTLY what they are expecting the users to do in a nutshell, in the age of GUIs they are expecting users to tape up cheat sheets like we did in the age of DOS and WordStar. And if that don't highlight what a megafail this OS is, well i don't know what would.
Well anybody who couldn't look at the painfully pathetic WinRT numbers and realize it would be best to wait and see if it gains momentum or turns into another Megaflop like WinPhone 7 (I'm betting the later myself) frankly deserves to lose money, because it is foolish to spend 10,000 pounds to port something for such a small userbase whom you don't even know are gonna be willing to buy apps or not!
We are talking about a company with a history of mobile flops, trying to force their flagship OS onto a platform where the majority of their software won't run, and on top of that they are charging iPad money for the thing...who couldn't smell the stench of fail from a mile away? Did this guy do the same retarded move for the Playbook and the Touchpad? No? Then why in the hell did he think that the same stupid move that didn't work for two huge corps like RIM and HP would magically work just because MSFT stuck their name on it? Especially after seeing the horrible numbers WinPhone 7 put up?
I'm sorry but this dumbass deserves to lose money, he picked a widely panned OS from a company with a history of mobile failure and then whined because surprise! Selling an app on a flop platform don't make money. Well no shit next you'll be telling me those guys that spent lots of money porting to the Touchpad and Playbook didn't break even. If this isn't a double facepalm moment I don't know what is, one facepalm simply isn't enough.
I think EVERYBODY is missing the point, which is RMS refuses to accept the fact that the GPL simply doesn't work in all situations and Canonical is going broke.
Does anybody think that Canonical WANTED to do this? They did it because they simply can't get the economies of scale required to make enough money with a Linux desktop product to keep the lights on, simple as that. Whether anybody likes it or not it has been proven time and again there is ONLY 3 ways to make money using the GPL model, 1.- Support contracts, worthless for desktops because too few buy 'em, 2.- Selling hardware, worthless for desktops because thanks to the trialware Windows Home isn't costing them anything so they can't get squat from the OEMs and canonical isn't gonna get the economies of scale to compete in the razor thin cutthroat hardware market, and 3.- the tin cup model which Canonical has been doing for several months on their download page and found too few give enough to keep the place going.
But why anybody listens to RMS anymore is beyond me when its so obvious he hates anybody making a cent on FOSS. Even the head of Red Hat said of RMS "He treats his friends as his enemies" and he'll even backtrack on his own words if you find a way to make money, for example when asked how software developers were supposed to survive giving away their software several years ago RMS said "They should charge for documentation", yet when software developers stopped including their docs under the GPL, the ONLY way to actually sell documentation when the GPL has a redistribution clause, then RMS came out against the devs and said "Documentation should be free!".
The guy is a failed developer whose only two projects, eMacs and GCC, were both forked AWAY from him, he is a self proclaimed "squatter at MIT" who has admitted that he doesn't even surf the net and has demonstrated ever increasingly bizarre behavior, such as just walking out of interviews where a reporter dares not to use "his language" in the matter he proscribes and of course the infamous "pulling off his socks and eating toe funk in the middle of the stage during a lecture" so WHY pray tell does anybody still listen to him?
Just because the man did something good 30+ years ago doesn't make his words today insightful, especially not in light of the fact he seems to have an open hatred of anybody that dares make their living off of FOSS, probably because he so utterly failed to do so himself. Seriously folks stop giving the loonie press, he really isn't a good spokesman for FOSS. Speak to Torvalds, Raymond, Perens, any of the above would be much more insightful and enlightening than speaking to the crazy squatter.
