Do NOT go for it. Its the same mess we saw when HDDs and DVD burners first came out, it took a good 6 years before HDDs became really reliable, around 4 for burners. Yeah and by the time the courts get done reaming them they'll be paying twice what Google offered. Courts REALLY don't like it if you just blow them off like that.
If Apple were smart they'd negotiate, after all as we saw from the article the other day they aren't even paying 5% tax and are one of the biggest companies ON THE PLANET, so risking getting royally screwed by the courts is NOT a smart move.
You watch, Apple is gonna keep pushing their luck and the courts are gonna end up ruling they have to pay something like 6% PLUS back fees PLUS Google's lawyers fees, just for keeping the court tied up for so long. Two and a quarter percent is pretty damned reasonable for the amount of patents we are talking here, so I think apple is really pushing their luck.
Yes because the age of the robber barons, where we had poor in the streets, was soooo much better.
Over and over again history has proven that the libertarian ideal benefits a handful while enslaving millions...no thanks. Hell I'd rather us become an old fashioned Soviet state than see the days of the robber barons return.
And none of that has a damned thing to do with tax evasion, simply because NEVER in history has anybody EVER come across or even thought, of a situation such as this!
We have reached the point where a billion dollars can go through 100+ countries and through a dozen shell corps in less than a minute, nobody EVER even imagined such a thing were possible, so naturally the laws haven't caught up and the megacorps are taking advantage of that and making sure they pay as close to nothing as possible.
But this does NOT make it right or just, and the only way I can see to fight this is to go nationalistic as China and India have done. put nasty high tariffs in place, make damned sure if they want access to your market they HAVE to play by your rules, and fight them on that front. Because as it is we are getting corporations that are so powerful and so wealthy they are literally economically stronger than many of the smaller nation states and as we have seen a million times throughout history that much wealth concentration is ALWAYS bad and ALWAYS has negative consequences.
Except they CAN'T go Open Source, which you and every dev on the damned planet refuse to fricking accept! Let me make this clear, there is PATENTED TECH in ALL graphics cards which they CAN NOT SHARE, not because they want to keep it closed, but because its connected with the DRM used in HDCP, which is the ONLY way the *.A.As will allow High Def video on the PC!
Besides why the fuck should they care WHAT the FOSS camps want when they've shown themselves to be hypocritical self serving douches? AMD did EXACTLY what you asked, did their sales go up? Not only did their sales NOT go up but every. damned. article. you see here on Linux has dozens posting 'LOL use Nvidia". yeah, great job fellas, make damned sure every company on the planet sees its a total waste to support your precious "FOSS ideals" because obviously you care so much about them.
So whether you like it or not they CAN NOT DO what you are asking, so instead of accepting this is reality and allowing Nvidia the hooks they need while writing their congressmen and trying to change the REASON why they can't open up the FOSSie devs...punish Nvidia by being douchebags and making sure everything they need is GPL V3 so they'll have to open up...which isn't possible for them to do, great job acting like 6 year olds guys.
So your choices are 1.-Accept that there are companies that HAVE TO be closed because of legal reasons, man up and work to change those reasons while accepting for the time being compromises will HAVE to be made, or 2.- Act like spoiled children and have little hissy fits and flip off companies and generally act like ADHD teens and make things worse for everyone...wanna guess which one the devs ALWAYS pick?
So waste mod points ALL you want, it won't change reality and reality is this: The FOSS team is having to work around OVER ONE THIRD of the hardware thanks to the fact AMD had to redact ALL of the video hardware from the specs and CAN NOT allow that to be open since it would risk breaking HDCP, Nvidia is in the same boat only worse because tesla and CUDA both use that very same hardware for GP-GPU, yet the FOSSie devs will break drivers rather than accept not everybody on the planet can open their code. NOW do you see why the ONLY times Linux has gotten anywhere is when someone, like say Google, took control away from the devs?
Except the "dirty little secret" of the industry is its NOT the cells dying that gets you, the controller dying is what bites you in the ass. if it was just the cells since when a cell fails it just ends up read only that wouldn't be so bad, but when the controller fails you flip the switch and...nothing. Not even the BIOS/UEFI detects the thing, its just gone.
That is why even though this article is a year old I'd urge those thinking of diving into SSD to read it, especially the comments where you see guy after guy getting bit in the ass by dead controllers. brand make a difference, OCZ being worst and Intel best, but ALL have this problem to a degree, and when it happens to you? Well lets just hope you have a VERY recent backup.
This is why I tell my customers there are some places SSDs make sense but NOT all. If its mobile, not mission critical, and you religiously stick to a backup schedule? No problem there, if its just an OS drive with the data on HDD? No problem there, just make sure you have recent disc images so you can just clone onto the replacement, but in anything mission critical, or for those that won't stick to a rigid backup schedule? then SSD is NOT the way to go, it'll bite them on the ass and leave them in a bad way.
They really need to come up with a second controller, one that will simply take over in the case of failure and leave the drive in a read only state. this would at least insure that when the main controller does fail you can get the data off, and its those failure rates that are keeping a lot of people (myself included) from switching.
Thanks for the link, which just proves what I have been saying for years, which is you CAN NOT build ANY commercial software and have ANY interaction with FOSS. This is why Canonical is doomed, why Valve will fail with Steam on Linux, because unless you are willing to suck down the koolaid and be a 100% FOSS company the devs will go out of their way to fuck you and break your stuff.
There had been a split for years in the FOSS camp, with the pragmatists that wanted to give people a more open (but still usable) third choice in operating systems, and the ones I call "FOSSies" which treat RMS as a God and the GPL as their ten commandments and who don't care if its the most obtuse, fiddly, constantly broken mess on the planet as long as it remains "Pure to the ideology of the Open Source movement".
Now I think we are getting close to seeing a clear winner of the battle...and sadly its the FOSSie camp that is gonna end up torpedoing any chance Linux had at mainstream. I have no doubt Nvidia will give them a few more binary blobs, simply because they have a good deal of HPC customers that use Linux, but I have a feeling that many will wash their hands or do as AMD did and just hand them the specs and let the devs fall flat on their faces. Google had to fork Linux away from the devs to make Android, Valve I have a feeling will run into enough sabotage from the FOSSie devs they'll either make their own fork for the Steambox or maybe even go with one of the BSDs as Apple did, and once Canonical closes its doors most will just write Linux off as a fiddly obtuse PITA only good for those which believe in the FOSS "religion" and nobody else will care.
Its a shame, many of us retailers really don't like the direction MSFT is going, which makes them look more and more like an ersatz Apple, but its the FOSSies that make sure the damned thing just won't work by refusing to even recognize their "ideal" is physically unworkable. You have maybe 200 devs (probably closer to 50, but benefit, doubt, yada yada) that have the experience and skills required to do low level driver work, and over 100,000+ drivers, oh and Linus and pals constantly fucking with subsystems and causing major breakage while they futz. Logically anyone with a functioning brain could see that 200 guys can't support 100,000 drivers with ANY level of quality, yet all we here is "We don't need no steenkin ABI, the devs can handle it" when the math shows its impossible.
So things will continue to suck, drivers that work in foo will be broken in bar and maybe not fixed in bar+5, if they EVER get fixed, and retailers and most hardware ODMs will ignore Linux because you have to pay a dev team for the rest of the life of the hardware just to keep the damned drivers working, it sucks but thanks to the FOSSies MSFT could put out WinGoatse and it'll sell, because their alternative is a broken mess of an OS.
Bingo! Sharp pretty much has Apple over a barrel and if they were smart they'd make it clear if they don't see better prices they'll have to deal with the cheap junk screens, wouldn't help Apple's "top quality" image if their screens start dying left and right.
Although I think they'd be better off buying Sharp directly, if they weren't a Japanese corp I'd call it a done deal. We all know how much Japan protects their businesses, i can't see one of their major players selling to an American corp would go over well.
But one way or another Apple HAS to have those screens, with Samsung royally pissed at them they simply don't have anywhere else to go for great quality screens.
Are you being obtuse on purpose, or are you just a damned fanboi? Because you can NOT be seriously comparing AN EMBEDDED SOLUTION where the OEMs control ALL of the hwardware AND the code to an actual general purpose operating system, can you? Surely to God you can't be making such a pathetic comparison? That is like saying "Linux is ready for grandma's laptop because her router runs Busybox"...yeah, great analogy there, a hardened embedded OS that for 99.995% of the population will NEVER change one single bit as far as drivers, OS, or underlying software for the life of the device...yeah that REALLY compares to getting a couple of new kernels a year, and dozens if not hundreds of major subsystems changed yearly which will leave you vulnerable and out of date if you don't keep up.
I've heard of "moving the goalposts" but you aren't even talking about the same sport, next time try to at least make an argument that can hold SOME kind of logical sense, mmmkay?
That is like saying WinRT has been around for decades since Windows 1.0 came out 30 years ago. I draw you to the very first line of TFA: " Samba4 is an ambitious, yet achievable, reworking of the Samba code." Whenever you hear the words "ambitious and reworking" the words that SHOULD pop into your mind immediately is "buggy as fuck" and I don't give a damned WHO wrote the code you NEVER use words like ambitious unless you are doing some serious flying without a net and are trying to warn folks things aren't gonna be business as usual.
It all depends on how stripped down the Android version is compared to Cryengine proper.
The elephant in the room though is how you are gonna get the driver stability and performance out of Linux, thanks to the totally fucked up relationship Torvalds and the devs have with GPU manufacturers (Yeah I'm sure flipping off Nvidia because they won't jump through your little hoops is the mature way to handle dealings with a billion dollar corporation that millions of your users depend on, smooth move there) because there is a reason guys like Yahtzee at ZP make jokes about how Cryengine is "the altar that gaming nerds make sacrifices to the gaming gods upon" because that thing will slam the living shit out of even modern systems, so every drop of performance is gonna count. Between Nvidia just ripping out the guts of the system and replacing them with their own fork and AMD stuck between a rock and a hard place (since they can give the docs to the graphics part of the chip, but NOT the UVD parts since that controls HDCP) its really not a great time for Linux on the gaming front.
Maybe Valve will solve the problems by simply forking Linux for their Steambox project, that would probably be the only way to get true unity and focus on gaming since you have so many devs working on different subsystems its gotta be like herding cats to get them focused, but until then trying to turn Linux into a truly solid gaming platform is gonna royally suck. We have seen companies in the past try, Loki and Cedega just off the top of my head, but Linux changes so damned quick when it comes to internals...well you just can't keep up. By the time the product is ready for shelves they've come out with 3 new kernels, a couple of major subsystem changes, the pace is just nuts.
So I just don't see it working long term unless someone does like Google and just forks the whole thing away from the devs, you've got to have a stable foundation to build on and Linux is frankly at such a breakneck pace of change right now that is practically impossible.
The problem is it has become like the days of the old west, remember the old westerns how the bandits would head for the Mexican border and once they were across not worry about shit because all the border mess kept the rangers from giving chase?
Well now with electronic banking you can do that on a planetary scale in seconds. NO country can "close the loopholes" as another suggested because we are not talking about the laws of ONE country, we are talking about the laws of ALL countries as they can bounce a billion dollars through a dozen nation s in less than a second.
Never forget the words of Thomas Jefferson, who tried to warn us of the dangers of mercantilism: "Merchants have no country. The mere spot they stand on does not constitute so strong an attachment as that from which they draw their gains." In the end they don't care if the economy of their "home" country collapses, they can have their funds moved in seconds and have offices in dozens of countries. There is no loyalty or patriotism to country, just profits.
Its not a personal page, its simply a list, with links, to truly show stopping bugs, bugs that go back YEARS and have not been fixed.
But if you want to ignore evidence go right ahead, it won't be any different than how the OEMs and pretty much everyone else ignores Linux. Its been free for 20+ years, yet you see its numbers going nowhere, and no Android is NOT Linux because if you are gonna count that then you might as well say that Apple is a FOSS OS since it uses a BSD kernel. Google controls Android, you have no say, they don't accept submissions, they own the OS.
But if you want to know why Linux goes nowhere there is the list, you can follow the links and see over 200! show stopping bugs, not rare stuff either, serious problems with all three major graphics systems, wireless, sound, the list is huge. Linus refuses to admit there are problems, refuses to change, when even a Red Hat dev says the current system is broken which is of course why Dell hides Linux on the back pages, tries to warn users away, and has to run their own repo just to keep the fricking updates from crapping on the drivers. Great job there guys, can't even update the system without breaking drivers.
How is it silly? They sold 8 tracks for years after it quit being mainstream, didn't make it any less of a passe format. The desktop will not die IMHO but it will NEVER be the center of everyone's day like it used to be.
You'll have PC gamers, and workstations...and that's pretty much it. Joe and Jane will end up on a tablet, maybe with a BT keyboard when they want to send an email, but if you look at what the average user is doing? Lets take my GF for example, I just recently replaced her late model P4 for an Athlon triple. What does she use it for? She prints pictures, she goes to FB and plays her little games, she burns CDs.,..that's it. She can probably keep that PC for the rest of the decade without having a single problem.
So I'm sorry but slapping hundreds of MILLIONS in fines on MSFT now? In 2012? its a shakedown, that is ALL it is. And again mark my words, they WILL end up going after Google, and Apple, and Samsung, and HTC, etc because nanny government NEVER gets smaller, ONLY bigger.
It doesn't really matter WHAT you put on the basement machine, the point was this guy is throwing away over a grand a pop on fricking laptops...to SIT ON HIS COUCH!!!!
You do NOT need some uber road warrior gamer laptop to sit your lazy ass on a couch and get real work done, not when you could use ANY bargain basement laptop to do the basic email and office stuff and just remote into a desktop, which will be faster, cheaper, have more storage, and better performance, and he still won't have to get his lazy ass off the couch!
I don't know about you pnutjam, but these yo yos that think they have to do every. single. thing. on a portable device...and then NEVER GO ANYWHERE are fricking insane! He must give OEMs a hard on when he walks through the door, he spends money like water, doesn't check the specs, doesn't read reviews, and he's never gonna be away from an outlet so he won't even know if the battery is shite or not! Talk about a dream sucker...errr customer!
Hell they were selling AMD quad kits just the other day on Tiger for $159, that's for 3.3GHz with 4Gb of RAM and a DVD burner and nice case, all you had to do was throw in whatever drives you wanted. And that system would SMOKE his laptop simply because every damned thing in a laptop is built for lower heat and battery life.
So he could solve ALL his problems by simply getting a decent desktop and just remoting into the thing, but no, because I won't agree that doing things the STUPID way is a smart idea he instead calls me an asshole. But at least I can sit on my couch, do every single thing he does and more, and my netbook cost a grand total of $350. I'd say that makes him a classic ID10T error if ever I saw one, don't you think?
THIS, this right here, is why I can't understand why MSFT is blowing billions jumping into the shark tank that is ARM powered mobile devices. Frankly Apple is the ONLY one making reliable money, the rest are caught in a race to the bottom, HTC has had some bad quarters, so has Samsung, the rest are looking ready to lose their shirts. the chips are changing too fast, they have too much stock, and frankly nobody looks at anything but the price...except for Apple.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, even in a downturn Apple will make out like bandits because they are NOT a tech company that makes fashionable devices, they are a fashion company that happens to work in tech. This is actually a GOOD thing for Apple fans, just look at lines around the block and people paying crazy markup for Air Jordans. Fashion seems immune when it comes to downturns for the most part, and even when article after article bitches about their memory prices...they keep right on buying.
So any company trying to jump into that blood soaked shark tank is frankly more than a little insane, and anybody that thinks they'll make iMoney with Android or WinRT are frankly delusional. Mark my words you'll see dual core 7 inch tablets for $50, the prices will drop so low it'll practically be throwaway devices. The only one that will be making consistent profits will be Apple, and this is coming from someone who doesn't even own an iPod.
Thanks Basil but it won't matter, they have this "white VS black" concept so locked into their minds no matter how much data you show them they'll just go "la la la, you must be a shill! La la la you're one of THEM!" and continue with their fantasy.
I think its sad myself, a site supposedly for nerds yet something as banal and trivial as a marketing slogan apparently works just as well on certain parts of nerd culture as it does on 16 year old kids. It doesn't matter to this type how many dirty deals or doing the exact same thing the other guys are doing is found on Google, in fact here is a page listing them, complete with internal emails, but none of that will count you see because Google is "their team" and "does no evil" so they won't believe their lying eyes over the marketing slogan...fascinating if you ask me, this kind of rampant refusal to see reality over one's ballclub like worship of some company should probably be studied, its most interesting.
Oh please! The triple E strategy actually requires planning and thought...from Steve Ballmer? Are you serious?
Here is the "New MSFT Strategy" under Steve Ballmer..."What does Apple do? Well we'll do that too, only it'll be half assed, half baked, and poorly thought out...yeah that'll work"...Look at how pathetic the apps on Win 8 and WinRT are, think Jobs would have allowed that shit? Hell think Gates would have allowed that shit?
Ballmer is a disaster, MSFT is a trainwreck, they are throwing crap at a wall and hoping something sticks. if half assed ripoff of Apple don't work they are gonna go for FULL ASS ripoff of Apple. Of course this is completely ignoring Apple is a premium brand, and MSFT is about as "premium" as a 76 Pinto, Apple has good resale value to make up for part of the high price, used MSFT crap is worthless, yeah EEE from Ballmer? That would require planning and thought, never happen with the sweaty one in the big chair. Instead what we get is one half baked Apple ersatz after another, Zune, Kin, Sidekick, WinPhone 7, now WinRT and MSFT branded WinPhones...yeah because the carriers don't ALREADY HATE YOU because you bought Skype...what a fucking moron Ballmer is! He is gonna have warehouses full of this shit, just as he had crate after crate of feces brown Zunes.
Uhhh..did you read the GP I was responding to? he was making this out to be A NOBLE ACT, like stealing "Hot teen ass bangers" is some sort of act of heroism!
Again what this assclown did was IGNORE the literally thousands upon thousands of 100% free, help yourself ALL you want video sites, instead paid out for the PREMIUM content of some site, and then promptly loaded the contents of that site onto TPB.
Again this douchebag is NO different than Razr1911 and the other hacking groups, and if you'll look those types have had the legal hammer dropped on them as well. What this guy did was NOT simply "copy" 10 movies, he made damned sure that since once a movie ends up in a swarm and a single copy is completed its out there forever that the $200,000 that company spent on those movies (going by what your typical Vivid or Dark Bros film costs times ten movies) is gone, poof.
so waste modpoints ALL you want, the asshole got what he deserved. this punishment is supposed to let people know if they pay for a site they can't just upload its contents to TPB and walk away. May I remind you and everyone else they let him DOWNLOAD their content WITHOUT DRM? Isn't that what EVERYBODY here has been whining for? Well next time you are bitching because you can't get content in anything but a DRMed pain in the ass format, make sure to thank this douchebag, its guys like him that make sure we can't have nice things.
That is because they subscribe to the church of Supply Side Jesus and every time you hurt the stock numbers or pay capital gains you make Supply Side Jesus cry.
So if Supply Side Jesus wanted that frog saved then dammit he'd have made them profitable to raise! I mean do you hear about cows, chickens, or minks going extinct? Of course not because they were blessed by Supply Side Jesus with the miraculous gift of exploit-ability!
Insightful? Really? WTF people, i know a bunch of pirates hang here, but give me a fucking break! This IS NO DIFFERENT that those crackers that buy the latest shooter on release day, crack it, and slap it on TPB. We have all seen as more and more games are released for the consoles and NOT the PC and its because of shit like this.
In BOTH cases there is NO excuse, because in both the case of PC games and in the case of porn there is more free content than you could possibly ever want so in both cases you are just being douchebags. And this is coming from someone who thinks the public has the moral obligation to fucking ignore ALL copyrights that go a single day beyond what the founding fathers originally wrote, but give me a fucking break, this ain't some noble thing this little shit did, its just plain old theft and he deserved to get burned.
Sadly I would probably vote for the later, Apple has been sticking the letter "i" in front of common words since the iPod and yes I know iMac came first but outside of networking geeks Mac is an Apple word, not a common everyday noun like pod and pad and phone, so I'm sure their argument came down to "Hey sticking the "i" on front of common words is OUR thing!" while ignoring that just because you are the current 800 pound gorilla doesn't mean you can co-op any copyright anywhere that has the letter "i" in front of a common term.
Oh please, you are just trying to justify being LAZY, that's all. That's like justifying tablets by saying "I can watch youTube while taking a shit"...damn, get your big ass off the couch already!
And never heard of remoting in? Sheesh, kids these days. i can take this $350 netbook I have and do anything your i7 can do only BETTER because I can access a fully powered desktop with it anywhere I want. hell you can even slap a wireless HDMI on the set and can use your big ass TV like the sweetest monitor you ever seen, and it don't make a diddly damned where the fricking box is!
Like I said, sucker born every minute...man I bet the OEMs loove you! Buys a thousand dollar laptop, does squat for homework, buys a junker, hell you are their fricking wet dream! Word of advice, build a decent desktop, set it up in the basement or wherever with remote access, you can then put the printer whereever the fuck you want, hell i got one customer has his in the hall closet, then just get one of them $400 AMD quad laptops. that will give you plenty of power when you are actually OUT of the house, and the unit will let you offload all the heavy duty work to the desktop...voila! Best of everything. hell get a wireless keyboard and mouse and you can use the laptop as a thin client to remote to the basement and blast the whole thing over HDMI onto your big set, never have to get up then.

I'm sure you can find an American site that will ship to you, may not be cheap, but if there is money to be made somebody will make it.
But then again this is the same company that tried to sue not one but two companies for daring to have an Apple for a logo even though their Apple logos were nothing like Apple's nor was their businesses in any way comparable to Apple, so why am I not surprised?
