Uhhh...citation please? because I've found if you leave them in a cool dry dark place frankly the DVDs just last and last. i can still slap in the very first DVD I ever burned, its an old 1x DVD with pretty much every game that was on Home Of The UnderDogs, and it still reads just fine, hell so do my ancient CDs as well although I've been tossing them as of late as I already have them already backed up to DVD. In fact the ONLY burnt DVDs I've had trouble reading were some shitty staples brand i got on Black Friday a couple of years back and some LiLo discs I again got cheap. but any of the decent brands or hell even the Amazon store brands seem to last just fine as long as kept away from heat and sun.
So while myself and my customers use USB drive for many things honestly there is nothing wrong with DVDs as a backup medium as long as you take proper care of them.
That's why a copy of spinrite is your friend, set that sucker on level 3, refresh the surfaces, and if the drive is dying that'll kill the bitch dead QUICK. Just let it run overnight, the drive will be so foobarred by morning they can have you run whatever, it won't matter. Wish I could find a tool that would kill drives as well as spinrite as there are a few of the newer drives it don't like but so far nothing kills a dying drive like spinrite can.
I feel your pain friend, for me it was the Samsung drives that rocked and now they are gone to crappy Seagate. I put Samsung EcoDrives in some seriously rough conditions like construction trailers and warehouse floors and no matter how much abuse they just kept on running. When i heard they were gonna sell out to Seagate I bought some 1Tbs and 2Tbs up (the ONLY time I've ever been on the right side of a price fluctuation) so while i'm good personally that don't help my customers none. Does anybody know how the Toshiba drives are? or where to get them? Because with WD you seem to have to buy Enterprise to get anything worth having and Seagate is like playing HDD roulette.
Actually YOU sir are being lied to. F&F was abandoned by Bush and then picked up when Hillary Clinton tried to claim that it was American guns supplying the cartels when the data showed the VAST majority of their guns (which is still true to this day BTW) was coming from former Soviet bloc nations through South America. Now since Hillary has been on record for years that she doesn't believe the second amendment gives American the right to own shit, just the militia AKA National Guard they then went about trying to make their facts fit the story. Several former FBI agents even called it a "false flag event" to justify pushing for more gun regulations.
If you like short stories try to find a copy of any of the "Best sci fi writers of" paperbacks, especially the 60s and 70s. While many of the authors may be folks you've never heard of a lot of the choices that went into those books were picked by the greats like Asimov, Heinlein, Bradbury, so they tend to reflect those authors favorite themes. Those picked by Bradbury were often futuristic, Heinlein with moral/social issues wrapped in a sci/fi cloak, frankly nearly all of those paperbacks were quite good. The also had a "Best horror writers of" and "Best fantasy writers of" and all were great. They aren't easy to find but you'd be surprised how many treasure troves of out of print books there is out there in places like estate sales, flea markets, yard sales, some truly great books if you can find them.
The only one which I can still remember by name is "Old Friend of the family", sorry i can't remember the author but its been 20 years. Great gothic style horror about an old Romanian whose granddaughter is brutalized by a gang so she calls in a "very old favor"...a debt owed by a vampire to their family for over 800 years. Great story.
Blowdose? What are you, 9? And since you must be too young to remember your history WinNT which came out in 1993 (Man has it been that long? Seems like yesterday I was supporting NT 3.x and NT 4) had the BSD network stack until MSFT wrote their own for Win2K and BSD most certainly DID have socket connectivity so you are beyond wrong and into completely off base. And if you are talking win9X as the Linux guys point out with their OS it was just a DE over a separate core, in this case DOS, and one of the nice things about it was you could simply choose which portions you wanted to run and just FYI from Win95 SR2 one could use Winsock which again was based on BSD and did most certainly have socket support. Kids these days with not knowing their history, geez.
Actually I believe some of the APUs such as the Brazos platform is done by TSMC. Yes according to this link they inked a deal with TSMC to use their SOI process for Fusion APUs and since i can't find any links saying this deal was later canceled i have to assume that is what they did. Makes sense as TSMC has the experience with ATI GPUs and the whole point of Fusion is wedding the ATI GPU to various AMD CPUs such as Stars (Liano), Bobcat (Brazos) and Bulldozer (FX) and since the overall performance of those chips would depend on how well they could get the GPUs to come out since they can't really bin the GPUs like they normally do without ending up with a bazillion variations it makes sense they went with the one that has more GPU experience.
So does anybody have any REAL info on what's going on? What chips? What sockets? Is it only on server, or is desktop and mobile affected as well? Is it a one in a million bug or an easy to hit bug? Considering CPU bugs can go from the Pentium I "you'll likely never hit it" to the Phenom I quad "Good luck getting above 2.4GHz because the third core (Core 2) is buggy and unstable" there can be a pretty wide variance when it comes to odds. As someone who owns several AMD units and have sold even more some more info would be nice.
Frankly when we ALREADY have a government that has...1.-admitted to taking suspects on 'rendition rides" so they can torture them, 2.-waterboards, 3.-attempted to set up a false flag to take away your second amendment rights with "Fast & Furious" which led to dozens being murdered by guns provided by the US government to terrorists. 4.- Covered up child sex trafficking by a PMC that was trading 9 year old boys as party favors to seal deals and who had done the same trick in Kosovo a decade earlier with 11 year old girls.
Frankly I wouldn't trust the fucking United Snakes government to tell me its raining outside. If their own admitted actions aren't enough for you? Then I'm sorry but you are just too ignorant. Just the things they have admitted to should have caused several officials to be shot for treason if the laws of this country actually meant a damned thing anymore.
I gotta go with the AC on this one, as that stupid ass word is okay in politics where every damned thing is just a different degree of spin so "truthiness' can be appropriate but here I doubt its being done for some sort of spin, more likely its a classic case of "biggerer is betterer" and Lord knows we've seen that enough in society, everything from SUVs to Hollywood boomfests, so I have to say that stupid ass word just don't fit in this situation.
As for TFA? Meh I suppose its all pretty much relative and how much abuse your ears have taken on what sounds good or not to you anyway. Most here would probably gag if they picked up my MP3 player as its all 64k but after 30 years of playing rock bass with big ass amps combined with all the outside noise frankly when i'm out and about I can't tell any difference. Now of course inside is a different matter but i don't have a bunch of noise but even then anything from 192k through 320k sounds fine to me and i'm sure if you gave me a blind listening test i doubt i could tell the difference between lossless and 192k.
So why not just let folks choose from whatever size they want? Its not like the old days when we had to squeeze every bit of room out of our 10Gb HDDs, just give us 192k, 320k, and the 24bit 192khz and let us listen and decide for ourselves.
But there is a REALLY important question that needs to be asked here, which is "What are the REAL odds that a normal user will hit this?" I mean is it like the Pentium bug back in the day where unless you were working on some very specific math problems you'd never hit it in a million years, or is it like the Phenom I where even on BE chips you'd often have Core 2 BSOD the system if you went past 2.4GHz?
Because with all the problems AMD has had getting GloFlo up to speed the LAST thing they need is a chip recall, hell depending on the severity it could torpedo their profits for a year. Now TFA is probably about the most light on details we have seen in awhile but the fact he mentions 48 cores i can only assume he is talking Opteron. Does this effect the desktops? what about the mobile? AM3, or only the newer chips?
Without more information all I can go by is my own experience and so far slamming the hell out of AM3 and Brazos chips I haven't run into anything causing crashes, its all smooth sailing. So maybe someone who actually knows more details can fill us in?
Nice, but too geeky for most folks which is why I like the Nbox and Nbox HD. Most folks just can't get the hang of P2P but there are a bazillion places to get movies, Fred's has 10 packs of genre movies like horror or action for $8 a pop, Walmart has these huge bins of overstock DVDs for like $2 a pop. try something like Tipard DVD ripper sometime, its bloody brilliant! It has both Streams and CUDA support and is as simple as "insert movie, push button", hell your grandma could work that thing! Then all they have to do is drag and drop onto a USB hard drive, and plug the drive into the NBox, that's it. there is only one place to plug the thing in, nothing to screw up. the only catch is you have to give 'em full size drives as the Nbox doesn't have the watts to drive a laptop drive but hell those are cheaper anyway. And the controls on the Nbox are so simple a 6 year old could run the thing and i know that's true, a friend got one and loaded it up with kids vids, his 6 year old now looks at discs like you are retarded LOL!
So if you have any clueless friends or family give them an Nbox or Nbox HD, they'll look at you like you're a God.
Simple the USSA let the corps become so damned powerful that they spread like a cancer across the land, that's what. When you can have congressman stand there with a straight face and say there is nothing wrong with copyright terms even though most of Walt Disney's FIRST works, made when planes were made of cloth and antibiotics were just a dream, is STILL under copyright and will be long after anyone reading this is dead? Well you can just give it up chuck.
Frankly there is only one thing we can do now, and that is complete ignore the unjust laws and do everything we can to help our geek brethren to create the darknet, so that we can abandon the web to the giant corporate home shopping network they have every intention of turning it into. Mark my words they'll go after the indie labels and artists next, they'll use SLAPPs to bury them alive in lawsuits. That is because its all about CONTROL and not any kind of theft, they want the ability to control everything you see and hear and lock the world behind a paywall. With their endless copyrights I'm sure they have every combination of the 12 note western scale already copyrighted somewhere. as soon as the new album is done with my band I intend to put it everywhere i possibly can but frankly i wouldn't be surprised if we get SLAPPed, even though its just three guys with real instruments and no sampling.
And don't think boycotts or not helping yourselves will do ANY good, as they'll just use PPT math against you. They'll show the politicians a PPT that says "Our figures indicate that since we made X last year we should have made X + Y this year and we didn't! It must be those pirates!" and they'll get more power and control. Its a great "heads i win tails you lose' scam and sadly there is nothing we can do about it. so help yourselves friends, if you like an artist go see their show, that's probably the ONLY money they'll be seeing anyway.
Oh, have we not met? Hi, we're the United States, where any corp can make any word mean anything they want as long as they are cromulent enough to cut the right checks to the right people or even better just buy the person in charge of making regulations on their industry. its the effulgent thing to do! AT&T, now with more electrolytes!
Easy way to find out. Hey are any of the 3 guys that have a WinPhone here? Hey could you load up Sketch Match for us and draw a sweaty monkey and see if it gives you a picture of Ballmer? i know its not a pretty sight but its for science, so be a pal, take one for the team. Of course i'd STRONGLY suggest you do NOT write "Take one for the team" in Sketch Match as the images you get back...well you just don't want those.
More likely they'll make you sit through 3 or 4 "messages from our sponsors' before they give you the captcha, you know, since you won't be able to block it and all.
Sorry, tried it. tried the dump mem on close trick, tried every trick and hack i could find on the web, no joy. I truly think its either their optimizations or someone isn't setting the flags right on the compiler as I've noticed that certain AMD sockets it absolutely hates with a passion, 754, 939, pretty much everything below AM2+. Oh and it really doesn't care for the Brazos platform or bobcat APUs either. When i can fire up a circa 2004 Pentium 4 and get less memory usage and CPU hogging than a brand new AMD APU that tells me the problem is FF NOT the PC. As I said I tried several other browsers and ONLY the FF derivatives showed the same CPU centric behavior. anything based on Webkit or Chromium didn't seem to care which CPU you ran it on.

I KNEW it, its them damned Ruskies again! Fall of the wall my ass, its all a commie plot to let our guards down! We should have listened to the greatest American that had ever lived, General George Patton, hired them damned Nazis sons of bitches, put their asses in Sherman tanks and pointed their asses towards Moscow! That would have taught 'em who's boss! Now even our computers aren't safe from them damned reds!
Well that and the fact that the steel used to make both the rivets and parts of the ship weren't of the best quality and were found later to become brittle easily which meant a good whack and rivets would pop. Any way you slice it that ship was pretty well screwed from the second it slid out of drydock, it was just a matter of time. Remember folks this thing was built at the turn of the 20th century, our knowledge of metallurgy and the effect of different levels of impurities on metal strengths simply wasn't that great back then.
Since the elite only need about 8% max of the population? lets face it the thing nobody wants to mention is for the first time in history technology has pretty much made most peasants completely worthless. With robots and automation you can have entire factories run by just a couple of low skilled button pushers and even in the tech sector you are seeing the rise of smart servers and other gear that simply tells some monkey when to replace a failing part so the billions of peasants you have now simply are no longer required. When your average IQ is 101 and the jobs that can provide more than a "living on a couch" wage require a 140 IQ you are playing a game of musical chairs with more and more unable to find a seat.
Hell I'd argue a good 30%-40% of the jobs in the USA are "make work" that if it weren't for government subsidies wouldn't exist. Take Walmart and McDonald's for examples, Walmart gives a training video on how to apply for food stamps because without government subsidies nobody could live on what they pay. Don't think that if forced to pay a living wage they wouldn't replace many of them with machines? Self checkouts and robotic stockers could get rid of a bunch of them. And what about fast food? Do you think that those jobs couldn't be trivially done by an automated assembly line? Not exactly hard to imagine simply pressing a few buttons on a screen and having an assembly line "build" the order and drop it out a slot.
So as long as they had a nice well stocked hole to hide in I could see a plague or asteroid being very useful for the elite, it would "thin the herd" so to speak. We have 7 billion plus and with automation you could probably do just as well with less than a billion total, the peasants simply aren't needed for their labor anymore and are simply a drain upon the system.
Sadly this is only true up to a point, see the Arab Springs. Why do I say sadly? Because you have a 50/50 chance of things getting REALLY nasty, think Germany in 34. Considering how many "FEMA camps" have been built in the last 5 years i have a feeling the elite are planning on the second option when the peasants get too rowdy. of course they think they can kowtow the population but the word "camp" will forever have the word concentration attached and then its on like Donkey Kong. Then you run the very real risk of full scale civil war in a nation that has nukes spread all over the landscape and which has national guard outposts practically everywhere with seriously heavy firepower.
Sadly I doubt you'll see a civil handing over of power like you did in the former USSR and frankly that should scare the shit out of anybody. you have soldiers taking oaths to turn against their government and guys piling up weapons all over the place, my guess is within 10 years they won't be able to print enough money to placate the poor unemployed masses and when the actual unemployment rate hits 40% (which it will, you just can't outsource the entire manufacturing out of the country without having unemployment reach epic proportions) then we'll see what happens when a nuclear superpower has an Arab Spring.
I'm sorry but I live in the middle of what is known as "meth alley" which is a corridor that goes from the Mexican border up to Chicago. All you get here is corrupt, cronyism, nepotism, and the same old money over and over AND OVER. Hell half our cops live like fricking Scarface and the other half wouldn't dare say shit for fear of ending up like the last snitch which is common knowledge they "pulled a Fargo" on him, only the poor bastard was alive when they fed him into the chipper. They found the chipper in the river about a year later, by that time fish had cleaned it quite well.
The late great Bill Hicks nailed it years ago "Well i believe the puppet on the left shares MY beliefs, well I believe the puppet on the right has my interests at heart...wait a minute, there is one guy working BOTH puppets!". In my area its been the same families running things since the civil war, good luck changing something THAT embedded. Money that old can steal and deal all they want, they get streets named after them.
Damned Ruskies! I bet you're just laughing your asses off ain't ya? First we help you and the damned Limeys out in WWII only for you to get half of Europe, what did we get? Nothing, not a damned thing! Hell the tea swillers even stabbed us in the back and went with that Frog metric system! Then you build all these kick ass fighters for dirt cheap that can land on a fricking two lane while our MIC give us these technocrappers that have so many bugs you can't turn the damned things to the left without screwing up the stupid computers so now you can crank out a dozen SU27s for the cost of a single F35 and they still can't make the damned thing work!
We should have listened to our greatest Hero, the great General Patton, hired them damned Nazis, put their asses in Sherman tanks and rolled right into Moscow! Would have showed your asses THEN huh? Instead that pussy Truman gives it all back, hell we didn't even keep the car building Nazis, bet they wouldn't have built no damned pintos or k cars that's for damned sure!
The sad part to me is they don't even try to be subtle about it anymore, a corp will hire some elected official to shill and then give them a cushy job when they manage to get what they wanted. this is why my two boys refuse to even vote as they see no point in participating what is now obviously a completely corrupted system and with crap like this occurring daily frankly there isn't a single thing I can think of to use as a counterargument. From the local to the national its all nepotism and cronyism and bribery, revolving doors and backroom deals.
I have to wonder if this is how it ends, just one slimy roll downhill as the corps and politicians steal as much as they can before bailing when it all falls down like the fall of Saigon.
Yeah it hasn't been a good couple of days as we lost Ronnie Montrose too, total bummer. Star Wars and Montrose, two things that helped to make the 70s a blast.
Then your mom and pop shop was run by an idiot. You buy the case I'll be happy to jam any damned thing that'll match the holes, I'll just warn you that if you try to jam some Core i7 into a teeny tiny case you need to add water cooling or at least make sure it has plenty of airflow. I have a minitower with a Thuban X6 and it runs at room tem so I know with the right cooler it can be done quite easily. Its a damned shame the shipping would kill me or i'd be making some extra scratch doing that right now as there are a ton of excellent barebones on Tiger and i can whip one of those off in a couple of hours, about 5 if you want a fully patched OS included. I've built so many of the things I have it down to a science, with much of the install process fully automated.
But just remember the customer is always right and if the first shop you come to won't give you want you want there are always others. the fact that he didn't sit down with you and help you design it would have thrown a red flag to me anyway, the first things I ask are 'What do you want to DO with this machine? What is your budget?" and then i sit there with you and we design the best machine we can for the price point. Lately I've been building a lot of the Thuban X6 units, they are transcoding and gaming monsters with serious OCing headroom and the chips are less than $140 on tiger right now. Pair it with a nice case, a Hyper 212 or my fav hyper N520 cooler, a decent board with 8Gb of DDR 3 and whatever size drive you want and you can have yourself a sweet gaming machine. If you aren't worried about power bills I'd go for the HD4850s, you can get a pair of those for $100 which makes for a Crossfire monster but if power is an issue I like the 5770 or 6770 when you can find them.
