As for the Dragon I tried over a dozen browsers before settling on the Dragon for my customers and its quite nice, you can use any of the Chrome extensions like Adblock and readability and it has some really nice privacy features like optional SecureDNS, phishing blocking, and a one click button to look at a site's history and see how it is rated, all optional.

And with Firefox from what I've seen it depends just as much on the CPU as anything else as its like I said not really CPU agnostic anymore. Since the compiler rigging and bribery came out I've quit selling Intel and I've found that while FF up to 3.x was pretty much CPU agnostic after V 5 its really an Intel only browser, at least on Windows. It also doesn't seem to like the lower power AMD chips much, be it Sempron or the Phenom E series or the Zacate APUs. in fact I've found i get nearly an extra hour on my Brazos netbook by simply sticking with Dragon over FF. It don't seem to matter what amount of RAM you have either, its just as sluggish on the 8Gb of RAM in the netbook as it is on the 1.5Gb of RAM on the Sempron. But when I can simply type in a textbox and with Anvir Task Manager I can watch the CPU slam in FF while I can do three times the surfing in Dragon and not hit above 70% there is something wrong there. I tried Opera (low usage but i couldn't get over the UI) to QTWeb (great for a portable browser and low usage but no ABP) and a half a dozen derivatives of Chromium but sadly FF always used the most resources, hung the most, and gave the worst experience, especially on low power chips.

When you have slaves to do the toting for you why bother? I wouldn't be surprised if that is why so many of our earliest leaps of technology came from desert lands like Syria and Egypt, lots of desert plus nomadic tribes equals less chance to capture slaves and a lot more work to feed the ones you have.

To me the more interesting question is 'How many times have we had to reinvent things?' because we see all these dark periods where some religion, or some plague or other disaster comes along and we end up taking these huge stumbles backwards that take centuries to recover from. for example we know now that during the height of the Roman empire they had VERY advanced mathematics, used gold sutures to help prevent infection (even if they didn't know why it worked), used lithium in the form of baths to treat the mentally ill, even had taxis that charged by the mile. Then came the rise of the Christians who promptly destroyed anything that didn't have the word Jesus on it and we were sent backwards by centuries. Not knocking the Christians as it seemed like every religion did the same thing, hell we see the Muslims trying their damnedest to do the same even today.

hell I wouldn't be surprised if the first couple of guys that came up with the wheel weren't promptly strapped to it and set on fire for being witches, would be about right considering here we are in the 21st century and we still have people killing each other over what some goat herder wrote on a piece of sheep's ass 1000+ years ago.

I've also found once it takes RAM for a page it doesn't give it back, even after you close the tab, and in fact you can leave FF running 24 hours and watch as it slowly but surely sucks more and more RAM until it finally grinds the machine with swapping.

For these reasons and the constant complaints about how FF will have "senior moments" and just freeze for a few seconds, just enough to really piss my customers off, I've gotten rid of FF from my default install list in favor of Comodo Dragon. With each new FF release I try it, hoping its changed, but so far no joy. oh they made a little improvement from 9 to 10, if you call going from 100% CPU to 94% CPU improvement but when the same machine hits less than 60% under Dragon I don't really consider that much to celebrate, certainly not enough to matter. In my own tests I've found Dragon, QTWeb, Opera, any of these do better than FF when it comes to memory and CPU usage, both at startup and over time.

Now you may feel free to call me dirty names, claim I must be shilling for some nebulous corp, even though i just named three different browsers, two of which are FOSS, but the simple fact is THERE IS A REASON why Firefox has gotten such a bad rep, its because its deserved because so many of us have had bad experiences with their new direction. Personally i think its Gecko, I think they have stretched the engine beyond its limits trying to bolt more and more onto it trying to rip off Chrome and its in need of a rewrite. I've tried both ESR and Pale Moon which is FF built for speed and certain CPU flags and they both behave similar to FF which makes me think its the underlying engine.

Frankly FF was better before Chrome came along when they were originally trying to just be the best little lightweight standards compliant browser they could be, remember that? What's happening with FF after Chrome reminds me of how MSFT is crapping their pants and screwing up their OS trying to "capture the magic" of the iPad. Both companies had a few bumps but seemed to be making progress but then this new thing grabbed headlines and made them crap their pants with fear, now its a "me too, ohhh me too!" fest and it sucks. At that price nobody is gonna care about 'free as in teh freedoms!" when you have to deal with broken upgrades and crappy drivers and hardware roulette, they just won't. Funny how everyone brings up Dell but NOBODY will ask Dell "What have you made on those Ubuntu sales?" because the answer is ZERO, they've LOST money every sale. they have to maintain their own distro because the crappy drivers die on upgrade, even though we are only talking about a dozen units. This is a symptom of a larger disease, the "blame everybody but Linux" disease where all you will be told is "Ur doin it wrong" and "Use distro X". Does anyone HONESTLY believe one of the largest OEMs on the planet can't even design basic hardware?

Also because AMD isn't in bed with Microsoft or trying to force you to upscale there is no artificial limits on their chips, most will run 8Gb of RAM and the lowest you'll find on max RAM is 4Gb, compare to Intel's 2Gb limit and 10 inch screen mandate. Check out Tiger and Newegg and you can find several units where all you do is slap in the HDD and RAM and you're good to go and these babies can be passively cooled and just sip power.

But what happened with Intel and Nvidia is just a classic example of what happens when a company gets too greedy. Intel couldn't stand the thought of not getting 100% of the chipset business and instead of seeing the added value having a powerful GPU could bring to a weak chip like Atom they killed the entire line and made the chip all but worthless. All my customers that bought non ION Atom units quickly returned them because they were just too damned slow, the units even under XP just felt like they were constantly dragging. I don't know how many time I had an Atom unit brought in by a customer asking "Can you make this any better?" only to have to tell them "Yeah, sell it and get an AMD because this sucks". My EEE has 8Gb of RAM and came with Win 7 HP X64 and runs that full OS as well as any desktop.

Oh a word of advice, if you do try a Brazos unit get "Brazos tweaker", its a free download from Google Codeplex and by dropping the voltage a little you can squeeze even longer battery life or get an even quieter unit. I managed to drop my EEE down 200Mhz at idle and 5% voltage under load which translates to nearly an hour on my 6 cell. really a great chip though, often cheaper than Atom alone yet gives better performance than Atom+ION, makes a great HTPC and both Tiger and the Egg have some really small passive units, just a great chip.

but more and more people will be doing the same things in the future.

No they won't, that's the whole damned point of the cap. Instead you'll be doing like me where you HAVE to take the cableco's bundles, you HAVE to use their phone, you HAVE to watch their shows, do this? that nasty old cap just seems to go away. Don't? Well i hope you like getting cut off, or throttled, or just plain told "we don't want your business" when there aren't any alternatives in the area. Know what Cox is testing out for a cap limit on their consumer lines? 36Gb. My guess is so they don't have to bother with upgrades.

Enjoy the future, where the EU and Asia completely blow away the fat old paper tiger that was the USA whose 1%ers greed has stuck on the short bus to the info superhighway. Gotta make those quarterly earnings targets ya know.

Sadly its true, I've worked on more Vaios than I care to think about and frankly they aren't any better constructed than your average Compaq crap. if you want a good brand try Asus or Samsung, both make products with quality like the olden days of Sony. Back in the day Sony was the one to beat but the PS3 will go down as ultimately a flop and in this hard economic times a new console launch is gonna be a damned hard sell. MSFT can afford to practically give away their consoles thanks to XBL being a money making machine, Sony has no such luxury.

What I find hilarious is all these guys screaming "Sony fucked linux so fuck Sony!" when their choices are if they tell Sony to go to hell...A Microsoft console or a Microsoft PC. oh the irony is most moist and delicious! Well that is unless you REALLY like Pokemon, plumbers, and slightly effeminate guys with boomerangs, oh and a real PITA control schema that is more gimmick than anything else, then i guess you can go Nintendo who is likewise losing money hand over fist.

The only nice thing for the FOSS zealots in all this is at least AMD, which has been highly considerate of FOSS, seems to be the clear winner in all this. Again the irony is most tasty as AMD bent over backwards to give FOSS zealots everything they had asked for only to get in response 'LOL buy Nvidia". If irony was pie we'd all weigh about a thousand pounds right now. it will be quite funny to watch what happens when the zealots have a choice of Sony who fucked Linux, or MSFT who...well fucked Linux. So which do you prefer? A punch in the balls or a kick in the balls? Your choice guys.Gotta say this whole thing is LMAO funny, thanks.

Well let me clue you in...NOBODY CARES, we really don't, if it doesn't work IT IS YOUR FAULT and we don't care about your excuses, its "broken" and we'll take it back or like Linus throw it away for something else. I wonder how long until his kid goes "Dad can't I just have Windows? It works for everybody else and its nice"?

FOSS better wake up and get their A games on or they are gonna be run over like a bug in the windshield of a Mac truck. The future is CONSUMERS in flaming 50 foot neon, this is why Apple is now the biggest company on the planet, why MSFT is better everything on Win 8, and you bring....excuses? nobody cares, and unless you want FOSS to be a niche as teeny tiny as those who will be programming for Raspberry pi you better wake up and smell the future. You think your niche is tiny now? Wait until MSFT announces Win 8 HP is $50 and the triple pack is $100, what few home users you have that aren't zealots will bail because of stupid crap like TFA.
