Because that seems smarter to me than coming out with a $500+ device that only plays games in a dead economy. Did you look at the specs? there ain't no way in hell unless Sony is willing to take a bath on the BOM to get that thing for less than $500, and as we saw with the 3DS folks just ain't shelling out right now, not at those prices.

Bottom line: Under $250 a decent hit, under $200 a major seller, over that price it is DOA and will end up next to the Gizmondo and Touchpad on the "cool but stupid priced" shelf.

Because unless the Danes ONLY do business with the government (considering how much cash the US Gov blows like a crack whore in Vegas frankly some might actually fit that description) then they are STILL gonna have to be compatible with ALL the other businesses in their supply chain, that means MS Office.

So you are telling me there are NO insurance companies in Denmark? No claims, no adjusters, nobody to interact with but the government? Must be candyland to have everything work without a single interaction with the outside world.

Here is what I find funny, and I'm gonna give a big golf clap to the community for it...here goes /GOLF CLAP/....is that you are cheering what could possibly be THE WORST USAGE of LO ever.

Let me use a car analogy, maybe then everyone will understand. You have this econo car, and it is a sweet little thing. It is great on gas, it is cute, cheap to own, cheap to drive, it is just an adorable fun little ride. So you have some company go "Hey, that econo car is great! Lets stick a trailer hitch on it and put this 60 ton trailer on the back. Why our gas bills will fall like a stone!"

Now does anyone think that like the little engine that could that econo car is gonna pull 60 tons? Nope, the axle is gonna shatter, the motor and tranny is gonna fry, you are gonna kill the poor little thing. And the sad part is people WON'T go "Well its your fault for hooking up the trailer dumbass!" nope they'll say "Wow that econo car is a POS!" and the company that makes Peterbuilt will say "This is why you should drive a Peterbuilt, even to the store for some milk. It is because the econo car is shit!"

Now everyone who has had to work with hospital IT raise their hands.../raises hand/....thought so. Let me explain a little something about hospital IT, kay? It is a motherfucking mess. You are talking word docs from hell with more embedded crap than a fricking thesis, even worse you are talking "applications" made by stuffing enough VBA into an Excel sheet to choke a fricking horse (oh and that crap is mission critical BTW, so you better have a full team of programmers on hand ready to rewrite that in the language of your choice STAT) and PPTs with so damn many charts, and docs, and every other damned thing embedded in them they can truly become mythic in size and complexity.

Now am I saying LO is shit? Am I saying there is no place for it? No in fact I'll be happy to name a place it should be right now everywhere...schools. There shouldn't be a single school on the planet paying a penny for MS Office. If MSFT wants to give it away fine, but not a single cent. LO would fill that job wonderfully because millions of dollars aren't riding on little Billy's term paper. with hospitals you got HMOs, you got the various carriers, you got literally dozens of groups ALL of which need data for various purposes. And ALL will be using MS Office unless the Danes are gonna say ;'fuck the free market!" and simply ban MSFT products from their shores.

So cheer all you want /. but don't say old Feet didn't warn ya. In 3 years the headline will be "Danish hospitals go back to MS Office, consider LO massive failure" and then we'll get the usual circle jerk about how everyone should have used PDF (PROTIP: Every company uses data analysis software that DOES NOT WORK on PDF) and how its everybody else's fault instead of laying blame where it should be, on the fact they were using LO in a place it shouldn't have been.

Wait until they start getting complaints like "What is wrong with this doc you sent us, it is just gibberish!" or "Hey we need this Excel sheet to open and all it does is crash!" or "What happened to my PPT? It looks like it has been fed through a grinder!"

LO works great if you are little Timmy writing a report he is gonna print anyway, I give it to my home users for just that purpose. but I have to warn them not to be sending any LO docs by email because anything of ANY complexity, like say headers and footers and fonts? Word Salad. I have seen students dinged over LO docs turning to crap when the teacher opened them in MS Office. it was bad enough at the local college they got a site license for the students just so they wouldn't have to deal with it.

But of course all we'll hear after I post this is "La la la I can't hear you, you must be a M$ Ninja!" to which I say here is the proof, try it yourself IF YOU DARE. There are tons of nice and complex Word docs on government websites, help yourself, download a dozen. do the same for Excel sheets. I'm sure most geeks here have access to MS Office yes? Try editing one of those complex docs or sheets in LO, IF you can get then to open correctly, and then save it in a standard Word 97-03 format. Now open that same doc and sheet you just saved in MS Office, version of your choice. What do you get? Word Salad or number hosing.

The fact they can get it to open at all is frankly a miracle but don't kid yourselves, the world uses MS Office for a REASON. it is because everyone has to share docs and sheets and PPTs with everyone else and that means compatibility. Now I'm sure some dude will chime in about how some doc he saw or heard about in 2004 didn't open right in MS Office to which I say, so what? for 99.9995% it "just works". I've had to deal with projects where I had Office 2K, 2K3, 2K4 for Mac, and 2K7 all collaborating on a 14Mb mess of a doc, the ONLY one who had trouble with it? The one kid trying to use open Office. We ended up getting him a copy of 2K3 just so we didn't have to deal, and sadly we'll see in 2 or 3 years the same in TFA.

This is a classic case of "penny wise pound foolish" as it'll cost them more in lost hours dealing with borked data than it would be just to buy the damned MS Office licenses, which they could probably get a discount on if their guy in charge of purchasing didn't suck.

On the wireless front dad didn't have a clue how to connection and share his new laptop and I couldn't swing by until the weekend. naturally he decided to do it himself and Windows walked him through setting up Homegroup so he can drag and drop between his home machine and his laptop.

So I'd say for the first time since the conversion from Win9X to WinXP that Windows 7 really is worth it for the masses. I just recently finished converting the last of my family and when I offered the youngest a PC to use while I finished upgrading his hardware when he found out it had XP he said he'd rather do without. when I asked why he said "because XP sucks and Windows 7 is nice" and that sums it up better than I could. Win 7 is just a nice OS to use all around.

Then fuck it, you can get a 2Tb HDD for like $69 on sale. Most mid towers can hold 4 or even 5 drives now and a 1Tb Seagate green is on sale this weekend at Newegg for $44.

And if you like the Blu ray and Sixaxis I'm happy for you, you and the other 6 guys should have a club or something. I can only speak for my shop and my area but while I've set up plenty of honking big sets the reaction to BD has been a giant "meh" from the customers. Nobody wants it, they are happy with upscaled DVD for their collections and streaming Netflix for everything else. You mark my words BD is gonna be the laserdisc of the 21st century, a format that held promise of better graphics that the consumer just didn't give a crap about.

You wanna jump on the "next big thing" I can tell ya what is selling like hotcakes around here, and that is media tanks. The WDTV for the parents, the Nbox for the kiddies. Man those things really move! Now that even basic motherboards come with hardware transcoding it is beyond trivial to show folks how to rip their movies into nice .avi files and instead of worrying about scratched discs or where their movie is they can just fire up WMC on their new Win 7 HTPC or the media tank in theirs or their kids bedroom and BAM! All their entertainment, right at their fingertips.

You see that is the problem with Sony also being a media company. They are more worried about DRM than what you should be able to do with the box. With the cell you should have been able to transcode at frankly insane speeds straight to a USB HDD and had all your entertainment right there easy peasy. Instead you have the local Walmart giving less space to BDs every month because they simply don't sell while the DVD aisle is beyond capacity and they are actually setting up kiosks in the aisles to make up for all the content they are moving.

And as for your last point? Dark Knight. Dark Knight had the action but was...oh what was the word?....oh yeah GOOD. It had this nice undercurrent on vigilantism and anarchy vs society and while there were a few nigglers (like how the Joker got crazy henchmen that actually were dependable) overall frankly at its worst it was the Godfather compared to anything Michael Bay has ever put out.

I like how Movie Bob over at Zero Punctuation (which if you haven't watched him you really should, he reminds me of Ebert back in the day) described Michael bay films: Movies BY douchebags FOR douchebags. Like you said a two hour "You are teh stupid!" while bright lights flash in your face. After seeing good action movies like Iron Man and Dark Knight watching a Bay film is about as pleasant as watching a Uwe Boll film, only you don't even get the pleasure of making fun of it, its just bad with a capital B.

While I don't mess with pirated Windows mind you, do you have ANY idea how simple it is to fix when one of those machines are blacklisted? This is how simple: "Run WGA Killer by going clicky clicky, reboot, turn off Windows updates and set WSUS Offline to run instead" and that's it. Hell most of the OEM Win 7 discs floating around out there need NO key at all!

And if you have an old box lying around or a spare partition you really need to try the "Tiny" series, it is bloody brilliant. We aren't talking some NLite/VLite bullshit, this guy tears into the guts of Windows and cuts out the bullshit to make insane gamer versions that have almost no overhead. We are talking WinXP that runs killer on 256Mb of RAM and a 1GHz CPU, same for WinServer 2K3, and for Vista and 7? Hows a fully functional WITH Aero Windows Vista/7 that runs sweet and snappy on a 1.4GHz with 512Mb of RAM sound? And you can imagine if it runs sweet and snappy on gear THAT old how fast it runs on a modern multicore, it is almost like having an SSD upgrade for free!

If anyone at MSFT had a brain they'd hire this guy, because in my experiments at the shop I've tried WinFLP, WinEmbedded, and frankly even stripped to their most useless they don't hold a candle to the Tiny series on resource usage, and the Tiny installs keep nearly all the functionality!

Uhhh...dude? 16 bit apps are more than A DECADE AND A HALF old okay? And you can STILL use them with DOSBox trivially. How well does 15 year old Linux apps run? try not at all. BTW I just got done playing some No One Lives Forever, that is 1998 vintage gaming on windows 7 X64. That is 13 YEARS worth of playability.

One thing you can NOT complain about with MSFT is backwards compatibility, hell I'd say more than half of the patches released for Windows 7 so far have been more shims for compatibility to make even more old programs run.

BTW did you know that you too can write shims to improve compatibility? And unlike Linux there is ZERO CLI involved, nor need for scripting? All you need is the Application Compatibility Toolkit and MSFT is even nice enough to provide several Technet videos to walk you through making your own shims. this is how dedicated gamers have gotten games like the Star Wars VS TIE Fighter to run.

So I really don't see how you have ANY leg to stand on when it comes to BC. With Windows you have DOSBox and XP Mode for 16bit, you have incredible support for 32bit in 64bit Windows with NO recompiling bullshit, and they even give you tools that you can use to make your own shims if the ones included don't work for you, and it is all easy peasy beautiful.

No compare that to Linux. Every 6 months? Driver borkage thanks to Linus going Goatse on the kernel, need to run old apps? Well you better have the correct kernel for those old apps or be ready for a recompile friend! And don't say LTS because currently the LTS has less time to EOL than XP does, and I DARE you to try to go from the previous LTS to the latest without having to start over thanks to borkage.

The simple fact is Linus don't give a shit about users, or consumers, the only person Linus gives a shit about is Linus. He still acts like it is 93 and the kernel is his personal science project, free for him to scratch itches wherever and whenever he wants, fuck everybody else. You mark my words less than 6 months after Linus retires Linux WILL have a stable ABI and the constant kernel Goatse bullshit will end. But as long as he is the head of the kernel team he is the worst enemy of his own creation.

He still recommends them but then again this is a guy that recommends spending over $400 on a pair of headphones with another couple of hundred on an amp to drive them.

This of course doesn't even figure in the facts that SSDs are frankly tiny little suckers and that one of any decent size would frankly be several orders of magnitude higher than the price increase on HDDs. Hell in my own case my basic WinXP/7 dual boot is taking up probably close to 200Gb simply because with 3Tb I never have to give a crap. I don't even want to know what an SSD big enough to hold that would cost, not to mention the 500Gb+ in movies, music, games, and audio projects I have on board.

No, frankly the answer is quite simple and something we should have been doing for a long time and would have been if it weren't for traitors in congress giving tax breaks to those that offshore so they have NO penalty for exporting vital industry. what we should do is fire the mines back up in NM and treat it as what it is, vital to our national interest. it should be nationalized (I believe We, The People already own the land) and Americans should be put to work mining that ore. Too many electronics require those metals to have our industry cut off at the knees by the Chinese, and Lord knows there are plenty of Americans that can use the work.

And I'd argue that Linus is a selfish arrogant asshole that shouldn't be listened to. Look at the facts: In 1993 Linus decides that hardware ABIs are evil and he won't allow them. now at the time the PC was at 30Mhz and RAM was worth more per Mb than diamonds so this view may or may not have been justified depending on the overhead.

But now here it is 2011, and ALL of the major OSes, MSFT Windows, Apple OSX, BSD all flavors, hell even OS/2 has an ABI. This allows a person or company to "write once, use for years" thus making it easier on BOTH the company AND the user who doesn't have to deal with constant driver breakage. Also PCs are multicores with even old machines having 512Mb of RAM, so overhead for an ABI would be trivial. Does Linus admit times have changed and change his tune? Fuck no! He continues to Goatse the kernel anytime he pleases and acts like it is still 1993 and he can do whatever he wants, fuck everybody else.

Crap like this and TFA just shows that Linus is completely out of touch and frankly needs to "pursue other interests" so that Linux can go forward. I can tell you both in my shop and talking to other shops it is the fucking driver mess that keeps anyone from offering Linux because frankly the support costs of having one or more drivers break every 6 months would drive our costs through the roof. I can also give links to articles on big name corps like Walamrt and ASUS bailing on Linux. Why? same thing fiddly driver bullshit shoots up support costs.

So can we PLEASE have someone fork the kernel already? that is what is supposed to happen in FOSS when a sitch gets bad, fork right? Well I'd argue the sitch with Linus is bad with a capital B. he was great back in the day but we ain't in back in the day anymore. He doesn't get VMs and he doesn't get ABIs, what else doesn't he get? I'd argue if it weren't for driver borkage Linux could be making serious inroads. there are plenty of whitebox shops that would be happy to get rid of Windows licensing costs, plenty of places like Walmart that are always looking for a way to lower the price. No Windows tax? means I can undercut my competition by a cool $100 right off the top.

But until Linux gets someone at the helm that doesn't treat the kernel as his personal playtoy and thinks about the consumers Linux will stay stuck at 1%.

Linux is a good OS, it has great DEs, tons of nice software, good security, frankly it deserves better than Torvalds and his kernel screwing.
