There really is no compelling reason to go for a Pentium in 2018, they are beaten in every metric except for single thread performance in a VERY limited (and growing more so every day) list of programs that can only take advantage of a single thread. I wouldn't tell someone to toss one if they had one they had bought in the past (just as I still have a Q9505s Media Center I use at the shop for looking up parts and converting VHS to DVD) but buying 1 for a new build? I think Intel is seriously gonna be hurting in 2019 which is why we are seeing the same old shenanigans like we saw during the P4 with the rigged benchmarks and crap,at this point the really either have to just murder their server sales (and lose serious profits) by moving more and more Xeon chips into the i series or continue to lose sales as AMD is frankly just offering better deals.
The uptick for the end user though is I'm seeing Xeon workstations just get dumped on the used market for some crazy cheap prices as the pros are all switching to Threadripper so if you want a cheap gaming PC? Those Xeon workstations are quite nice, not gonna be doing Intel any favors though.
Maybe...if you are running Win98. Today's OSes are more than capable of multitasking so even if you are just doing nothing but simple browsing those extra threads can come in handy, for example just browsing I also have a temp monitor, AMD Customer Experience (reports if a game has bugs or crashes so they can release patches), several threads for the browser, Steam checking for updates to my games, etc.
So even with my older FX-8320e I've found the extra threads frankly more useful than more single thread performance as I don't have to think "do I have enough oomph for this?", if I suddenly decide to watch a little classic Vincent Price for Halloween (Theatre Of Blood 1973, love 70s Price) while I'm rendering some video? No problem, I just do it. If my AV wants to update itself while I'm gaming? Don't care, never notice. Nothing skips, nothing stutters, The PC can happily do its background tasks even if I'm chopping baddies to sushi in Shadow Warrior 2 or letting go with a full broadsides in World Of Warships and I'll never be bothered,it all "just works".
You try doing that on that G5600 and you are gonna be stuttering so bad you'll think you are on a P4, so if that makes ya happy go for it, but frankly I'd take even a Ryzen 3 over the G5600 any day of the week which just FYI is also $10 cheaper on Newegg than the 5600.

My wife was given a Brother wireless color printer a few years back by one of my doctor customers (turned out they are both into photography and he had just upgraded to a newer model) and it only cost something like $20 for 8 sets of CMYK color and black using third party which it doesn't give a shit about and which looks....rather nice actually. It has a self clean routine it does once a day so if she doesn't print for a week no big whoop and I don't think I've ever had to even deal with a paper jam.
So I'd say the problem is folks picking up those sub $100 shitpiles like Lexmark and the finding out all those sub $100 junkers use the razor blade model of business so they end up just piled into mountains at the dump because its cheaper to buy a new one than buy ink for the POS. So if having no printer works for you? I'm glad, you do you, my wife just isn't patient enough to wait on prints in the mail so when this Brother finally wears out? Sounded great on paper yet when you watch that vid you see a single 163 is looking at 800+ fighters AND about 6,000 bombers!

Cuz I've been seeing tons of Surfaces, specially in the SMB and medical markets, hell even my local hospital is running Surface units across the board and that place usually takes 3 damn forevers to update anything and still had XP units damn near to the release of 8.1. The reason why they are all grabbing surface is simple, all that third party Windows only software from the diagnostic tools to the billing software all run on Windows, not Apple or Android.
Never underestimate the power of Windows X86 lock in, they weren't competitive before because they really didn't have any products in a tablet form factor that were any good or decently priced but these new Surface units are light and affordable and ez pz for your average nurse of line worker to just carry around tapping in data. Hell I just got done setting up a bunch of Wifi extenders for a doctor that got tired of trying to get all the software her office needs running on iPads so she just shitcanned the whole bunch, now everyone from the receptionist to the RNs to the doc herself are all carrying Surface units and all her software "just works".
There is literally millions of highly specialized programs that simply do not run on any other OS and if MSFT keeps down this route of making them easy to use and affordable? I can see a lot of the companies that sell these programs just telling customers "just get a Surface" instead of wasting all the time and money trying to port and I can't say I blame 'em, as they really are nice light responsive little things and gave me a better experience than the last time I messed with an Android tablet.

Honestly I don't see how they can not drop support for the Switch 1 or at least gimp the shit out of the games so badly it'll look like you are gaming on a 2009 PC compared to what the new unit will do. So while I give the XB1 and PS4 a little longer simply because of the amount of RAM they packed in and the fact they are just AMD APUs and devs know how to squeeze performance out of X86 rather easily Nintendo is IMHO gonna have it the worst, with smartphones getting ever more powerful and consoles pushing high graphics at 1080p trying to have an AIO unit for both portable and home is really gonna limit their options and quickly leave them the choice of forgetting the Switch 1 or ending up another also ran like the Wii U.
Uhhh just looked at the latest figures and Apple's share is...11.9%, in fact according to Motley Fool they have been losing share worldwide for more than 6 months. Their market cap is so good frankly because they sell last year's tech at next years prices which gives them a hell of a profit margin.
And honestly the USA is a teeny tiny slice of the worldwide pie, with countries like BRIC making the USA look like small potatoes and its in those markets of tomorrow that GOOG is setting up a stranglehold that frankly MSFT of the 90s wishes it had. Its ironic too as they are using the same tactics MSFT did in the 90s with nasty contracts requiring the bundling of GAPPs and hiding more and more behind the Playwall thus making it harder and harder to have a functioning system without connecting it to GOOG.

So even with my older FX-8320e I've found the extra threads frankly more useful than more single thread performance as I don't have to think "do I have enough oomph for this?", if I suddenly decide to watch a little classic Vincent Price for Halloween (Theatre Of Blood 1973, love 70s Price) while I'm rendering some video? No problem, I just do it. If my AV wants to update itself while I'm gaming? Don't care, never notice. Nothing skips, nothing stutters, The PC can happily do its background tasks even if I'm chopping baddies to sushi in Shadow Warrior 2 or letting go with a full broadsides in World Of Warships and I'll never be bothered,it all "just works".
You try doing that on that G5600 and you are gonna be stuttering so bad you'll think you are on a P4, so if that makes ya happy go for it, but frankly I'd take even a Ryzen 3 over the G5600 any day of the week which just FYI is also $10 cheaper on Newegg than the 5600.

My wife was given a Brother wireless color printer a few years back by one of my doctor customers (turned out they are both into photography and he had just upgraded to a newer model) and it only cost something like $20 for 8 sets of CMYK color and black using third party which it doesn't give a shit about and which looks....rather nice actually. It has a self clean routine it does once a day so if she doesn't print for a week no big whoop and I don't think I've ever had to even deal with a paper jam.
So I'd say the problem is folks picking up those sub $100 shitpiles like Lexmark and the finding out all those sub $100 junkers use the razor blade model of business so they end up just piled into mountains at the dump because its cheaper to buy a new one than buy ink for the POS. So if having no printer works for you? I'm glad, you do you, my wife just isn't patient enough to wait on prints in the mail so when this Brother finally wears out? We'll just get another one, the increased up front cost is well worth it when the ink is so much cheaper.

I think a perfect example is "Dogfights: Long Odds" when they showed with computer animation EXACTLY what an ME-163 pilot was facing. When the 163 came out it was arguably the most powerful interceptor being fielded by anyone, able to climb from 0 to 14k feet in under 6 minutes and with truly punishing firepower. Sounded great on paper yet when you watch that vid you see a single 163 is looking at 800+ fighters AND about 6,000 bombers!
So even if the F35 was to magically work perfectly (which it never has) the absurd cost means its always gonna be horribly outnumbered by so called "inferior" fighters and as we saw in Kosovo with a little "out of the box" thinking its not that hard to defeat stealth which is supposed to be the thing's saving grace. IMHO if we want some stealth birds we should build the F15 Stealth Eagle and instead of wasting mountains of money on techno turkeys like the F35 use it to build improvements to proven affordable designs like the teen series fighters.

Cuz I've been seeing tons of Surfaces, specially in the SMB and medical markets, hell even my local hospital is running Surface units across the board and that place usually takes 3 damn forevers to update anything and still had XP units damn near to the release of 8.1. The reason why they are all grabbing surface is simple, all that third party Windows only software from the diagnostic tools to the billing software all run on Windows, not Apple or Android.
Never underestimate the power of Windows X86 lock in, they weren't competitive before because they really didn't have any products in a tablet form factor that were any good or decently priced but these new Surface units are light and affordable and ez pz for your average nurse of line worker to just carry around tapping in data. Hell I just got done setting up a bunch of Wifi extenders for a doctor that got tired of trying to get all the software her office needs running on iPads so she just shitcanned the whole bunch, now everyone from the receptionist to the RNs to the doc herself are all carrying Surface units and all her software "just works".
There is literally millions of highly specialized programs that simply do not run on any other OS and if MSFT keeps down this route of making them easy to use and affordable? I can see a lot of the companies that sell these programs just telling customers "just get a Surface" instead of wasting all the time and money trying to port and I can't say I blame 'em, as they really are nice light responsive little things and gave me a better experience than the last time I messed with an Android tablet.

Honestly I don't see how they can not drop support for the Switch 1 or at least gimp the shit out of the games so badly it'll look like you are gaming on a 2009 PC compared to what the new unit will do. Hell the quality of graphics they are coming out with in this years titles is just amazing and as we saw with the Wii U the big N can't just live on first party titles, they are gonna need those tentpole releases if they are to survive.
So while I give the XB1 and PS4 a little longer simply because of the amount of RAM they packed in and the fact they are just AMD APUs and devs know how to squeeze performance out of X86 rather easily Nintendo is IMHO gonna have it the worst, with smartphones getting ever more powerful and consoles pushing high graphics at 1080p trying to have an AIO unit for both portable and home is really gonna limit their options and quickly leave them the choice of forgetting the Switch 1 or ending up another also ran like the Wii U.
Uhhh just looked at the latest figures and Apple's share is...11.9%, in fact according to Motley Fool they have been losing share worldwide for more than 6 months. Their market cap is so good frankly because they sell last year's tech at next years prices which gives them a hell of a profit margin.
And honestly the USA is a teeny tiny slice of the worldwide pie, with countries like BRIC making the USA look like small potatoes and its in those markets of tomorrow that GOOG is setting up a stranglehold that frankly MSFT of the 90s wishes it had. Its ironic too as they are using the same tactics MSFT did in the 90s with nasty contracts requiring the bundling of GAPPs and hiding more and more behind the Playwall thus making it harder and harder to have a functioning system without connecting it to GOOG.
So I'm not really worried about APPL, they like their profit margins too much to give up their high end niche status to go mainstream globally while GOOG is much more nerfarious in that they don't want your money, YOU are the product they intend to sell. So...yeah maybe about time for a good old antitrust, although frankly we'd have better luck with the EU as the DoJ has been toothless in the USA for the better part of a decade now.
