The ICE infrastructure didn't just appear overnight, its taken the better part of 70 years to get where we are now, hell in my home state when I was a child paved roads outside of the cities and freeway were a luxury and you pretty much had to have a large truck capable of taking the abuse of dirt roads, much less gas stations all over the place. How do you get all the rural states infrastructure built up to take all the extra power, charging stations, places to put the EVs where the weather isn't gonna kill the batteries, etc without spending trillions of dollars that will never see a ROI?
Hell the USA has one of the lowest corp tax rates already and we still have corps like Apple pulling Irish Whips and Double Dutch to keep from paying taxes, how are you gonna raise the trillions required to switch the entire country to EV in a reasonable amount of time (because until the infrastructure reaches a tipping point you are gonna see EVs screwed by the "chicken or egg" problem) without royally fucking the poor and rapidly dying out middle class?We have Walmart replacing their janitors with robots and we still have no clue what to do with the millions who simply do not have the IQ to compete in a super high tech society, where is all this money gonna come from?
All these "solutions" I've seen is simply "get the government to foot the bill" with no actual explanation of HOW are they gonna pay for it and I just don't see where all this money is gonna come from while continuing to take care of the rapidly growing masses of uneducated and low IQ poor folks we have in this country, poorly cared for infrastructure, ever growing national debt, and the dozens of other serious issues we have in this country.
I have a feeling unless someone else (the government) just pours assloads of money into EVs the external costs (namely the batteries, but several other factors as well) are simply gonna make it nonviable for large sections of the USA.
The issue is gonna be the Lithium batteries which last I checked really REALLY don't like extreme changes in temp and most folks? Yeah they don't have climate controlled garages. In my own state we go from 110f in the summer to low teens in winter, how long do you think Lithium batteries are gonna last with it sitting in a driveway or in a parking lot having to go through those kinds of temp shifts? This of course isn't even figuring in the environmental cost of mining the lithium, refining, manufacturing, and disposing of the used batteries and coming up with a way to generate all the power to feed millions of EVs with NIMBYs making damn sure its hard to build any kind of power plants here, especially nuclear.
So unless we come up with some new battery tech that can last a decade plus in wildly shifting temps and find a way to tell NIMBYs to have a heaping cup of STFU I really do not see this tech working in a country with as much variation in temp and weather conditions (not to mention mileage) as the USA. Hell how are you gonna dispose of all the used EVs nobody wants? Once these things get 6-7 years old in places with large climate shifts nobody is gonna want them as the cost of replacing the batteries is gonna cost more than the car is worth. What are the poor gonna drive? In the rural states you are looking at tons of sub $10k cars sold as its really not hard to keep an ICE vehicle on the road for decades but with EVs again the battery bites you in the ass and public transport simply doesn't work with rural states where everything is so spread out.Then there is the huge cost of sitting up power charging stations or having battery swaps for long trips,upgrades to the power grid to handle all the extra power draw from all those cars charging every night, etc.
There is just so many downsides to EVs that it doesn't seem anybody has taken a really hard look at and crunched the numbers and like them or not ICE vehicles at this time are not only cheaper but the cost is born by the individual whereas with EVs a shitload of the cost of setting all this up is gonna be bore by the state which is gonna mean more taxes, more red tape, more bullshit. I just don't see this becoming viable by 2026 to just toss ICE vehicles completely, just too many things we haven't figured out yet.

Ya know I was one of the first to LMAO at that God Awful "supersized smart phone UI" that was Win Mist8ke Edition but its really damn solid under the hood, right up there with XP X64 AKA Win2K3 Workstation for being really damn reliable and trouble free which I would have never found out about if I wouldn't have had a customer with a system that lacked stable drivers for Win 7 and said "Please fix this damn thing!". But once I found and tried Classic Shell on her system I was like "Heeey, this is pretty damn nice. Boots fast, better task manager, better response times, this is actually pretty sweet!" so I broke out my Win 8 Pro disc I had sitting in a drawer, installed and upgraded to 8.1 on my system...and never went back.
So I gotta agree with you 110%, IDK how anybody deals with the damn tablet UI of Win 8 but you just swap that out with Classic Shell? Its the best damn workstation OS I've run in over a decade and kicks the snot out of Win 7, especially for heavy lifting like video editing. Its memory management is soooo much better than Win 7 as it quickly learned my routine so now all my programs are cached in memory when I need them so are super responsive, everything "just works" and thanks to Classic Shell it just gets out of my way and lets me work, no stupid Candy Crush or ads being bitchslapped in my face, no Cliptana bugging me, its just a super fast responsive OS...ahhh like a breath of fresh air!

Ironically Windows 8.1? Is a really good OS and is IMHO heads and shoulders above Win 10 as its not constantly being broken by Microshit patches.
Win 8.1 plus Classic Shell? Is Win 7 with better SSD support and faster boot times. I'll stick with 8.1 until it is no longer supported of Linux has full support for gaming thanks to Valve, I've seen enough of Win 10 shitting all over itself to know its not a good OS.
You must be a youngster then because it didn't used to be this way, specially during the 00s PC boom. I remember scoring C2Qs and AMD Phenom Triples for sub $200 on Black Friday with pretty damn good specs from memory to HDD space. Sure the OS was filled with crapware but it was easy enough to just nuke the OS and use the enclosed key to install a clean OS. You didn't get the top CPU but it would be not very far from it, for example when the Q9xxx was the top Intel chips you would get a Q8xxx so really not bad.
But what they are offering now? Frankly sub $250 used PCs on eBay have newer CPUs and better specs than their $400+ offerings, its literally old junk that was sitting in a warehouse somewhere but they are asking new PC prices for. I mean seriously an FX-6300 for $400? AMD A8s and Core i3 dual cores for $500? Their prices are frankly worse than what I've seen on just daily deals from Amazon and Dell, they sure as hell ain't worth standing in line in the cold to buy that is for damn sure!

Maybe its because I was in the biz and had access to hardware you didn't but the boss at the PC shop I worked at had me hooked up to an ex server board with dual socket 650Mhz running an insane at the time 512Mb of RAM and even back then I'd have to get off my system and jump onto a 450Mhz Celery like the masses were using at the time and go "wow...this REALLY sucks" so even back then I had got to experience just how much nicer multicores were and even on basic office work and browsing it was like night and day, you on your PC would have been like Bubsy and I was Sonic on crack, I could bounce between a dozen running programs with instant reaction time thanks to my 10k RPM drives, it was like running an octocore with SSD today.
You just didn't know it blew because you didn't get to see what as possible back then which was totally understandable, until I took a job at the shop I thought my Celery 300a OCed to 500Mhz was just banging but even back then once you went multicore? You just couldn't go back, it was just too painful. Hell the boss even gave me one of the first 1Ghz systems that came through the door, I ended up handing it back and going back to my dual 650Mhz until we got some dual socket boards that could take the 1Ghz+ chips, I just could not stand going back to single core after tasting how much nicer computing with multicore was.

This user was the only time I ever had to throw a customer out of the shop in all my years and you will see why in this case? Yeah it was warranted. I had a customer come in to buy a desktop and he said "I want you to install Limewire on it" and this was nearly 3 years after the FBI killed Limewire so I told him "Look the FBI shut that down years ago, the only "Limewire" software out there now is just a virus with the Limewire logo, but I will be happy to show you how bitttorrent works or install Emule which is still up and running" but he says not to bother and he buys a PC...the next day he comes back demanding free repair, when I ask him what happened and boot up the PC he said "I got infected in less than an hour and you said it was safe" so I boot it up and find it filled with malware...and a big limewire icon. I ask him "What happened to the antivirus?" and get told "it wouldn't let me install limewire" when I explain AGAIN that limewire does not exist and the antivius was trying to stop him from installing a fake copy of limewire he starts screaming "The icon is right there and it says limwire you make it work!" so I ended up having to threaten to call the cops and threw him out with him screaming "You are a liar that says limewire you are just trying to cheat me!"

Because in 1998 we were using 600Mhz CPUs with almost no cache, 128Mb of RAM was considered a lot, oh and did I mention that if there was ANY error 9 times out of 10 your computer would just crash and take your work with it? And God forbid you have more than 1 thing at a time you wanted to do as multitasking was about as pleasant as waiting in line at the DMV.
Now if you would have said 2008, when the Phenom quads and C2Q ruled the land and 4-8Gb of RAM was pretty common? Would have agreed with you 100%, because even today those early quads are quite usable for a daily driver, heck I have an HP Media Center with a Q9505s I still use at the shop for looking up parts and converting analog to digital thanks to its built in capture card and on basic tasks its as snappy as my octocore, but dude its obvious its been quite awhile since you used a single core X86 PC because let me tell you its quite painful.
Even those $10 ARM SoC maker boards use at least a dual as nobody wants to suffer with a single core even at $10 and those CPU designs are a hell of a lot more advanced than the shit we was running in 98.

Nowadays with the Ryzen 3 at just $90 and the Athlon 200GE APU for just $55? Even on the low end Intel just doesn't have any real compelling choices, not when you figure in the higher cost of boards and what performance you are getting for the cost. The new Athlon APU can play nearly all the eSports like Rocket League and Fortnite at 1080p above 30 FPS...and that is a $55 chip my dude, and you can later pair it with something like an RX 570 or GT 1030.
Right now if someone came to me and said "I want to buy Intel, what should I get?" honestly? I'd tell them to look into the used workstation market, with so many pros dumping Xeon for Threadripper you can get some crazy good deals on Xeon 6-12 thread boxes that are cheaper than putting together a Ryzen of i5 with the same number of threads, but if all you want is a home gaming box? Ryzen 3 hands down,it has the Vega GPU, it has 4 cores with a boost of 3.7 Ghz, and if you decide you need more down the line you can just drop in a Ryzen 5 or 7 down the line with no issue.
But you were correct when all AMD had was FX, if you didn't do streaming or recording like me and just wanted a solid gaming PC? The Pentiums and i3s were good deals, its just that in 2018 the shoe is on the other foot and AMD has the better deals and the difference in games is so tiny you honestly will never notice which chip is which.

The ICE infrastructure didn't just appear overnight, its taken the better part of 70 years to get where we are now, hell in my home state when I was a child paved roads outside of the cities and freeway were a luxury and you pretty much had to have a large truck capable of taking the abuse of dirt roads, much less gas stations all over the place. How do you get all the rural states infrastructure built up to take all the extra power, charging stations, places to put the EVs where the weather isn't gonna kill the batteries, etc without spending trillions of dollars that will never see a ROI?
Hell the USA has one of the lowest corp tax rates already and we still have corps like Apple pulling Irish Whips and Double Dutch to keep from paying taxes, how are you gonna raise the trillions required to switch the entire country to EV in a reasonable amount of time (because until the infrastructure reaches a tipping point you are gonna see EVs screwed by the "chicken or egg" problem) without royally fucking the poor and rapidly dying out middle class?We have Walmart replacing their janitors with robots and we still have no clue what to do with the millions who simply do not have the IQ to compete in a super high tech society, where is all this money gonna come from?
All these "solutions" I've seen is simply "get the government to foot the bill" with no actual explanation of HOW are they gonna pay for it and I just don't see where all this money is gonna come from while continuing to take care of the rapidly growing masses of uneducated and low IQ poor folks we have in this country, poorly cared for infrastructure, ever growing national debt, and the dozens of other serious issues we have in this country.
I have a feeling unless someone else (the government) just pours assloads of money into EVs the external costs (namely the batteries, but several other factors as well) are simply gonna make it nonviable for large sections of the USA.
The issue is gonna be the Lithium batteries which last I checked really REALLY don't like extreme changes in temp and most folks? Yeah they don't have climate controlled garages. In my own state we go from 110f in the summer to low teens in winter, how long do you think Lithium batteries are gonna last with it sitting in a driveway or in a parking lot having to go through those kinds of temp shifts? This of course isn't even figuring in the environmental cost of mining the lithium, refining, manufacturing, and disposing of the used batteries and coming up with a way to generate all the power to feed millions of EVs with NIMBYs making damn sure its hard to build any kind of power plants here, especially nuclear.
So unless we come up with some new battery tech that can last a decade plus in wildly shifting temps and find a way to tell NIMBYs to have a heaping cup of STFU I really do not see this tech working in a country with as much variation in temp and weather conditions (not to mention mileage) as the USA. Hell how are you gonna dispose of all the used EVs nobody wants? Once these things get 6-7 years old in places with large climate shifts nobody is gonna want them as the cost of replacing the batteries is gonna cost more than the car is worth. What are the poor gonna drive? In the rural states you are looking at tons of sub $10k cars sold as its really not hard to keep an ICE vehicle on the road for decades but with EVs again the battery bites you in the ass and public transport simply doesn't work with rural states where everything is so spread out.Then there is the huge cost of sitting up power charging stations or having battery swaps for long trips,upgrades to the power grid to handle all the extra power draw from all those cars charging every night, etc.
There is just so many downsides to EVs that it doesn't seem anybody has taken a really hard look at and crunched the numbers and like them or not ICE vehicles at this time are not only cheaper but the cost is born by the individual whereas with EVs a shitload of the cost of setting all this up is gonna be bore by the state which is gonna mean more taxes, more red tape, more bullshit. I just don't see this becoming viable by 2026 to just toss ICE vehicles completely, just too many things we haven't figured out yet.

Ya know I was one of the first to LMAO at that God Awful "supersized smart phone UI" that was Win Mist8ke Edition but its really damn solid under the hood, right up there with XP X64 AKA Win2K3 Workstation for being really damn reliable and trouble free which I would have never found out about if I wouldn't have had a customer with a system that lacked stable drivers for Win 7 and said "Please fix this damn thing!". But once I found and tried Classic Shell on her system I was like "Heeey, this is pretty damn nice. Boots fast, better task manager, better response times, this is actually pretty sweet!" so I broke out my Win 8 Pro disc I had sitting in a drawer, installed and upgraded to 8.1 on my system...and never went back.
So I gotta agree with you 110%, IDK how anybody deals with the damn tablet UI of Win 8 but you just swap that out with Classic Shell? Its the best damn workstation OS I've run in over a decade and kicks the snot out of Win 7, especially for heavy lifting like video editing. Its memory management is soooo much better than Win 7 as it quickly learned my routine so now all my programs are cached in memory when I need them so are super responsive, everything "just works" and thanks to Classic Shell it just gets out of my way and lets me work, no stupid Candy Crush or ads being bitchslapped in my face, no Cliptana bugging me, its just a super fast responsive OS...ahhh like a breath of fresh air!

Ironically Windows 8.1? Is a really good OS and is IMHO heads and shoulders above Win 10 as its not constantly being broken by Microshit patches.
Win 8.1 plus Classic Shell? Is Win 7 with better SSD support and faster boot times. I'll stick with 8.1 until it is no longer supported of Linux has full support for gaming thanks to Valve, I've seen enough of Win 10 shitting all over itself to know its not a good OS.
You must be a youngster then because it didn't used to be this way, specially during the 00s PC boom. I remember scoring C2Qs and AMD Phenom Triples for sub $200 on Black Friday with pretty damn good specs from memory to HDD space. Sure the OS was filled with crapware but it was easy enough to just nuke the OS and use the enclosed key to install a clean OS. You didn't get the top CPU but it would be not very far from it, for example when the Q9xxx was the top Intel chips you would get a Q8xxx so really not bad.
But what they are offering now? Frankly sub $250 used PCs on eBay have newer CPUs and better specs than their $400+ offerings, its literally old junk that was sitting in a warehouse somewhere but they are asking new PC prices for. I mean seriously an FX-6300 for $400? AMD A8s and Core i3 dual cores for $500? Their prices are frankly worse than what I've seen on just daily deals from Amazon and Dell, they sure as hell ain't worth standing in line in the cold to buy that is for damn sure!

Maybe its because I was in the biz and had access to hardware you didn't but the boss at the PC shop I worked at had me hooked up to an ex server board with dual socket 650Mhz running an insane at the time 512Mb of RAM and even back then I'd have to get off my system and jump onto a 450Mhz Celery like the masses were using at the time and go "wow...this REALLY sucks" so even back then I had got to experience just how much nicer multicores were and even on basic office work and browsing it was like night and day, you on your PC would have been like Bubsy and I was Sonic on crack, I could bounce between a dozen running programs with instant reaction time thanks to my 10k RPM drives, it was like running an octocore with SSD today.
You just didn't know it blew because you didn't get to see what as possible back then which was totally understandable, until I took a job at the shop I thought my Celery 300a OCed to 500Mhz was just banging but even back then once you went multicore? You just couldn't go back, it was just too painful. Hell the boss even gave me one of the first 1Ghz systems that came through the door, I ended up handing it back and going back to my dual 650Mhz until we got some dual socket boards that could take the 1Ghz+ chips, I just could not stand going back to single core after tasting how much nicer computing with multicore was.

This user was the only time I ever had to throw a customer out of the shop in all my years and you will see why in this case? Yeah it was warranted. I had a customer come in to buy a desktop and he said "I want you to install Limewire on it" and this was nearly 3 years after the FBI killed Limewire so I told him "Look the FBI shut that down years ago, the only "Limewire" software out there now is just a virus with the Limewire logo, but I will be happy to show you how bitttorrent works or install Emule which is still up and running" but he says not to bother and he buys a PC...the next day he comes back demanding free repair, when I ask him what happened and boot up the PC he said "I got infected in less than an hour and you said it was safe" so I boot it up and find it filled with malware...and a big limewire icon. I ask him "What happened to the antivirus?" and get told "it wouldn't let me install limewire" when I explain AGAIN that limewire does not exist and the antivius was trying to stop him from installing a fake copy of limewire he starts screaming "The icon is right there and it says limwire you make it work!" so I ended up having to threaten to call the cops and threw him out with him screaming "You are a liar that says limewire you are just trying to cheat me!"

Because in 1998 we were using 600Mhz CPUs with almost no cache, 128Mb of RAM was considered a lot, oh and did I mention that if there was ANY error 9 times out of 10 your computer would just crash and take your work with it? Yeah wasn't the web and javascipt causing that part of the bloat, having an OS fail gracefully without taking down the system instead of just shitting itself takes quite a bit of overhead. And God forbid you have more than 1 thing at a time you wanted to do as multitasking was about as pleasant as waiting in line at the DMV.
Now if you would have said 2008, when the Phenom quads and C2Q ruled the land and 4-8Gb of RAM was pretty common? Would have agreed with you 100%, because even today those early quads are quite usable for a daily driver, heck I have an HP Media Center with a Q9505s I still use at the shop for looking up parts and converting analog to digital thanks to its built in capture card and on basic tasks its as snappy as my octocore, but dude its obvious its been quite awhile since you used a single core X86 PC because let me tell you its quite painful.
Even those $10 ARM SoC maker boards use at least a dual as nobody wants to suffer with a single core even at $10 and those CPU designs are a hell of a lot more advanced than the shit we was running in 98.

Bingo we have a winnar! The difference in single thread these days between Intel and AMD is really single digits unless you are looking at the absolute top o' the line chips from both and even then you are paying nearly $700 more for a whole 12% faster single thread performance.
Nowadays with the Ryzen 3 at just $90 and the Athlon 200GE APU for just $55? Even on the low end Intel just doesn't have any real compelling choices, not when you figure in the higher cost of boards and what performance you are getting for the cost. If you want to game and don't have a GPU or your budget is super tight? The new Athlon APU can play nearly all the eSports like Rocket League and Fortnite at 1080p above 30 FPS...and that is a $55 chip my dude, and you can later pair it with something like an RX 570 or GT 1030.
Right now if someone came to me and said "I want to buy Intel, what should I get?" honestly? I'd tell them to look into the used workstation market, with so many pros dumping Xeon for Threadripper you can get some crazy good deals on Xeon 6-12 thread boxes that are cheaper than putting together a Ryzen of i5 with the same number of threads, but if all you want is a home gaming box? Ryzen 3 hands down,it has the Vega GPU, it has 4 cores with a boost of 3.7 Ghz, and if you decide you need more down the line you can just drop in a Ryzen 5 or 7 down the line with no issue.
But you were correct when all AMD had was FX, if you didn't do streaming or recording like me and just wanted a solid gaming PC? The Pentiums and i3s were good deals, its just that in 2018 the shoe is on the other foot and AMD has the better deals and the difference in games is so tiny you honestly will never notice which chip is which.
