What is it they say - "Those who don't understand unix are doomed to reinvent it, poorly."

I say this somewhat tongue in cheek.

Thanks for the statistics, it looks like I had the wrong impression. I'd like to see comparitive US statistics

There's a lot I could say here, but it would start the same old gun ownership flamewar. Just please bear in mind that gun ownership amoung law abiding citizens in the city in Australia was so rare anyway, that these statistics are almost certainly due to other factors. Any effect due to guns would be of the order of less than +/- 1 percent.

I can't believe this made it to +4 interesting. Do you have any evidence for your preposterous claim? Everything I have heard has indicated that violent crime is at an all time low in Australia.

It's only semi automatic / automatic guns that are illegal, so you're wrong (or at least misleading) on two counts.

If only I had mod points right now I could label this the flamebait/troll it deserves.

What's even worse is that the one guy who called you on this lie has been relegated to -1 troll!

Yes, and in addition, it's not a pixel by pixel scan across the scene. They use clever adaptive methods to take the minimum number of shots, which is the log of the resolution in the best case, and degenerates to a pixel by pixel scan only when the scene is horribly interreflective.

I work with these guys, it's a really cool project.

I certainly agree with the need for more coop multiplayer. Teamwork can be far more fun than winning at the expense of others. Last night she said (somewhat ironically) "Isn't it great how diablo brings us together."

A word of advice to anyone who is suffering similar problems but is too macho to go to a doctor about it. I've got the same condition as the poster above "Ultra-Ultra-Rapid Cycling Bipolar". My girlfriend (now wife) made me go to a doctor about it as a precondition to moving in with her, after I tried to kill myself. The doctor put me on some drugs (Epilim) which seem to have quite minor side effects, and treat the symptoms well without overly deadening my natural highs and lows. My story may have served as a cautionary tale similar to the one above if I had not seen a doctor about it. These things have a tendency to get permanently worse if untreated. Of course every time I try to go off the pills things slowly get bad again, but being on pills permanently is a minor price to pay for getting my life back. Of course YMMV with any medication.

I agree that word of mouth is the best marketing, but the effect word of mouth is proportional to the number of people who know about the site. It sometimes needs a kick-start.

A business does not stand on a handful of sales, but it can be enough to get a business started.

My wife makes and sells (shameless plug) silver jewelry online. The content is, in my opinion, good. Word of mouth has been great from the 3 people who know about it (in the wrong country), but that doesn't actually make for any sales when you're invisible on google. Even searches that include bits of the url fail to turn it up unless you start getting incredibly specific.

This is probably a case where SEO would really help getting good content to many people, and I'm sure there are others.
