Good catch with the AES. Yes, WinRAR can be encrypted, yes it is only (currently) open to brute force attacks, but if you are serious and have anything you REALLY NEED to hide, I recomend Truecrypt. It boggles the mind at the caramel, chewy goodness. If Truecrypt were a president, she'd be Baberham Lincon. Yup. We're talking cascade encryption (Say an AES-Twofish-Serpent combo), auto dismounting, and even (for you poor sods in countrys where you're legally compelled to release your encryption password) hidden drives (you have two passwords for the same drive; one opens up a basicly innocous file, one opens up the rest of your stuff). Perhaps it's a bit overkill, but if there was ANYTHING I cared about (trade secrets, any closed source code, EMPLOYEE RECORDS, CLIENT RECORDS, etc.), I think it's worth the small time (and no cash) investment for powerful, on the fly encryption. Oh, and it's OSS too!

"Now, you have to be signed on a label and it has to be the right label with deals worked with iTunes or Qtrax to make your music available."

Well, I suppose. But there's a great service out there called Tune Core and they "sign" pretty much anyone. I'm as lowly a musician as they get (to see my electric stuff just go Here), but I got in, submitted my mini-cd, and was in busness pretty darn quick. The pay is good (70 cents or so each song for iTunes), and the rent is cheap (a few bucks a year to be a Tune Core member), I got nothing to complain about.

Now, I'll be the first to admit that I'm pretty dumb, so forgive me if this is a REALLY stupid question.

What, exacly, does the DMCA have to do with DRM that phones home (which is gonna be the DRM Dejour here soon, I think)?

I mean, I always thought the main problem with copying say, a wmv file, was that it phoned home to check the private key (or something like that). If the DMCA wasn't here, would that make it easier to use?

Again, I'm pretty numb with stuff like this, so forgive me if this just sounds like gibberish.

Though, I agree with you in general. DMCA | DRM = bad

Well, in some cases that may be true, but have you ever heard of The Enigma Machine? It was a World War II era cipher machine used by many (though most notably by the Nazi's). It's neat stuff.

At any rate, while most of the messages from it have been broken long ago, some are only coming to light today using mass computing power.

Use a good encryption, and you'll be safe 'till the sun eats us.

For more good info on encryption, check out Steve Gibson and Leo Laport's Podcast, Security Now!, with special care taken to listen to episodes 30 through 35.

Yeah, I'm a gaming guy with a non-gamer for a fiance, myself. It's hard to get time in (of course, with a 50 hour work week, and full time college, that effects things too) to see her and our son (just turning a month old tomorow!). I guess the point is, I'm 22, I was 21 when we met, and I wish it could have been earlier. I know, I know, we "rushed in", but it's really the best thing I've ever had. I wouldn't trade them for the world. So, while other girls may be interesting to think about, I know what I want to come home to at the end of the day. I know who I want to grow old with. It's a no brainer for me. Of course, to each his own.
