To be honest I have never heard of this guy, but that's alright, I am a sophomore in college... don't really know everyone who made programs on punch cards.

Either way, the guy seems to have such a big problem with MS products but never really mentions user error. I don't care what kind of OS you use, the problem is, most of the time, between the keyboard and the chair. He is also obviously some sort of mac fanatic, if you read the third page. He is fine with Apple controlling what people can use with a mac, because no one else has a problem with it. I don't see grandma complaining about MS's monopoly. Every time he mentions Apple, its always "superb design" or something fo that sort, but when it comes to MS, its "they suck because of this or that". I personally like XP. I also like Visual Studio. Hell, I even like Office. I don't see where this person feels its less productive to use Windows. He is making some sort of generalization based on HIS experience.

"Seriously, the easiest step, though costly, is to switch to a Mac. In one step you can be free not only of Windows but also of hardware that relies on Windows yet is not supported by Microsoft. You have one source for support -- Apple -- and less finger-pointing when something goes wrong." -- If someone thinks thats a good thing... you are indeed beyond help... Having a choice of parts or support is a good thing. I can go to my local store and talk to the guy I have bought stuff from for years and he can maybe give me a refund even if my warranty is void or whatever. I did like to see that from an Apple store.

    My two cents.

Before people rant on how much Flash and pdf's suck, please step back and think.

Go back to about 5-6 years ago, when CSS and "design" weren't really associated with websites. They mainly consisted of lots of tables and a lot of annoying animated gifs with the occasional embedded music. But there were also the "good" sites that were easy to read, helpful and good on the eyes. If you don't get my point yet.. Flash and the PDF format have a bad name mainly because of their abuse. PDF is really not very bad. If you don't like the firefox plugin, DONT INSTALL IT. Let firefox download the pdf and voila, you have a nice, relatively small and fairly cross platform file. Then we have flash. I have seen Flash being used for a lot of very stupid things, like the ads... but I have also seen it used for some very cool things, like educational games, kiosk presentations and such. They are also being used for things like statistics with things like Flex. And with the new versions, its much easier to make Flash a lot more accessible, including language strings.

So before you start a large flame... please think of how GOOD these pieces of software are. I am personally very excited about the merger. Maybe they will soon have a Addobe + Macromedia Studio where they will just have Dreamweaver + Flash + Photoshop instead of two incomplete studios (CS and Macromedia Studio)

I am not a fanboy. I love the detail apple puts into their looks but Microsoft is not the devil either.

I find it quite depressing to see people, some of whom have no idea what microsoft does besides windows and IE, bashing them because it's what everyone does. People still bashing windows because 95 was very buggy.

I admit. Windows is still not as secure as say linux. It will probably never be at this rate. But it's gotten a lot better. And honestly, just read a simple tutorial and set up a firewall. Windows even comes with one now. IE is a load of horseshit. So use firefox. No one is stopping you.

Then there is the deal with bundling software. When did getting more for your money become bad?

Apple puts in a media player, a lot of games and "200 new widgets!" that might have replaced tons of commercial apps. But that's innovative and kind. Same with linux. When MS included the media player (a very decent one at that), its heresy.

I am saying people should screw apple and linux (I run linux on dual boot and use it quite often now) and worship MS. No. That would be stupid. These are tools. You USE them. You don't need to form life long alliances. I am just asking people to make judgements for themselves as apposed to jumping on the bandwagon and just bashing winbl0ws cause its l33t.

According to a couple of my profs, Microsoft has one of the best R&D labs. They do some very cool stuff. It's not bad that they are trying to have other companies do some of the work and letting them have a share in the end result. This is how science is SUPPOSED to work. Revolutionary things don't come out of a single person or a company most of the time. They come out of several groups acting together. This is what science is all about. I think this is a good move on their part.
