Netflix streaming reminds me of grocery store VHS rentals in the 1980's. Lots of B-grade and lower stuff. The only reason I keep my subscription is that my wife watches some of their original content.
Their percentage conversion of DVD to streaming is pathetic.
Multiple spot-on insights here. Also add:
o Escalating shift of work to contractors, which degrades job stability and discriminates against people with families
o Policies against both promotions and even yearly raises to keep even with inflation
Some years I marveled to read that the average job longevity in the silly valley is 18 months. I know understand why.
I think that's really part of it, like the growing shift to contractors -- as a way around the illegality of explicitly discriminating against people supporting families.
At my high school, a bus to take the Physical Olympics team an hour away to a competition was "not a worthwhile academic pursuit". Sending the FBLA to the other end of the state for a *typing contest* was. The school has a multi-thousand seat football stadium, and when knuckledraggers announce which bogus scholarship they're going to accept, choppers come in from the regional large city's TV stations. When I received 3 academic scholarships, they did not.
Why are you pretending that one can't just spend $79 for a battery replacement ?
Cheaper phones mean dicking with Android. I have better things to do with my time.
People get 30 year mortgages because they *don't* have a choice. Companies with profligate compensation cause housing to skyrocket - look at San Fransisco and Seattle. It's not like one can buy an adequate $200k house.
At some point that Prius will need a new battery too.
Reasons I stopped subscribing to CR include their ludicrous review criteria ( hard-on for rotary climate controls ffs), fixation on the New Yuck market, and advice that makes me want to just slap them. Eg, negotiate trade-in value first. Nice fantasy but unrealistic. And the advice to keep driving a car for another four years saving $ instead of buying new. Because everyone comes out of the womb with a starter car, or can magically work and live for the first four years without one.
So, just like we all do with the thunderbolt ethernet dongles, you expense one for work and one for home, and you leave them connected to the UTP. Sheesh.
Or just get a dock with analog out.
If shitty earbuds meet your needs, then USE THE ONES THAT COME WITH THE NEW PHONE.
Nobody is going to wrench your existing phone from you and epoxy the jack.
Last I checked Roku refused to play avi/ divx files. I tried Plex once. It completely ignored about half of my files.
So I got a Boxee Box, mounted my file store of video. Concept worked fine but the firmware was buggy. When d-link sold I got a NUC and put OpenELEC on it, with an NFS mount of the file store because neither SMB nor AFP worked well.
For just music it's easy -- laptop or phone.
Thank you for recognizing what Bakker showed us thirty years ago: Birds aren't descended from dinosaurs. They ARE dinosaurs.
Re the impact theory I wince every time it is portrayed as truth. There are problems with the evidence, and let's consider say a pathogen as well.
I almost always get items within the promised period, sometimes faster. Once in a while something will have to come from a distant warehouse but that rarely adds time.
What bugs me is the claim this will save $x. Just one time, not a year or something?
My first thought was that VW can't implement a decent electrical system *today*, why on earth would I trust them to expand that incompetence to the drivedrain?
Few years back I used a compressing ZFS filesystem for a central syslog server. I got ~30x compression and had 1.5 years of logs on like a 146GB filesystem.
That's why compressing filesystems rock. Because not every computer is a home desktop full of porn.

A non-OCD game player can use an OTS system just fine.
I owned a VT61 once. And even a VT05.
Swatting bums, what!
Tyson seems to spend most of his time denouncing the bill of rights.

Nor unfortunately Leonard Peltier, because justice != good press.
If it even still exists
Agreed. The GP clearly got into the brown acid.

And especially -- it isn't orbiting the fscking earth!

Or you could just move your wittle fingers and disallow the app from accessing location services.

The idea that white guys can even get a job in this space is hilarious, and that they dominate is just plain delusional.
So let's make all kinds of assumptions based on the name of a function.
