OIC. I've long suspected that MS's SOOC salaries were that high and suspect that it's a big part of why housing in King County is so ruinously expensive for those of us who aren't Of The Body.
They're less than a thousand bucks, and one fewer general-purpose computer to have to manage. They're operable by my wife and nanny. They don't result in me being fired for torrenting on my employer's network. I *just* barely avoided the latter a handful of years ago with some careful answers to HR when they called me. Maybe you're single, living in Mom's basement, and don't have a job/family/future to care about, but many of us do. Some of us also like to spend our time doing things other than dicking with elaborate solutions.
Actually, what bothers me the most about identification systems like this is the invasion of one's privacy
What about the money spent doing this in a country with massive poverty? That was my first-blush reaction, that biometric cataloging of people who don't have decent housing and food is a massive foulup of priorities, but then we've seen that there seems to be widespread contempt for the poor there.
Don't skimp on ventilation. I've been in plenty of enclosed rooms like this where I quickly develop a headache and can't concentrate, because there isn't jack for air circulation. I try to sit next to the door in conference rooms because of this, so that I can keep it slightly ajar and slip out to breathe without making a scene.
I've used OSX desktops/laptops since 2003 (when I gave up on Solaris for that role) and have largely been pleased at stuff Just Working, but the case sensitivity is a seriously *WTF were they thinking* annoyance. Sure, you can turn on case sensitivity, but various software doesn't grok it and it's not worth the aggravation.
I use my 61" TV so my toddler's grandparents can Skype and see him. Using the TV means that we can do it in the living room, letting the boy run amok, rather than trying to hold him in front of a computer for an hour. Given how lousy the average camera and Skype video are, HD is irrelevant, actually.
I'm completely missing why the OP assumes that Skype would need to be a scheduled thing. He could just open a connection and leave it up indefinitely - am I missing something? The low quality of Skype video means that the bandwidth used isn't all that high, and it seems likely that when not actively being used, and thus the scene mostly being static, the bandwidth used when idle would be even lesser, esp. if the camera's pointed at blank wall.
I worked for Stepstone at the time. NeXT poached the lead ObjC developer from us, and his wife miscarried during the move to California from Connecticut. ObjC support in GCC rather effectively killed Stepstone.
Limitations are due in part to the distance the local node is from the CO (or cableco equivalent) as well as the condition of the cable plant and equipment along the way and in your walls, not to mention whatever other customers of a shared pool are using.
There's no more deception here than any of the other places in daily life where we encounter wording like "up to" or "as low as". My credit union says VISA rates are as low as 6.9% -- no reasonable person expects that to mean that everyone who walks in the door will qualify for the lowest rate.
This happens to me in conference rooms all the time. I try hard to sit by the door and keep it open.
My first thought at the summary was Sick Building Syndrome, though, which I've experienced.
I do, but will a Nokia phone sync my contacts, calendar, and photos without massive hassle? The old Nokia I had wouldn't, neither would the Moto Razor I had. Just Working is a substantial part of why I bought an iPhone.
There have been times when circumstances are such that one doesn't have much choice but to work out of a wifi/coffee shop, say when your wife has a temp job 80 minutes' drive from home, and she doesn't have a license. Any time I've camped out in a coffee place to use wifi, I've purchased a reasonable amount of product (when edible food was available), and I've literally never seen a place without an empty table, so I don't really buy the claim that someone sitting quietly and consuming packets has anything to do with the bottom line.
I've seen a number of places that do just what fuzzyfuzzyfungus below describes -- Cafe Ladro, eg., last time I was in one. When it's done properly, it's tolerable, but I long ago gave up on Tully's, as they seemed to route everything through an underpowered proxy of some sort, making the connection basically unusable.
... until Agilent pockets the hundreds of thousands of dollars you've given them for software, and decides to not develop/support it any more. Yep, happened to us, left a rather bad taste in my mouth for the company.
You're really afraid that someone might -- gasp! -- sell on the black market a photo of you with your dog?
I'm all for privacy, but don't understand the knee-jerk hysteria wrt Facebook.
Basically, they're doing BonJour?

CPE? LMC?
The pretending that Linux[es] aren't Unix was my first clue that little meaningful was to be found here.
Are your providers wholly independent of the government and not subsidized?

I have *no* idea what you're saying here. You're one sassy frood who really knows where his towel's at.
Truly. I had a *lot* of fun playing Snipes back in teh_day

Since it's a Gordon Bell prize, shouldn't it have to run on PDP-11's?

This has never happened to me.

Um, maybe because ZFS is not restricted to x86/x64? What gave anyone the idea that it is?

Well, there's "expected", and then there's "advertised". CYA. Sewell-style "Underpromise, Overdeliver".

Kevin Cronin left REO Speedwagon to become a financial parasite?

... but in true Knuth fashion, only one typeface will be available.
