  1. Which Dr. Who? Which Who? on Top 50 Science Fiction TV Shows · · Score: 1

First the person that wrote this list needs to step away from the bong or stop having 6 martini lunchs. For one there is way too many, what I would call "fantasy" or "comic book" titles among the 50. Secondly to miss out on DS9 or Red Dwarf or well the titles have been covered.

But here's an interesting twist. I couldn't help but notice that Battlestar Galactica took 2 spots (#35 & 2), the Bionic Man and Woman each got a place (#36 & 29), Star Trek comes in with 3 shows in the top 50 (#14, #3 & #1..no DS9?????)

And then we see number 8, Dr Who. Which they say it ran from 1963 to 1989. The list totally dissed the new Dr Who (Christopher Eccleston).

But, here's the twist, if Star Trek and the other shows can take multiple spots in the list, (same name, different cast) then Dr. Who should also take multiple spots. Who wouldn't agree that Dr Who (Tom Baker)deserves a top 10 spot on the list. But would you honestly put Dr Who (Peter Davison) in the top 10? Probably not. But I have to remember that this writer included Xena in the top 15. Oh bother!

Boston.com wouldn't know Sci Fi if it beamed into thier tighty whities and gave them a wedgie.

For inexpensive, climate controlled, fireproofed, offsite storage. Rent a safety deposit box at a local bank. I pay $25 a year for a box that's big enough for quite a few tapes, DVD/CD's and a couple of hard drives.

  4. Old _Working_ Computer Parts Make Great Firewall on Making Stuff Out Of Broken Computer Equipment? · · Score: 1

Can't believe no-one has pointed out that you can use some of the working parts from old machines and a piece together a nice firewall. I've set up a dozen or so Smoothwall firewalls http://www.smoothwall.org/ with 486 parts. My personal Smoothie is a P1 with 160 Megs of RAM. While it runs like a dream, the old setup, a 486-100 with 64 Megs RAM did the same thing. The only difference was the web interface speed.

With everything that the smoothie box does, for the price of a couple of NICS and cables, I'm more than happy with the performance and security that Smoothwall brings to my cable connection. So don't be so quick to make yourself a key chain or clock, when you could be adding some security to your network and have Linux running 24/7.

  5. Re:Flagship Show Already Ruined on Comcast Fires TechTV Staff · · Score: 2, Interesting

As far as I'm concerned, the flagship show on TechTV was The Screen Savers. When the show had Leo, Martin, and Morgan still, it was the best show on television.

I and many others would disagree. TSS was the absolute best when it was ZDTV and the hosts were Leo and Kate. They worked together wonderfully and Kate is one smart Tech Chick!

After she left ZDTV (after a breif stint on that gamers show) and then Leo gave up CFH (notice CFH is gone in the new schedule) BTW, Leo was replaced by a total dweeb. All he needed was a pocket protecter and tape on the glasses.

Well, after Kate left, so did my viewing ZDTV viewing habit. I still tune in occasionally, but it just ain't Leo and Kate. They were special! Thanx for all the good times guys!

Kate is now in NYC katebotello.net

Or we could have a gadget, maybe a black box, market it as a "Must Have" if you send alot of bulk mail (aka Spammers) and the new AIM interface will include a button that will shoot a paintball at all Spammers currently online.

    This could work!

  8. What's in a name? on RIAA Apologizes for Incorrect Infringement Notice · · Score: 2, Interesting

    Fact - My first name is Rock (R - o - c - k)(Yes that's what my parents choose)
Fact - I'm in the Radio business
Fact - I have lots of Mp3's named rockxx.mp3 on my computers (where xx is a number)

I can't imagine the drool that would be produced by the RIAA if they were to ever come across my hard drive. I'm sure they would think "Pay-Dirt!!" When in actuality it's just another voice in the crowded radio dial.

I'll have to warn my good buddy John L. Zeppelin to be on the lookout for the RIAA piranha. (His real name too!)

  9. Lawn Mower DUI Offender Looking For New Transporta on Build Your Own Bar Stool Racer · · Score: 1

Lawn Mower DUI Offender Looking For New Transportation

From a Recent Local Newspaper Story
"Johnston City, Illinois: Police officers wrote a DUI to a habitual offender because he was using his Lawn Tractor to go bar hopping." ....... "They were able to track his whereabouts by following the wide swath of freshly cut grass in the neighborhood."

If this "Johnston City" man ever finds out about Bar Stool Racing, how will the cops be able to find him?

  10. Mom and Pop are not to blame on RIAA Now Targeting Retailers · · Score: 1

It's no secret that RIAA wants to control (and profit from) every musical note we hear, this just shows that they are too lazy to do all the work.

If the small stores are in fact distributing illegal copies of music, I don't think they know they are doing so. I know ignorance is no excuse for lawless practices, yet think about how these small stores "stock their shelves." Mom and Pop stores most likely purchase the alleged illegal material from a traveling salesman, who most likely even sets up the cardboard display and marks the product for retail sale. Mom and Pop are not in the back room churning out illegal copies of copyrighted material with their new CD Burner (now that would equal about 25 wouldn't it?) they are trying to make a meager profit via meager markup.

I can see the demise of many family owned operations because of this Mega Corporation tactic. Receiving a letter from a lawyer demanding settlement could and will do damage to small business (the backbone of the American Economy). Many will comply and/or desist selling music, while the real culprite finds new ways to sell his illegal warez.

The way I see it, the RIAA is too lazy to do the research and legwork needed to find out who is doing the manufacturing and distributing of the illegal material. Raining econimic plunder is the only thing they are good at, so they continue to excercise their power on the weak.

Could the next step be lawsuits against major music outlets? After all, if they had not provided the orignal, it would not have been pirated.

Just when I think they've showed what big imbacials they are, they do it one better. I only hope that the decline of sales continues and heart medication magically disappears from the RIAA board room. Maybe we can get some young minds in there to bring this unfortunate affair under control.

  11. Alan Parsons Project, I Robot on Will Smith as I, Robot · · Score: 1

A movie based on one of my favorite books would be great.

A Wil Smith remake of the Platinum Album by Alan Parsons Project "I Robot" would be much less then great. As in bad, well, scarey.

Imagine Wil Smith bustin' out "I wouldn't want to be like you!"

    Yikes!

Actually Alan Parons would be a good choice for a Asimov soundtrack. He was the Engineer for Pink Floyd's classic "Dark Side of The Moon." The Alan Parsons Project is most familier with wide screen, cinematic music. IMHO the 1977 "I Robot" is Alan Parsons best effort.

    Alan Parsons Project
I Robot... The story of the rise of the machine and the decline of man, which paradoxically coincided with his discovery of the wheel... and a warning that his brief dominance of this planet will probably end, because man tried to create robot in his own image.

  12. Test Failed on WWII Allies Tested Tidal Wave Bomb · · Score: 1

I recall a program on either Discovery Channel or History Channel, perhaps PBS. The piece had a few minutes allocated to the use of explosive devices to create massive waves of water to distort the enemy ships view of impending danger. The danger could come in the form of attacking aircraft, missile, or even an old fashioned pirate style raiding party. The peice mentioned that at one time there were plans to take out whole ships with a similar device, but testing did not yield the desired results. I beleive the program was related to a theme of "smart explosives," the kind that takes down buildings in one big pile.
The demonstration explosion that was shown on the program was very cool. Boom, big wave, wet deck, ship moving back and forth.

Will try to find the link and post later.
