So many people in here are expressing attitudes of the racist right-wing groups in Europe who want the "dirty Arabs" to go home. Puh-lease! The United States is a nation of immigrants, founded on immigration, comprised of PEOPLE FROM OTHER PLACES (of course with the exception of native americans). Why does nobody here seem to remember this? ---
I'm reading it for the second time. It was so good, I started over. Picking up stuff I didn't pick up the first time. Doing the "I love this part" to myself. Anyway, it is definitely NOT science fiction. How could it be? It is, however, one of the best novels I've ever read. Highly recommended. ---
Ah, the whole "testing to see who's right / who's wrong" scenario won't work. I'm sure my opponent would not agree to having his integrity questioned like that. (Plus it would cause unnecessary housemate friction!). He has these super high-quality audio-geek studio speaker monitors, so I'm sure he can tell a good difference in your run-of-the-mill MP3s.
Nevertheless, your super-long post was informative and much appreciated, Sodium Attack! I now have a better understanding of the bitrate-to-ear factor. I'm sure both my opponent and I are both right in a way. (me: sounds great! him: loses sound quality, and rubs me the wrong way, no thanks!). ---
Yes, of course there is a decrease in sound quality, but is it really 1/10 the sound quality? Obviously not. MP3s sound GREAT in my opinion, my housemate is a all-frequencies nazi. What is lost exactly??? ---
My housemate is of the opinion that since an MP3 is 1/10th the size of its original aiff or wav or whatever, that IT IS 1/10th THE SOUND QUALITY. I disagree. I believe mp3 is to aiff (in audio) what jpg is to psd (in graphics), i.e., you cannot edit the waveform of an mp3, and that's why an aiff's file size is so much larger -- it is editable. My opponent believes that MP3's sound like crap, so he prefers to stay in the audio CD world by burning AIFFs to CDRs. What think ye? ---
I guess you've never used Virtual PC for Mac? It is very cool Nice for those nights I need to bring home PC-only projects (I only have Mac and Linux running at home). --- "I got three words for you: Learn to fucking type"
PETA is a leftist-extremist Animal rights activist group, and they exist so that idiots like you will open your fucking eyes to the real problems in the world. Their stance is that eating meat and wearing fur is a barbaric remnant of our past, and we humans have evolved past that into a more civilized way of living; that we can indeed survive on a plant-based diet, indeed that world-starvation would be stamped out if the meat industry would stop consuming all of the world's water, grain reserves, and polluting its ground water, etc, etc... I don't think you're very aware of the tortuous and inhumane conditions animals are put through, and if you were, you'd become a vegetarian like me. So you're saying "oh wow, this hippie is way too serious," and well, yes, I guess I am pretty serious. About as serious as I get when I hear a racist joke. I find ignorant attitudes toward this issue to be on par with ignorant attitudes toward say, sexist or homophobia or racism, etc, etc. And no, I'm not a hippie. Anyway, I find there to be WAY too many macho/inhumane/cruel geeks all over this site, it gives me a rather bleak view of the world I live in, and of our future. --- "I got three words for you: Learn to fucking type"
I always thought.org was reserved for legitimate organizations! Or if it wasn't, it should be. Why would a parody group even be able to get ahold of this domain? The Internet is all about obtaining information. If someone wants to find out whether Gillette or Schick is testing on lab rats, they shouldn't have to muddle through parody sites to get their information. --- "I got three words for you: Learn to fucking type"
Not only does iMac support removable media, but portable/removable media drives. Is this not superior to all other desktops in terms of portability? The iMac even has a handle on the back of it!
When will people realize that floppies are obsolete?
I agree with King Babar. I suppose it would make more sense for Apple's slogan to say: Think 'Different' (Like, think 'pink', or think 'panache' or whatever) Instead of: Think Different In other words, Apple is not telling you HOW to think, its telling you to think of the concept "different" as opposed to the McDonald's/McBarney/McWindows/McAOL conformity world we live in. Or, should I say, "confomity world in which we live?"
Which brings me to another point: There's no need to get into an argument over semantics (esp. when it comes to marketing slogans!), when the english language is constantly changing anyway. Like, do you say pail or bucket? which is correct? both. And do you say his, her or their in the following: "one does not talk with [x] mouth full"...? I say 'their', because its neutral. I'm sure plenty of people use adjectives to modify verbs, and maybe they're more right than you think?
You guys are missing overarching point of this debate. Communication technology is outpacing the corporate music industry. Bands don't make their money from CD sales, record companies do. Cds and videos are promotional tools to get people to go to CONCERTS, which is where the band makes their living. MP3 would just be another promotional tool for the band's music. MP3-file transfer and home-studio technology is cutting out the middleman (the record companies and distribution companies), because production and distribution can be achieved from someone's bedroom. The industry is receiving a massive overhaul, and Metallica and likes are fighting that change kicking and screaming.
I am a Mac-, PentiumNT-, PentiumLinux-head. No platform wars here. Mac is good for some things. Linux is good for some things. NT is good for some things (even though its made by Micro$oft).
Best contemporary novelist: Neal Stephenson, hands down. One of his novels is teeming with nanotechnology. The Diamond Age (Link to Amazon). Read it. It is magically delicious.
Whoa there! You may want to hold back a little, if you want Slashdot to retain a reputation of professionalism. The sexism/homophobia has got to go. Please keep your bigoted opinions to yourself, thank you. Can someone put a leash on this guy?
Those companies need to stop whining and learn a little javascript to force the frameset so they can have their wittle-bitty logo and adverts. Would've been interesting to see the court case, all those lawyers and judges pretending to talk tech with expressions like "deep hyperlinking". heh.
Actually, you're wrong on that second point. The bloke who made the calendar for Pope Gregory actually left out the year 0, so Christ was technically born on 1/1/1. I am still in agreement with you on when to celebrate, however, my argument is simply that the first decade was nine years long...
iMac is definitely a first-time buyer's machine. The whole point of it is that it's cheaper and easier! You get what you pay for. No upgrading. If you think you'll want to upgrade, save a little, wait, and buy a G3 (or a new G4, Yay!).
Whoa, there! Living languages are FAR from perfect, they are ever-changing and dynamic (read adjective again above). The French language has WAY fewer exceptions to rules than English, so don't be slammin' them, yo!

How about GREATEST LIVING AUTHOR? In my humble opinion. Have you read all his books?

No, better still, they'll strike a deal with Oreo.
