Imagine my surprise when I got the new cell phone it was in July that I got emergency text notifications of weather events. It was bizarre - heard this loud BONG BONG BONG on the car bluetooth and then saw the message on the phone.
I walked away from dead tree books years ago. Don't get me wrong - I still own quite a few from the period prior or from authors who in their stupidity don't make e-book versions of their books available for sale.
I like the fact that I can have several hundred linear feet worth of books in the palm of my hand.
You think so? I do too. My new music discovery has been purely net based for several years now. And it isn't me streaming my local ad laden FM station on the web.
I take the MBTA Commuter from Providence to Boston daily. It runs along the same segment on which the Acela runs. It's a pretty smooth ride, that is if the MBTA train doesn't break down.
Best one I ever saw though was one morning the commuter was running VERY slowly. You could see debris streamed down one side fo the track. Then as we got further in we saw what hit what. An Acela regional hit an SUV full of kids, killed all of the kids and the SUV was just a twisted lump of metal. In the case of car versus train, train wins hands down.
Now that's really interesting given how Ma Bell once charged you for the privilege of using DTMF aka Touch Tone. That was until you figured out that it was enabled by default on the lines and then started using it without telling Ma Bell. But she got smart - the electronic switches could TELL you who was using what. That's when the game was up.
If you understood the interplay between the flat out UGO rights and group membership maybe, just maybe you wouldn't take the opportunity you did to bash Unix/Linux file permissions.
Or just to shut them down. I mean I'm fairly certain we in the U.S. have our own cyberwarfare units in the U.S. - that might also be the answer to who leaked the ISO of Red Star 3.0
Then it's good enough to regulate the ISP's. Look at what at&t was before the government broke it up in the 1980's. It was a regulated monopoly. But today we have some competition in the telecom - regulation could only enhance it by removing ownership of the poles.
Since Sony has lost the audio player market to cheap cell phones. I should know, I buy nothing but sub $100 cell phones and the capabilities just keep going up and up. The only inviting thing about the Sony unit is the 128GB of internal storage - but cell phones go up to what, 10GB of internal now and can take 64GB SD cards for far less than $1,200.
Old TV's were parts harvesting extravaganzas for me. Played with a lot of high voltage stuff when I was a kid - knew how to protect myself but it gave my mom fits.
Churning butter is easy. Just requires effort and heavy cream. Into a container and shake it for about fifteen minutes. What you get out the other end is butter and buttermilk.
And I know how to fix things. When my LCD TV just gave a blinking red power light I knew for example the power supply had shit the bed. So I took it out, found the offending capacitors (Yeah, plural! ) and determined the time to de-solder, order, replace and re-install made it cheaper to just buy a whole new power supply for $50, install and TV has been running well ever since.
It's been at least 10F above normal all year. It's supposed to be 55F tomorrow. And we've seen only trace amounts of snow so far but lots of rain. In a way as a commuter I'm kind of enjoying it - I walk to the train station, there's no ice or snow to contend with and a little rain is easily dealt with. So if that's climate change I'm all in. Plus the old gas bill for home heating has been very reasonable. Love it because I know it's making National Grid suffer - and of course my ultimate goal is to break them into a million little pieces.
I call a cell phone an electronic leash. But I've refused to get email on the phone. Sorry - if it's burning down you can text me or in really extreme cases call me. And I make that clear wherever I've worked.
There's a little island off Rhode Island called Prudence Island. My great grandfather had owned a summer home there and I have memories of going there via ferry when I was younger.
Now of course the island if overrun with deer. And the suckers aka deer can swim so now as you go further south in Rhode Island there are deer warnings everywhere.
The state does occasionally allow hunters to cull the herd, except there aren't enough hunters to really have an impact.
And today on the MBTA commuter from Providence to Boston I spotted a dead deer by the side of the track. Apparently in deer versus train, train wins. But deer versus car - deer wins most of the time.
Now driving in RI through those areas I have never seen a deer. Probably because I know the deer are most active at dawn and dusk so I'm usually not on the road at those hours. But once on U.S. 17 in North Carolina at a point between Elizabeth City and Edenton I spotted a big old buck right in the middle of the roadway at about 8PM. Flashed the beams at him, hit the horn, that sucker wouldn't move. Then I started to slowly move the car toward the buck. That's when he moved.
Are a fairly common problem in all the Chinese made stuff. And Apple exacerbates it be eschewing fans in their computer. So no surprise you have to reflow the board every now and then.
That we haven't done in the U.S. what seems common in Europe - destruction of speed and red light cameras. There are sites on the web showing the carnage.
That said - the cameras do offer prime hacking targets too.
Yeah - Spirit and Opportunity went far beyond their 90 Sol limit. And the issues they faced were determining factors in Curiosity being nuclear powered.
GE is big is into a diversified portfolio. They have finance, broadcast, production, locomotive, jet engines, etc. But they no longer make consumer electronics and appliances - they've simply sold their name off to Asian manufacturers.

I have a well configured Pandora One account. I like the model - tell it artists you do like, and it suggests based on that.

If you're really good you watch the httpd.log files and see where it didn't have rights to get to the directory. Then set the rights accordingly.

Completely unbundle your cable subscription. Tell them to shove their box up their ass.

In my case I'd have figured out what the board actually did and crafted my own, better solution.

Can also do electrical and plumbing stuff too.

I had participated in planning a new office. All the cubes were what I termed "Fuck you" cubes - low partitions - fully open.
But because I was part of I.T. I made absolutely sure that A) I.T. got it's own space completely and B) The cubes were full six feet high.
