If they know enough about computers to install Linux, they already know where to get it themselves.

I almost want to have extra Linux CD's lying around so I can give them to people. I had someone this summer ask me for some CD's and I was going to give him a Mandrake set because I had a newer version, but they were at home. Sometimes people don't want to pay for a box set and don't have the bandwidth to download to ISO or a CD burner to burn the ISO.

There's not too much publishing cost you'd need to regain, so you won't have to sell the book and anger Slashdot readers.

  7. Funny Turbo Linux story on TurboLinux Files for IPO · · Score: 3

Turbo Linux likes to distribute a CD with Linksys network cards. So when I was working the Resnet fair at my college, the bookstore sold Linksys, so we got a few Turbo Linux CD's that people didn't want.

However, this one girl comes down and says, "I can't get my card to work." She had tried setting it up herself. We thought it would be something like enabling DHCP or something simple. She brings her computer down and boots up. LILO appears on the screen. We laughed so hard. I think she got confused during the install when it started asking about partition tables.

Best of luck in their IPO!

But what about a addon cartridge that acts as a universal remote? A cartridge to download small texts (shopping lists, DeCSS, etc.) to read later? I'd like to see a small device that does certain things for me that I don't need an full-fledge computer for ("You have e-mail", "Network is down", "Packages delivered") that would sit on the side and act as a mini console.
